Thank you very much for this post. It ended with hours of trying to reconnect my Navigator V to the Garmin Express after a reset. Excellent job. All the best from Brazil.
Doing the happy dance! Your instructions were top notch. Oddly, the .SYSTEM folder never was visible on my computer, but I was able to find all the .img files with a quick search in Windows Explorer and finally free up wasted space in my internal storage. Hi is it possible to copy maps rom one garmin to another ?? I have one garmin with Europe maps which I would like to have on the second one that I have which only came with North America maps Regards
Hi, Unfortunately, each map is locked for the specific Garmin on which it is installed. You could copy it and transfer it to another one, but if you do the Garmin loads the maps but then it says " Can't Unlock Maps" and it will be useless. This problem is even more severe on newer models of Garmin on which even third-party unlocked maps will not work.
Thanks for the video! I have a DriveAssist 50 which wouldn't connect to a computer/ keeps power cycling when it is connected to a computer. According to the fault log in the hidden menu, this is due to bad memory handle on mtp main By changing it to mass storage mode I was able to get a stable computer connection to update the maps and software via both garmin Connect and base amp. Unfortunately reloading the software has not fixed the problem though as it still power cycles if I change it back to Mtp auto detect, but the mass storage setting is a good workaround!
Thanks, depending on the version of the firmware on it, the way you access the diagnostic page differs. Here are some common ways 1. Go to the volume control page then press and hold the upper right corner for about a minute or less. 2. Tap and hold your finger on the battery icon for about a minute or less. 3. Turn off the GPS Unit, then press and hold the bottom right corner of it while turning it ON with your other finger. Make sure not to accidentally delete all user data, because it will give you a pop-up window with the option to do so.
@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I've learnt so much from watching some of your Garmin GPS videos. Thank you for their useful content! I have two nuvi 2595 LMT units. The first unit, which I had years of saved addresses and scenic locations in, has begun to malfunction. The second unit has seen much less use, so I would not mind overwriting any content in the second unit. I wish I could move the list of saved locations (along with the names I'd assigned to them) from the first unit to the second unit. In your video you pointed out that the map file is typically the very large file with a .img extension. Would you happen to know if there is a specific file(name) containing the Saved addresses? Might I be able to copy that file (or files) from one unit to the other by simultaneously hooking up both units to a Windows laptop running Garmin Express? Thank you!
Greetings, thanks for the compliments. Yes, you can do that but not with Garmin Express, instead you need Garmin Base Camp Software which is free. Here is the link www.garmin.com/en-US/software/basecamp/
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thank you. A different issue came up: Despite enabling the "Mass Storage" under MTP in my 2595's settings, and enabling View Hidden Files in my laptop's folder options, when I explore the unit through my laptop's Windows Explorer I cannot see a System folder or any large .img files. Have you run into this issue and any suggestions to reveal where the 2595LMT's system files and map images are?
Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy watching them and find them very informative. As this is about system files and comments mention space, it brings up a question… Tried to get updated maps on a 2599lmt via Garmin express and wired into a laptop. The process stops saying there’s not enough free space on hard drive. Needs somewhere between 13-20 GB of free space on hard drive. That’s a huge amount of hard drive space needed. Also, it HAS to be on the hard drive C: …..can’t add an external hard drive , usb, or SD card on the computer, nor a micro sd card on the gps itself. When a gps with WiFi needs updating it CAN complete the map update if there is space on the micro sd card. I’m confused as to why they wouldn’t allow Garmin express to do the same as a unit with WiFi and if there’s enough space on the micro sd card to have the update work. Also, is there a workaround if there’s not enough C hard drive space? Thanks!
