I think the biggest piece of info that I forgot to mention is when we're looking at perks/inspirations, when it says it affects your destroyer/cruiser/battleship in the perk description, it only applies to that class. If it doesn't mention the class or it says it affects your ships abilities, then that inspiration or perk applies to any class that you put the build on. Also, when it comes to the more scare resources, insignias and commendations, you initially want to spread those out among the commanders that you are using on your builds, as opposed to putting a lot in one commander. So for instance, lets say we have 7 blue commendations, you can either put all seven of those into one commander to get him to legendary level 3, or you could get 7 commanders to legendary level 1. You should promote the 7 commanders to legendary 1 instead of one commander to legendary level 3 in that instance.
For starting out try to upgrade a commander that will benefit a line of ships, example: better accuracy of cruiser guns you would want to rank up Norman Scott. Then you can you him on all your cruisers for any nation.
Great tutorial TBull. Wish it had been available a year ago. At any rate, I’m mostly aligned with your recommendations except for the German ship lines commanders. Will take a second look based on your advice.
I literally took notes throughout this video. Thank goodness for the CC group, especially you Tbull, because WG does a piss-poor job explaining how this works. I too have the obligatory Murica-Dewey ranked way too high and made some other bad choices in spending Commander resources before I saw CCs explain the right way to do things. This video is by far the most in depth explanation so thanks a bunch for creating it!
I’ve been playing around with Madden as a Battleship commander inspiration. He provides an increase in turret traverse speed like Kedrov, but he also speeds up the main battery reload as well. I run a lot of German BBs and I’m currently using Hipper with Madden and di Revel as inspirations for König, Gneisenau, and Odin. I still use the standard tank/brawler build of Ciliax with Hipper and Madden as inspirations for Scharnhorst and Bayern. So far I’ve been having a lot of success with these builds.
The problem with Madden is his inspirations, though useful, are marginal in what you're gaining. Early on in the game when there was very little option in inspirations, he made sense. Now, you have more options and you can do much better for inspirations. As a BB commander, Madden is quite good. He reinforces heals, especially the super heals several Brit BBs have. Also, he preserves mobility. The Brits have several fast BBs and preserving that asset can be important.
My humble opinion, the commander system and creating builds for ships is some of the most fun in this game. I really enjoy transforming a ship from a turd to a champion with the correct build for me.
Nice video. The only suggestion I have is to explain how upgrading the commander maximizes their skills, ie, 10L1 maxes row1, 12L2 maxes row 2, etc. And then it would be good to explain that different nations typically have unique skills, eg, megalomania for the French BBs, the third row anti-dispersion skill on the American cruiser commanders, etc.
Im glad to finally have commander filters. For the longest time I had only Dewey and Scheer - back when you could get duplicate commanders all the time - and I have these up to Lv 14 each but built for specific ships, Scheer commands my VP Freidrich and Dewey commands my Kidd (3 heals!!) with specific inspirations and they go all right. I like Burke on my US Destroyers with a more torpedo build, like the Benham. The most fun in the game is figuring out builds to get that edge, however so slight, in performance. Peace.
IMO Togo is the superior CV commander for the Japanese CVs. You get 4 knots of torp speed, concealment, and consumable reload boost. Also, Simms is a solid DD inspiration if you have limited options.
If you compare him skill for skill vs Tamon, it’s no contest in favour to Togo. Also I know the consensus is that the Lexington is the supperior CV, but I think Shokaku with a high level Togo and high level Captain Fishy inspiration is the strongest CV build, as long as you can aim torps...and with 58 knot torps, it’s not super difficult. Plus you get the IJN CV concealment, with additional concealment from Togo.
While im extremely happy to see the many views this training/ explanatory video is receiving and the fact that our commander system has improved in night and day ways for all the new players..... I still look at my Dewey..... with unbridled resentment as to its high levels. It took forever to get a new American commander. Lol
Great video! When I started there were only 21 commanders in the game...so many more now. If I were starting today I'd of course follow your solid advice, but in addition I'd be buying those 3 crates for 10.5mil silver every week to boost my roster. I've got all the commanders and I still buy those most weeks to get commendations. Thanks for this upload...enjoyed watching and hope it gets a lot of views!
