CarnEvil is the GOAT. My friend Brian and I basically had an unspoken pact that if we ever saw it in an arcade, theater, pizza place, WHEREVER...we had to play it. At least 2 credits apiece, but usually waaaaay more than that.

Heh, ahh man,..that's a really cool memory ya got. :-) My friend Gary (yanno, one'a the childhood neighborhood friends) and I had this on-going,...'thing',...where whenever the local rental shop got in a new Final Fantasy (parts 2 & 3 on SNES) or Mega Man game (the X's), we would go and get it, keep it until we finished it, and then we would split the eventual cost. Which,...I mean, yah....it got a little costly, but not that bad. Remember, at that time, new release games (at least at my shop) were $2.50/day. Older games, the non-new release games, $1.00/day. Mehhh,....FF's, we could finish after like,....3, 4 days if we wanted to take our time and explore, n' stuff.... Mega Man games?!.... *pssshhhyyyt!!*....Try more like five or sometimes six days! Ha! Ahhh yah, man.....good times, man,......good times. :-D

I think all these games really show that, you don't need the most realistic graphics, the greatest art-direction, or the fanciest technology to make something unique and attention-grabbing. Many of these look, for better or worse, like no others, but that just makes them more memorable than they'd normally be

  • @steveharvey2102

It's definately not dumb or silly. It's nostalgia!
It's good times with old friends, or family, and in this case, it's a touching story.
A story that most of us can relate to, in one way or another.
Back in 98, my Sister and Girlfriend would hang out at a 2$ movie theater.
In the lobby they had the Die Hard shooter, where you had to rescue the President's daughter!
The game had a bunch of action and was just balls out crazy. Whenever you Walked by it, the demo would be playing and the game would continuously yell at you, saying "SAVE THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER!"
It was so stupid but we spent a pocket full of quarters on it ;)
    Good times!
    Cheers from Canada

Had one a few blocks from our houses on college campus that my friends and I would go stomp on as teens. Operation Wolf was awesome at the time. But my story is of the shooter R-Type. I lived in a small town with one arcade in the little pub/nightclub in North England, and the landlord used to let us youngsters in to play pool and the arcade as long as we bought fizzy drinks, so I became really good at R-Type and could finish it on 1 credit. Anyway I came from a poor family and me and my younger brother went out on a trip to Newcastle, a huge city to us, to The Metro Centre (it's still in business) and it had a huge arcade with lots of people and there was a R-Type cabinet, so I went over put 20p in and started playing and I breezed through the early stages and after finishing stage 6 which is really quite tricky my brother said look behind and there was about 15 people watching and I remember the buzz of having a crowd who probably this was their local arcade and maybe they had not seen level 7 then 8. This memory from that day trip I'll always remember, the buzz of playing in front of a audience was a thrill. Arcades were so special back then and I still love shooters or shmups now, and can't wait to play R-Type Final 2 in a couple of months.

T2 was probably my all time favorite arcade game. I remember once going to Funspot in Laconia, New Hampshire one summer vacation in I think '93 and had the best arcade play through of my entire life. In the zone would be an understatement. I got to the T-1000 with the liquid nitrogen on my original 50 cents. Didn't die or continue once. I had saved up an army load of weapons and missiles, but you ain't kidding about his health meter regenerating. I must have blasted away for 10 minutes straight until I ran out of ammo and then eventually died. It's impossible on one player. I managed to get to that part a few times after, never beat him, but never again without having to pump more quarters into the machine. But that one day, I was a T2 arcade god!

I loved arcades back in the day, but I didn't play that many Rail Shooters, and I don't actually have any specific memories that stand out to me. I did get to play the X-Men 6-player cabinet with a full host (and I wasn't even stuck with Dazzler!), but I had more fun playing Secret of Mana with my significant other. Finding out that Pac-Mania was real and not some weird fever dream from the '80s was neat, I guess. Great video, though, and thanks for sharing your memories of Kevin. It's funny what kinds of things we remember about those who've gone before us; I lost a close friend, Tim, many years ago, and the thing that I kept remembering over and over again was that I'd burned dinner (fried potatoes) because I was distracted playing Rondo of Blood on my PSP. It was a stupid thing to do, of course, but his smartass remark would always pop into my head every time I made them after that.

That's what I love about arcades - they have game experiences that you can't get at home with most home consoles like shooting big guns, riding plastic motorcycles, sitting inside flight simulators, hitting punching bags with your own fists, etc.
I love shooters in the arcades. So much more fun than they are with a keyboard or controller.
The Jurassic Park game was really fun. It's very imaginative and thankfully short so that you can actually see much of the gameplay without having to spend your entire allowance/chore money on it.
Yeah, digitized video really didn't age well. It's almost as painful to look at now as N64 animation is. :)
I never saw Crossbow. I'd love to find it.
Time Crisis is probably the most familiar one in this video. It was a fun game that I also enjoyed on the PlayStation systems.
Beast Busters looks like a ton of fun. I hope I see one in an arcade that's been restored.

I also think your skill for making humorous/snarky/ satirical pop culture references is underappreciated!
Maybe in the future: movies that became arcade/video/ computer games ( TV shows, books, ads etc) would be fun. Maybe games inspired by Nancy Reagan ( like NARC) lol. You really have your finger on the pulse of pop culture from that time!

