This is acted so well! She is the only Turandot I ever believed from a dramatic standpoint. Most people comment that she suddenly without warning melts. With Marton, you see a scared woman from her entrance. Clearly Turandot has some trust issues, and when he guesses the riddles she is both frightened, but fascinated.
Thank you for your comments about the acting. The problem with this opera is that they all strive to win the winner for the hand of a psychopath. I don't think her trust issues justify the killing of her suitors. I know it's opera, but still it's cold blooded murder. No male character would be so easily tolerated or accepted. How do you feel about Don Jose, Canio, Lt Pinkerton, Count Orly?
yes I wondered the same. But, it's just a story. It has other flaws. The Ping, Pang and Pong arias are irrelevant to the story and should have been edited down. Nontheless, the finished product is fantastic! Especially this version, imo. @@shirleyrombough8173
MWG ............saw it live on PBS live from the MET ......years later I talked to a MET trombone player and said it was the most expensive creation put on !!! hope you heard Peter Allen narrations, a Zeffirelli and Livine Masterpiece ......still got the VHS tape of it .......well used !!!!!!!
Il finale di Alfano è entrato nella storia, che piaccia o no. A me piace il trionfalismo finale e a chi dice che Puccini l’avrebbe fatto diversamente non merita rispondere perché è cosa ovvia e non valutabile.
Puccini left 23 pages of sketches which Alfano used as follows. Beginning with rehearsal 35, we have 56 measures by Puccini followed by 8 measures before r 39, by Alfano. At R 39' we have 23 measures by Puccini. Alfano added 13 measures before r 42. For the Aria "Del Primo Pianto", Puccini wrote the first 5 measures, the remainder of the aria composed by Alfano. Puccini composed the 11 measure revelation of the Prince's name beginning at r46. From r 49 to the end of the opera, Alfano mostly adapted music from earlier in the opera. Other sketches used by Alfano: r 41, 4 measures by P which Alfano used twice more in the following aria. At R 50, we have Puccini's trumpet fanfares. And finally, Puccini indicated the return of the "Nessun Dorma" theme preceded by the "Mai nessun m'avra" motive from r 38. Alfano's longer first version has been recorded and is now available as part of the complete opera with Sondra Radvanosky and Jonas Kauffman. There's less of Puccini's sketches and much more of Alfano's own music.
In the quiet darkness, while you lay fast asleep...I am coming ever nearer, in the darkness deep...to flood you with my passion, before the coming day....and drink a kiss of ecstasy as in my arms you lay
The way she just turns her face away from his after the kiss, puts her hand gently over her mouth, is just breathtaking. It's almost what she desired, but couldn't bring herself to think it, and when it happens, she just succumbs...
Domingo's voice is gorgeous, of course, but I prefer the way his compatriot Carreras plays this, more delicately and judiciously, aware that this woman, albeit powerful, is afraid and the patroness of a terrible history.
Principessa Principessa At this point Franco Alfano completed Turandot for Puccini as he died of Throat Cancer he took sketches /fragments of pieces Puccini wrote together to complete the Opera , always wondered how the Opera would have been sounded pieced together with more of his magical music in place of Alfano interpretation if Puccini had lived long enough so sad , but he did a good job in such difficult circumstances 😔👏a fine video of the Opera especially Barbara Hendricks singing LUI 👏🤷♀️
LOVELY PRODUCTION.MARTON IS PERFECT.SUPER.DOMINGO , OVERESTIMATED , HIS VOICE HAS A VERY WEAK TOP.HE ALWAYS ACT THE SAME I ALL HIS ROLES.VIVA LA MARTON , A GREAT TURANDOT.
It that time of his career his extremely high register was not always reliable. But as critics said who saw this, it did not really matter as everything else he sang was great and if course superb acting. That's why this is classic despite some flaws. In his 70s turandots in the US, Verona, Spain the high notes were far more secure. Brigit Nielssen loved his performances. I would kill to have seen this production. Eva Marton at the end (who was great) on this night blew her lines. That is why in the end you hear a few boohs and she is incensed. Still a great night.
These voices will never be heard again. They were unique.

It's a beautiful spectacle, well sung and well acted. But where is the Puccini in this opera?
.. to be winner in this opera...

Agreed about a scared woman. She is genuinely terrified when Calaf solves the last riddle. She’s falling apart until he gives her a way out.
It’s the tears….Marton really cries here….that’s some incredible acting to go along with the incredible singing on her part.
Just watched this on Met On Demand. BLEW ME AWAY!

The music is so rich
It’s the Finale composed by Alfano, a very underrated composer indeed

This is the best Turandot version I've heard. Leona Mitchell in particular is fantastic in her role. She is the best Liu I have seen and heard. Thanks
Were you at the theatre then?
JI ................at the time it was the most expensive and extravagant MET profomance !!!!
Emociona q mas se puede decir…
GRANDIOSO
Sublime !
In the quiet darkness, while you lay fast asleep...I am coming ever nearer, in the darkness deep...to flood you with my passion, before the coming day....and drink a kiss of ecstasy as in my arms you lay
Magnificet.
Have the dvd, love it,the production is stunning, saw it at Covent Garden 70;years ago,not a patch on this!

Schauspielerisch u gesanglich großartig 🙏wie könnte ihm da eine Turandot widerstehen 💕
Marton is superb.
Correction Leona Mitchell apologies beautifully sung as LUI 👍🤷♀️
Domingo un Calaf al límite. Gritón
…He always was…! RDS
MARAVILLOSOS
Where are the subtitles?

In this performance Liu was sung by Leona Mitchell. Hendricks sang it (also stunningly beautiful) on the Karajan recording.

Your comment is more akin to a football fanatic waving his team's jersey, than someone who appreciates art.
Considering she just murdered Liu.....
Domingo è sempre in difficoltà,che dispiacere
…PD should not have sung this role as his voice is inappropriate, lacks dramatic potential whenever needed. Eva Marton is great!