You gotta remember when you're just getting rolling with this game, there is a huge demand for silver resources to get all the ships unlocked. I normally don't recommend getting those commander crates until your navy is fleshed out, otherwise you won't have any boats for all those commanders to use and they'll get stuck at a desk job with George Dewey
If you own any of the ships in the fire power pack, you get gold for them. I got almost 20k gold, 10k for the Arizona, 7k for the Texas + 2500k from the pack, a month of premium as well. I spent $13.00 for the pack with $5.99 for shipping from wally world(Walmart)
To me Kurita I only use on the Akizuiki since it's the only gunboat in the IJN line while all the others are straight torps boats and have the best concealment so no real need to have T&T since you will spot them before they spot you. Kinkaid for the US cruiser is my maneuverability build.
Btw good video, watched to the end even with 6000 games played. Been considering Vian and Russian dude for minimum ricochet angle. For Frenchies use the perk for reduced concealment while speed boost active, best concealment in the game if situationally used correctly.
Lol, I completed the entire American line with Dewey's before I got my 2nd American commander. Those don't realize that in the early days we only got 15k commander xp for dups. Dewey's inspiration is handy in Arena and ranked, js. Scott and Madden for cruisers, Hipper and Maden for BB, BAY and the British DD, these are my inspiration choices. What do I know, lol, I always make the top, both in ranked and arena. I'm at 7800 games. I'll mow your ass down, lol! PS: Make sure you take advantage of the resets with the updates, you can get twice the promotion orders every 5th week
At lvl13 when you start to use insignias you also still use commander XP but if you don't have enough commander it will convert Global XP which I have made the mistake of doing back when I was new.
One note. I find I use so much speed and gunfire on the French lines... I tend to not worry about the last bit of incremental conceal. U might want to do that if u get an ALL OUT SKILL with Philip. Yet u might find ur self in too deep to escape if ur an aggressive player like me vs Destroyers early. However.. to balance my French I use Philip A. I focus as much on guns and a tad more than the torps. With speed and distance u can be hard to hit and firing a lot ... damage stacks over time. And concealment is of lesser to little use here. I add HYDE to Ruffin the skin on my destroyer. How many times are u left with such a small amount of energy? I add speed inspiration for the second.
Just want to add that Cunningham's inspiration is about shell grouping instead of accuracy or dispersion. I actually also upgraded him to 16/2 too but now I rarely use him except for fench bb which has four gun on each turret. For other BB like German bb which mostly has only 2 guns on each turret, grouping or not isn't that bigger deal. Great video as always tbull 👍
So how much influence does an inspiration have on base CDR stats? If your base CDR has 5% concealment, does the inspiration add a portion or all of their percentages depending on level,or what? And how much does the inspirations own inspiration add?
Only the inspiration itself is applied, that Captain's build has no effect. Not sure what CDR stands for, but if your 1000 damage AP shell gets a 5% AP damage buff, then it's now a 1050 damage shell
What is the difference in the distinction the game makes between “shell grouping” and “dispersion”. I see a lot of people just refer to the buffs as accuracy. Still having sub par damage per salvo results out of Iowa.
When you pull the trigger the game assigns an oval around the target representing where the shells can possibly land. The better the dispersion, the small the oval. At that point there is a random roll to determine the point inside the oval that the shells are aimed at, and the tighter the grouping, the closer the shells will all land to that point
I have a 16/2 Dewey. I got this game when it came out and it was nearly impossible to get the commanders you needed, so I was stuck using him on an Iowa..
Yeah I was in the same boat. Thank God they fixed the commander crates so they wouldn't give out duplicates (which didn't even give commendations back then)
Yeah the digital download is free and is the same game as the ultimate edition. Basically what you're buying with that is a code that you plug into the WG website, and then the ships and other goodies are credited to you account
Well fml. Wish I wouldn't have been a moron and found this earlier. If only you could see my commanders.. didn't realize that the inspirations were based off the level of the commander for some reason I just thought it was a flat perk kind of thing. Back to the grind lol
The different Dewey names had me rolling. Duke of Dewey 😂

I'm with you on Vian! Very useful on smaller classes.
