There is something sadly wrong with the NBA reffing fraternity! They must think that the fans are paying to watch them work, how screwed up, they better get their act together and start calling the game as it is played, not acting on whether their feelings were hurt or their authority was challenged.

After a flagrant foul was called against a defender, Luka went to the other team's bench and appeared to be saying that he was fine. The ref t'd him up for going over there and on the next play called a ridiculously tick-tacky foul. When Luka responded with his customary incredulity he was thrown out of the game for good. I like that idea. That is so much better than just throwing guys out.
But imagine how detrimental it would be seeing Jokic get penalty boxed for 2 minutes and now Denver has to scramble to survive that time.
Ejections, especially of superstars only hurts the fans who pay to go see these all world basketball players.

Eh. Just give him a tech, like they're supposed to and it's fine. A tech for one bad word even seems like too much to me but wouldn't have been a huge deal. Ejection over a bad word seems infantile.

Freedom of speech does not mean you can say whatever you want and have no repercussions. There's nothing wrong with being punished over words. If that wasn't the case, making verbal death threats wouldn't be a crime.
However, I do agree that these refs are taking things to the next level. One technical foul leading to an ejection is asinine, but I also wonder what Jokic said to the ref. If it's something as little as saying "bitchass," or whatever, then I think the ejection is ridiculous. However, if Jokic said something like "kill yourself," then yeah, an ejection is warranted. I guess we'll never know what Jokic said.
I also do like your idea of penalty box.

The important question not being asked is why are refs allowed to keep making egregious errors with out getting better. NBA officiating is hard but the refs are constantly getting worse and taking out their lack of good call making on players questioning it. Sure the NBA supposedly monitors every call. But that doesn't seem to be making the officiating any better. Players will always complain about calls but over all players actually have better cases to complain the past few years than decades past. Especially ones like Jokic, who's FG shooting stats prove he should be getting to the line more, if you compare them to league or all star averages.

Refs are getting too thin skinned. There needs to be a line. Players verbally abusing refs can't be tolerated. But at the same time refs have to understand that if they miss or make a bad call, they're gonna catch some flack, and you can't go ejecting players cause you're all up in your feelings and don't think you should have to hear any criticism. Ejecting a player for one bad word is over the top. No one came to see the refs and they shouldn't let their feelings have any outcome on the game or hinder someone's MVP run.

Tough question, should there be a tow-tier system for on court justice? Also, think about how fans feel when they come to see a superstar only to find them our for "load management." I recall the days of Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe when umpires had to endure outrageous verbal abuse since giving them the boot would have deprived the tourney of their star attraction. Wish I had the answers, I don't.

Way to go Rich! There's something thoroughly FLAWED with the reffing, throughout. in the playoffs, when it counts they really choke. And when you mention the EaST/wEST games. There's no realization of what is at stake. How does one get BETTER refs? Dunno. I turn games off once I see the refs NOT making basic calls like egregious FOULS. And people like Green should be thrown out. (Golden State Draemon Green) The 'enforcer' crap should have thrown out with Rudy Tomjanovch's career-ending broken jaw. This isn't the NFL, or is it?

Out of all of the big 4 North American sports (Basketball, Baseball, Football and Hockey), Basketball has the most out of control officiating. Not only do refs think they are more important than they actually are but when they make a bad call or miss an obvious call they do one of two things that just make things worse. They either 1.) Just brush it off and act like it was the right call (which just pisses off the team impacted by the call) or 2.) They use that mistake to do “make up calls”, which further skews play because Basketball is a game of runs (this tends to piss of both because the balance of the game is further screwed with). And the fact that the league doesn’t seem to crack down on this crap is absurd, it’s like Angel Hernandez still being allowed to umpire ANY game of baseball.
