I think if I had read this as a physical/e copy I probably would have struggled with Sylah and her POV but because I listened to the audiobook i REALLY appreciated her nuance, complexity and he contradictions because the Voice Actor Nicole Lewis really brought her to life and humanised her for me. Plus this was my first foray in Adult Fantasy as opposed to YA (something I have been intimidated by for a long time) so having the audiobook really helped me follow along all the weaving plot points and povs etc. As a voice actor myself I am DEFinitely an audiobook girlie, but I really recommend for those concerned that Sylah might not be for them.

I haven’t heard anyone else talk about this, but your review makes me want to get to it soon!

I think the things you disliked about Final Strife aren't a thing in The Battle Drum (Book 2), and geez do things really get way more intense....it is SO good.

I'm glad you enjoyed this! This was definitely a surprise hit for me last year, and I'm really looking forward to see what happens in book 2 + I do want to nominate the author for the Astounding Award.

From all I’ve heard, it sounds overwhelmingly complicated

Nah it’s actually not that complicated once you get into it. Not any more complicated than most fantasy books.

Yeah Sylah does not sound like my kind of character...