First time I think I heard of or seen ICP is when I was watching Woodstock 99 on pirated Pay-Per-View(not proud) and then MTV aired a comprehensive special on beefs in the industry and they had a little beef with Eminem. Anywho:
Definitely played House of the Dead and Time Crisis on PS1 the most. I played Area 51: Site 4(which I'm sure was better than the original) on a pool/billiards hall in my neighborhood. Seen Lethal Enforcers in my local laundromat but never played it. Looked cheesy then and even more now lol. Also played a horror game that one side had the pistol and the other was a pump shotty. Clearly wasn't memorable since I can't remember the name. I wasnted to play Marvel Vs. Capcom anyways lol.

The sit-down Jurassic Park machine is my arcade equivalent to owning my dream car.
The Starsky & Hutch game from the 2000s is in a way like an updated Lucky & Wild, allowing one player to drive and the other to use a lightgun.
There is also a port of Crossbow late in the 2600's lifespan of all places.

The reason why there is a pacing change between Jurassic Park and Lost World comes down to the controller. Jurassic park was a joystick shooter. Lost World and Jurassic Park/// were light gun shooters.
I actually prefer the gun versions. They had good graphics and cool stories

My best arcade light gun game memory was probably Line of Fire: a 2-player vehicule unit (similar to the Jurassic Park games) with giant guns!!
    Awesome!!

Great video and memory that you had with your friend playing CarnEvil! I have a good memory beating the 2nd Jurassic park game with a friend while at Myrtle Beach. Time crisis would be my favorite series but also love Terminator 2, Operation Wolf, House of the Dead 2, Silent scope and CarnEvil! I did play Lucky and Wild 20 some years ago at the Best Western lodge in Jackson Hole Wyoming !

My favorite was Police Trainer. My dad would take me to a local arcade in the 90's and give me a ton of quarters that I'd mostly waste on it, but I also almost mastered it. Couldn't quite get through the Commissioner levels but came close!

Actually have a separate room made up with a Saturn, Playstation and Dreamcast hooked up to a nice Sony CRT just for light gun games. My 10 year old niece and 15 year old cousin love playing Virtua Cop(at one point I was so good at Cop I could finish the game without continues),Time Crisis,House Of The Dead and Elemental Gearbolt. These games just aren't any fun without a gun. So I wanted to make sure they could see what it was like to play these games the way they were supposed to be played. By the way,one of the best Light Gun games was Jurassic Park The Lost World, the model 3 arcade game. Sadly it was never ported to anything.

This video was like watching my childhood all over again. From Operation Wolf, Lethal Enforcers, Time Crisis, and T2. Kinda sad that you didn't have Turkey Hunter on this list, that to me was such a fun game, my brother and I would always place a gentleman's wager who would perform better in that shooter. As for your story, it's not silly at all and I know how it feels. My younger brother and I always played video games together and we made sure never to buy a single player game. Our father was an abusive person and our way to have a slice of peace was to escape into a game. While other kids got to go on trips, got new stuff, or even current gen consoles, my brother and I were using last gen tech. One time my dad broke my hand while I was handcuffed, but I did score our first color 13 inch tv and clay fighters as a hush "don't tell your mother" bribe. My younger brother is gone but I still foolishly out of reflex buy 2 player 16bit games on Steam that he and I would of played the piss out of together.

Older games aren't just rated on graphics/music/story; there's the initial wow factor, nostalgia which is even more common. Its cool to see how the industry explored/evolved from simple vectors (battle zone) to digital images, to full blown polys. I'm sure I can find full walkthroughs on YT but I'm gonna start with Jurassic and Virtua Cop. Cool recap bro.

I remember playing most of these. I remember playing Revolution X for the first time shortly before the tabletop RPG group I was part of started a Cyberpunk campaign and begging the GM to let me replace my planned Techie character with a Rockerboy just because of how much I enjoyed the game.
I also like the Terminator Salvation arcade game which I consider a spiritual successor to the T2 arcade game and hope I get to play it again someday (The only local machine I know of is in my favorite movie theatre and I haven't gone there since before COVID hit. A new arcade opened near my house just before COVID became a big deal but I haven't visited it so I have no idea what light gun games it has)

Damn.... Hahahaha! Ah dude, seriously, thank you so freakin' much for the teenage me memory throw-back. :-D Geez,....I 'member playin' most of these back in the arcade. I grew up in Riverside, CA. So, one of my typical things was, during the summer school break, I'd ask my mom if she could drop me off at Castle Park for a couple hours. A few of the shooter games you listed, I played and did....meh,...okay, not terrible, but man...I tell ya, heh!, some of 'em would just be like, "Hey kid, thanks for the quarter,..by the way,....NOPE! I dun wanna play, GAME OVER!" heh, but even the ones I sucked at, were, but of course!, still so very fun. :-D

Dude I LOVED lucky and wild!!! When I was a kid my stepbrother and I would play it all the time at the arcade. Being poor we would usually opt for the one player mode he would shoot and I would drive. It was a blast. AREA 51 was also pretty cool, when it came out it the graphics looked so revolutionary. I was pretty crap at it tho and would run through my quarters in the first level.

There was a Lucky & Wild machine at my local Dave and Busters. I spent about $15 just to play all the way through it. I was the solo player, so the experience of driving while blasting was awesome. Also another good shooter was Ghost Squad. You can make choices that actually effect the story line and outcome. There's a good port of it for the Wii (the Wii is a great system for rail shooters)

Great video. My fav shooter as far as shooting skills testing was police trainer. Granted it was only good if the gun was calibrated properly.
I liked the nwo slip up. Man, revolution x called it. Great work! Wish I could find an arcade.
