This is beautiful Bharathanrithyam , only Dr Padmadubramaniam madam and her deciples do this nrithya. Madam explains this dance is continuation of hand ,leg ,and karanas,fullbody movements. We do bharathnatyam is just pictures as we seen in stone sculptures in old temples. Really beautiful. Nice to watch movements. Salute you madam. Bharathnrithya and Bharathnatyam slight difference.

This also seems to be a more old style form, with rounder movements and more hip action than you see in what is now considered "classic" Bharatanatyam.
Dr. Padma here looks like she traveled from Chola era. She is excellent.

we had seen these murals in temples ....as ordinary were not able correlate these .....thanks to you .....we are able to enjoy them....
I've been watching many Odissi videos lately and have come to the realization that some of the moves in the dance are really similar to some moves in Bharatanrityam. Then I remembered reading/hearing a while back the phrase 'the dance of statues' used to describe Odissi. It seems that Odissi retained more 'Lasya' throughout the centuries while Bharatanatyam retained more 'Tandava'. How interesting.
Original Bharata Natyam now all most gone, is from Thanjavur (Tanjore) from the Thanjavur Quartet Paramparai. For your information, this women is trying to invent the wheel again. But like many things, there is a misinterpretation of historical fact regarding Bharata Natyam written by many orientalist and scholars like the woman and that goes also for the terms Lasya which is the gentle form of dance and Tandava the vigorous form, both are elements of authentic Bharata Natyam and the terms don't have anything to do with gender!

@@trevorhoover1456 Dr. Vyjayanthimala Bali carries on the tradition of the Thanjavur Quartet tradition! She has directly learned from the gurus there. There are many who learned directly from them. Nothing to do with the puritanical and sanitized Kalakshetra!

Incomparable to anyone she stands alone at the summit! It's an experience to watch her dance. Abhinaya at its zenith and most divine form. Not even once you feel she overdid it. I sometimes wonder where we lost this style of karanas till she discovered it. It's not easy to move body as she does. None of the other dancers can match her in this video. Out of all her disciples I think someone who comes a distant close to her is dancer Nirupama Rajendra. A legend in our times!!!

Thanks for posting- there is another video with Padma showing more acrobatic karanas so I do not know if these are the full 108 (as I did not count)- she has a video showing them by a dancer who was highly flexible at the time, not sure what video it is though but I have seen.

I used to love to see Dr Padma on South Asia newsweek when I was a kid
Suddenly I found Dr Padma Subramanyam, her dance is even more extraordinary than Yamini Krishnamurthy’s to my eyes. Her finesse is unbelievable. Thank god her dance has been recorded on video, it cannot die now. Humbled to have watched this goddess of Indian classical art.
Yamini was highly overrated. Watch any of her interview and you'll get the idea.

She is only one of the kind. When she dances u won't look at the technical perfection. The abhinaya and the graceful subtle movements take you to another level. But one thing I don't understand is why none of her disciples except Nirupama Rajendra could do any justice to her style. They all blindly try to imitate her only to deliver poor performances. Dancers like Vineeth try to poorly mimic 70 yrs old Padma !! Not only the abhinaya but their adavus also suffer with lethargy and boredom unlike Padma's . She cannot be imitated!!! The unique.
I don't know anything about classical dance but this dance made me open up my eyes to see the depth in human body expressions. Great mam... Love from Bangalore.
