    Kathak is the traditional dance form of Uttar Pradesh. It derived it's name from kathika means story tellers who recited verses from epics with gestures and music. It consists of 4 gharanas Lucknow, Jaipur, Raigarh and Banaras. Proud of such rich tradition and heritage.

But once a year we had a festival where all Indians of our community would have the kids do dances all night long. We were all different Indians n religions and our dances were divided by age groups. The aunty who always taught us dances gave us different dances each year. I got to learn bharatanatayam, belly dancing, and several others. It was amazing. Ill definitely send my kids to dance classes

      To answer your statement kathak and bharatanatyam have similar roots. Kathak started out as a storytelling dance and was used to tell the great Hindu epics such as the Ramayana; but was also used to tell stories of Hindu deities such as radha and Krishna. With the arrival of the mughal empire, kathak gradually changed from a dance of storytelling to a dance of complex footwork, spins and graceful hand and arm movements. Kathak originated in northern India whereas bharatanatyam came from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam is still a dance of storytelling. Bharatnatyam performances tend to be long with the male or female dancer playing all the characters. So male bharatanatyam dancers will make gestures that represent the female characters in the story. The slightest change in body position or hand gestures can indicate a change of character. With bharatanatyam there are also eye movements and facial expressions that help tell the story and convey the emotions of the dancer.

    • @luisa7270
      @luisa7270 3 года назад +6

      @@cuteladybug8622 Your explanation is great, but you make it seem like kathak has no storytelling or expressive dance, when this is actually not true. A good part of kathak is focused on expressiveness or telling a story, like gat bhav, thumri, kavit, bhajan, etc.

    • @madhukaransingkar1195

      Kathak and bharatnattyam are not at all similar.
      Kathak has tribhanga folds in all parts except legs while bharatnattyam has dubanggh...
      Also in kathak the gungrus need to be ties while in bharatnattyam gungrus are attached to pads (leg pads)

Presenting shows such as this one, has my sincere gratitude, perhaps a little modesty, why not eliminate the "TEDx" which is so important in the background. As an NRI I can sadly state that I know more, far more, about our classical Music, both Hindustani and Carnatik, Rhythmic patterns, Dance, Philosophy, Spirituality, and History than any of my very well educated, and indeed affluent family members in India.
    Their statement is , 'Who has time for these types of things?'
    My statement is 'I've never encountered a single educated European make that kind of statement about their culture'. I coined it as a 'Academically literate and culturally illiterate society'.
    Over the years and as a teenager I've attended all the great concerts put on here in london at the Southbank. When I, a Punjabi, named artists, ragas, talas, Kritis, composers, instruments, gharanas, I'd draw blank dismissive apathetic responses. Their prime motive was always either careers, money or western culture. And that was a result of, I gathered, their Nehruvian, Cha Cha Nehru clown deindianising education.
    Bombay musical drama ie so called movies and music were banned by my father for good reason.
    My collection of instruments homes a Rudra Veena, two pakhawajs, two tanpuras, and a santoor.

    kathak actually was started by lord krishna when he danced on kalia nag in jamuna nadi....other than that great job on expressions, killer foot work, and perfect chakras and the singer also did an awesome job

      Kathak is started by kathaka community of northern part of India. This act of storytelling established as an art form, which popularized as kathak. It is believed that his art form is inspired from raas nrithya of Lord krishna. Thus it is also known as natvari nrithya and the Lord krishna is considered as the deity of kathak.