Thanks for your compliments. So the reason why it needs a lot of space on the heard drive is the additional files which are required for Garmin Map Source Application software. The map alone is only 4GB but the Junction View Files is another 800MB, the SID is another 1.2GB, and all the Voice files could add another 1GB or file size. When you do a direct WiFi update all these extras will not be loaded onto the GPS. Yes you could do a direct WiFi update of the maps, without connecting the GPS to a computer, but if the WiFi signal gets interrupted the whole things starts over. Meanwhile I don't recommend using Garmin Express for map update, try using GarminMapUpdater.exe
Hi, two things: - Didn’t explain myself well in the original post. Garmin has the technology to update 0:42 directly to an SD card ( via WiFi) if there’s not enough internal memory in the gps. Why don’t they use the same technology so you can update directly to a SD card in the gps if connected to a computer without enough space on its C hard drive? - Tried the GarminMapUpdater.exe method with two different GPS ( 2599LMTHD and 2555LM) and both failed with the message “ No unlocked maps were found on this device”. They both are lifetime map GPS’s so that doesn’t make sense. The 2555LM has 2022.20 maps installed which is the last time I did map updates. Back then the updates failed on the 2599LMTHD. That was out of the box never used prior, and now trying to update thru various methods has no maps. Maybe when you get a chance can you do a video on using the GarminMapUpdater.exe. Again, thanks for your help,
Thanks Tariq... Your techniques was working great through the 2022 updates... Just updated maps to 2023.10 on my Drive 51 and also no a nuvi 2595. Garmin has done it again and I cannot find the .System folder anymore. I need the JCV files. Any ideas/thoughts?
Very interesting stuff. I was wondering, on my new Drive 76, is there a way I can drop a SRF file I had on an older garmin into the Vehicles folder? It seems to be write protected. Thanks!
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thank you for the advice. I loaded up base camp, but after clicking through the all the menus I can’t seem to find anything that will allow an SRF UPLOAD. Thank you for your answer Sir - Hello Sir, thank you very much for giving me the name of this WebUpdater application. On the Garmin Zumo XT GPS; we cannot enter the interfaces as on your video by pressing on the top right as you do; this does not open the internal advanced settings interface. With MacBook Air and the use of Garmin Express the update stops on the way, it disables the reading of the gps map. On my old Windows 7; the GPS shows up with the triangle logo in the tree view, but not like a real hard drive with the system folder (so I can't do anything about it). I recovered the update that I put on an SD support; but since I can't get into the root GPS hard drive, system folder, I can't change the update files (Gma, unl and img.) . I just updated my Garmin Drivesmart 51 with the latest maps a few minutes ago. I notice there is NO LONGER a .SYSTEM folder in the root directory of internal storage. However, when I searched for .img files in the internal storage, it brought up ALL the .img files in the internal storage. Then, you must click on "open file location" of one of these files and then the .system folder, with all the contents, magically becomes accessible. Close it all out, and no longer see a .SYSTEM folder when you reopen the internal storage of the GPS with windows explorer. What kind of programming trick hides .the system folder UNTIL you search for something you know would be present in that folder?
You were absolutely right. I thought I had already enabled the system files view because I could already see the .jdminfo folder which looks like a system folder. When I double-checked and saw I had NOT enabled it, after enabling it the .System folder was visible. Thanks for correcting my mistake! @@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
nice video. I have a question, maybe you have a solution. I have a Zumo XT2 and want to connect it via usb cable to a Android tablet ( Samsung A8) an send gpx files from the tablet to the gps. In the MTP settings you can't select mass storage, just usb tethering and usb tethering single action. Once connected you see the gps in the MTP host but from the moment you want to move/copy a gpx file to the gps internal memory /sd card , it bloks.

