this is great. I have wondered how I can effectively audition mic placement without the hassle of re-configuring between each mic placement. now I just need to find a willing participant.

I recorded my drums in a round low ceiling cellar with 4 mics including a ribbon, once in the side m / s miking position, and another time over the shoulder looking at the center of the kit. That way I didn't ear comb filtering.

Interesting how much more sensitive the Royer was compared to the AT. There was almost no change in the ceiling test...

That's the best mic stand that I have ever seen! Where can I get one?

This is a truly awesome demo, so simple yet so informative! It got me thinking though, have you ever tried the same with the figure-8 mic angled 45º in relationship to the ceiling/floor? I have a feeling if the mic isn't parallel to the source and the reflecting walls the comb filter would be reduced, but maybe you have tried it out and can prove I'm wrong. Sadly I don't have a figure-8 mic handy to try it myself. Cheers!

You should totally hit the cymbal on 1 every time all the time constantly on every song ever for the rest of your drumming life.

thanks! very informative, and the girl is lovely.
but shouldn't the test be performed against a reflective hard surface? since the foam on the wall help reduce the comb filtering

      fog152 She is, isn't she :)
Yes, a hard, reflective surface would accentuate the comb filtering effect, you're quite right. However, as a mere demonstration of the phenomenon, this seems to do pretty well. Besides, it just goes to show that it takes a lot more than a bit of foam on your wall to overcome acoustic limitations within a given environment.
