- A Phone rang in Adyar, Chennai in 1977. It was meant for Rukmini Devi Arundale, a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer, a theosophist, an activist for animal welfare and the first woman in Indian history to be nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India.
On the other line of the phone was the then Prime Minister of India 'Morarji Desai'. He asked her if she would consent to be the President. "President of what", she asked. “President of India,” said the prime minister.
She politely declined the offer.
In this video, we take a look at the life of a legend who chose her dance over the Presidency.

Amazing video, well scripted. It’s good to know about women in society that changed the stereotype.
A request - please at least try to pronounce Tamizh and Sanskrit names properly. Dont " urdu-cize" everything