I would like to purchase a new Garmin. I would like one with the latest navigation system. But I do not need to speak to the unit nor listen to music, get messages, etc. Strictly good navigation, don't want to pay for unnecessary fluff. Any recommendations?
Hi, all the newer models have extra stuff that you may never need. So I would go with the that has the largest screen and free Lifetime Map updates. This means shop for any model that ends with LM or LMT. For example Gamin Drive 50LM
This helped me with an installation problem on my nuvi 2689LMT. Hi, First make sure that your Garmin unit doesn't have WiFi, because if it does you don't need any USB Cable, the updates can be done through WiFi. If you don't have WiFi make sure that USB Cables are Data Cables which has 4 wires, and not a (Charge Only) cable which has 2 wires. If it is indeed the correct type of cable, then you must have a lose USB port on your Garmin, which requires taking it apart and re-soldering it. Thanks

I have a smartdrive 66, I sealed it with silicon and made it water proof to use on my motorcycle. Used it for over a year with no issue. However I bought a cardo headset to my surprise the garmin connects only to say its not compatible with the headset. I contacted garmin was told I must buy their more expensive Zuma gps to use my headset. So basically they limit the ability to sell another device. Is there a way to modify the Bluetooth driver to be compatible with a headset?
Unfortunately you can't do that on a Garmin SmartDrive 66, you can only do it on Garmin Zumo GPS models. On some older models such as Garmin Nuvi 755, 765, 780 etc. They come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, then you can buy a cheap $10 headphone jack to Bluetooth adapter like this one www.ebay.com/itm/284569198861
Thank you. I have the same Garmin but it no longer shows my maps even if I do updates. Can I fix the Garmin with your method of accessing the maps folder?
No problem, first try the easier way from the Garmin itself without connecting it to a PC by going to: Settings/Maps/My Maps/and make sure to check the box on the left side of each map. If that doesn't work then connect it to your PC and try using GarminMapUpdater.exe
I just fixed this problem thanks to this video. I went to update my maps and it told me there wasn't enough space and then I had no maps. Tried Garmin Express, no luck. Buy a 64 gig Class 10 Micro SD card, same problem. I left it alone and used Waze for a year which would tell you to drive around your own block seven times before it admitted you were at your location. Anyway, there was no map folder. Maybe it was on the small (8gb card) and when I removed it, the folder went with it? Either way, put the new card in, the unit formatted it. then I added a map folder via windows and tried the update. After a year of being stuck with collision detection only, I now have maps.
I did this with my Garmin Drive 60 and it bricked my Garmin. It will no longer boot to the main menu. I have tried everything.....It will turn on and I can get to "loading maps" but it never loads, it just stays there forever. Is there anything I can do to get it working again??
Yes, you can use GarminWebUpdater.exe to reinstall all the system files that are probably misplaced or accidentally deleted. Remember not GarminExpess but Garmin Web Updater.

Here is the problem: I have a Garmin 660 Lm motorcycle GPS that works as a GPS device (shows maps and tracking, etc), but if I attempt to connect it to a computer to add a custom route the computer will not recognize the device. The green loading bar starts to craw across the screen only to stop about 8 tenths of the away from the end.. I tried setting back to factory, a second computer. It does not show up on the (drive) section on the computers. I was wondering if you came across this problem before. Thanks in advance if you have any suggestions.
So this is a long shot but do you know the answer to this. I bought Garmin SD card with European region. When I go to Europe next month can I just pop this SD in and it will work? Or is there anything else I have to do?
I recommend that before you go to Europe first try the card at home to make sure the Garmin reads it and it will not say " Can't Unlock Maps". If it does say that then either the map is not compatible with your Garmin or it's not a Genuine Garmin Map.
It could be, but there are many other reasons that could also prematurely terminate the map update process. For example: a bad WiFi strength, High Security Settings on your Firewall, Lack of enough storage in your Garmin GPS, Bad Micro SD Card etc.
GARMIN always seems to have some problems, depending on what day it is. From not connecting, telling you the connection lead is incorrect, long delays, etc, etc, etc! Then it seems that some days certain features work, other days they don't. It's a bleeding pain!

Continue to press and hold the screen until you get the prompt to erase all user data, click yes and you are all good to go.
The most important files such as POI, Maps, JCV, SID are all hidden. So if you want to manually drag and drop new map files you will need to have access to the hidden files.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 My English is poor but I'll try to explain. I have several clients with coordinates and inserting them one by one would be complicated since there are about 1,000 clients, so I wanted to know if I could insert these coordinates in a block, like a file with the appropriate extension directly in the system folder. I would edit it in a notepad, client name and coordinates, and then insert all the clients at once. I know this is possible in IGO but I don't know if this would be possible in Garmin even if I could access it through the PC.

Hi is it possible to copy maps rom one garmin to another ?? I have one garmin with Europe maps which I would like to have on the second one that I have which only came with North America maps

@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101Thank you ! That’s very clever from Garmin
Thanks for the video! I have a DriveAssist 50 which wouldn't connect to a computer/ keeps power cycling when it is connected to a computer. According to the fault log in the hidden menu, this is due to bad memory handle on mtp main
By changing it to mass storage mode I was able to get a stable computer connection to update the maps and software via both garmin Connect and base amp.
Unfortunately reloading the software has not fixed the problem though as it still power cycles if I change it back to Mtp auto detect, but the mass storage setting is a good workaround!
Try updating it with Garmin Webupdater.exe instead of Garmin Express.
Great info, but I have a "dezl OTR 800", so my home screen is completely different! How do I find my Diagnostics Page???
Thanks, depending on the version of the firmware on it, the way you access the diagnostic page differs. Here are some common ways

Here is the link

@@petatube On your Windows computer you must be logged on as the Administrator.
Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy watching them and find them very informative.
As this is about system files and comments mention space, it brings up a question…
Tried to get updated maps on a 2599lmt via Garmin express and wired into a laptop.
Thanks very much for the explanation. I will try the GarminMapUpdater.exe
Hi, two things:
- Didn’t explain myself well in the original post.

I just updated my Garmin Drivesmart 51 with the latest maps a few minutes ago. I notice there is NO LONGER a .SYSTEM folder in the root directory of internal storage. Thanks

No problem
Garmin express is not detecting nuvi 2689
What do you think the reason?
I tried 2 laptops mac and windows and all failed
Try the Garmin Web Updater, you can get it from Garmin's website and search for GarminWebUpdater.exe
Thanks Mr Khalid
can internal hidden maps move to sd card?without damage the sistem?
Some of the hidden maps are required for the Garmin Operating System to functions. For example the Garmin Base Map.

Hi everyone, the 'next action" in the green bar on the top of the screen stopped working suddenly. Now It just shows "Continue to .....". My device is a Garmin Drivesmart 51. Software is updated and reset has been done 3 times. Is there any solution of this issue ? Thanks in advance.
Backup all your data, and do a Hard Reset, not soft reset.
Thank you for your reply. I'm trying to do the "Hard reset" by pressing the right top corner into Volume menu and then "Clear all user data". Is that correct ? (If yes, problem still exists).
@@SK-tj3yy You are welcome. No that is soft reset, hard reset is when you turn off the GPS. Then press and hold the bottom right corner of the screen while turning it back ON. Continue to hold the bottom right corner of the screen until you get the clear all data message. Press yes, restart the GPS, and see if that fixes the issue.
NOTE: On some versions of the DriveSmart GPS it is not the bottom right corner but the top right corner or top left corner.
I followed your instructions, reset completed but the problem still persists. Is there any other action to do in order to solve the problem ? Thank you.
@@SK-tj3yy Try settings and enable Map Layers.
How can we perform the same in nuvi 1440 and 1300
On the Nuvi 1300 1350 1390 1400 1450 1490 you don't have to do any changes on the GPS itself. However you do have to do the Windows Folder Options part, because the ( .system ) folder will be invisible otherwise.
Mine internal storage îs missing text and keyboard folders...webupdater didnt fix that :(
You need to reinstall the System Files manually.
Excellent, as usual! I had been wondering about that. Makes complete sense. I guess this characteristic is designed to help prevent files from being inadvertently delete/changed.
Question: I deleted some unwanted voice files (not in .system). How to recover them if I never saved them off the unit? Is there a repository? ( I guess, how to reset/recover unit to initial system with complete set of files)
Once again, your production is ace. 👍
Thank you for you kind comment, I truly appreciate it. About the voice you don't have to worry because you can get them all back by running Garmin Web Updater, not Garmin Express. If you need help I can make another video on that.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Yes, I can see that as well as in Express. I think I wasn't clear in my question, my fault. I should have asked, is there a way to restore ALL files as were initially on the GPS? This would include Themes, Keyboards, POI, Text. I see Vehicles can be downloaded as well as languages and voices. I'd even go to Maps as well. So, if one "accidentally" deleted everything, what is/are the process to restore to original specs?
Again, excellent work.

Hello Sir and thank you very much for your video , very usefull. Now I have an issue wirh a Zumo 396 with 50 routes in its internal memory and I´m not able to get to erase the route, many are corrupted. Iam working on a Mac. Do you, please, have any idea how to get to the hidden memory? The Garmin in europe just give the run around,. Thank you for your answer whatever it is pos o neg. Have a good day, Best Regards
Hi, Open Terminal by typing "Terminal" in the search bar. Then, enter the command defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES as an administrative user. Reinitialize Finder by rebooting or clicking Finder while holding Option and selecting Relaunch. This method can expose critical system files, so you can revert the setting by entering the same command with "NO" instead of "YES"
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thanks so much for your kind help. Terminal tells me "command not found" .
This Garmin crap is so aggravating... The issue is really that the command ERASE ALL USER DATA leaves the routes out. This is the situation. Called Garmin Iberia(Spain) they have no idea , I mean lost in space. I THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP, REALLY.
@@wbrunol@wbrunol You are very welcome; in that case, try to borrow a PC from someone or buy a used Windows 7 Laptop for really cheap on eBay. You can find them fully working for under $50 here is an example www.ebay.com/itm/196479397748

Good morning! Just to let you know, I plugged in my Zumo to my Mac, opened the finder and Press Command + Shift + . (period) to make the hidden files appear. You can also do the same from inside the Documents, Applications, and Desktop folders. FYI . Gratefully😊😊

I have a problem with the Diagnostic Page. After i successfully found it, the MTP setting isn't there. I searched for a solution but there is nothing on this topic. Do you know how i can fix it?
I can help, but only if you could tell me the exact model number of you Garmin GPS
Very good video however I did mine just like yours and it still does not show the .system file???
You also need to do the Folder Options part on your PC
Wow great quick response... Yes of course I did do it on my PC,, that was what I meant by did it just like yours. I paused right at that point and then did mine the same, the .system file doesnt appear 😞
@@1badcj8 Make sure that you are logged in on your PC as the "Administrator" otherwise you will have limited access to system files or advanced folder options.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Yes sir I am the administrator and it is on and password protected, of course. Crazy,, I may just give up on the Garmin thing and go back to using my Tablet for navigating, easy and less headache 🙂

Doesn't work for my Garmin 1450 LMT
On the Nuvi 1450LMT you don't have to do anything on the GPS unit itself, just do the PC part to be able to see the .system folder.
On Garmin 560 DEZL it's not working, no this kind of menu and hidden files still hidden even in windows it show all hidden files.
Press and hold the battery icon
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I already tried it but it's another kind of menus for testing. Maybe something happened with this old 560 DEZL for truck when it has been updated. I really don't understand why I can see few of hidden folder, but not the system folder.

Doesn't work with some garmin automotive devices,as garmin have stated.
Yes Garmin Automotive devices are proprietary devices that are manufactured for specific vehicle brand. The do not follow the general rule of all other Garmin's standalone devices.

Thanks for the secrets. Garmin has never been user friendly . How can I clean internal memory? It does not load new routes saying interna memory is full
You are very welcome. So before you do that keep in mind that all your saved locations and trip logs will be deleted. If you still want to do it here is how. To clear system memory: Turn off the GPS, Press and hold the bottom right corner of the LCD screen with one hand while turning it ON with the other hand. What is the point of having access to the hidden files ? You didn’t show the reason for doing this
The most important files such as POI, Maps, JCV, SID are all hidden. So if you want to manually drag and drop new map files you will need to have access to the hidden files.
I dont see system files
Enable " Video Hidden Files and Folders" in Windows Control Panel's Folder Options.
on pc ok on mac not work thank you

So how i CAM put points like client? How past i need put? What extension ? Thanks
I am sorry but I failed to understand your question. Could you please rephrase it for me?
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 My English is poor but I'll try to explain. I have several clients with coordinates and inserting them one by one would be complicated since there are about 1,000 clients, so I wanted to know if I could insert these coordinates in a block, like a file with the appropriate extension directly in the system folder. I would edit it in a notepad, client name and coordinates, and then insert all the clients at once. I know this is possible in IGO but I don't know if this would be possible in Garmin even if I could access it through the PC.
