Domingo tripping over that chair was an amazing moment tbh. It adds a bit of character to the performance, and I'll be damned if he didn't play off that fall like a champ. Absolutely amazing performance.
This is a blinding piece of theatre. Most actors could not inhabit their roles with the same intensity as Domingo and Stratas. The point at which Domingo stumbles over a wooden stool simply adds to the character's pathos. Awesome.
DOMINGO AND STRATAS HAVE A BETTER RICORDING OF PAGLIACCIO AND DIRECED BY THE GREAT ITALIAN ZEFIRELLI, THAT IS ALL OF THEM CLOS TO THE IMPOSSIBLE. I MET DOMINGO WHEN HE DID TOSCA IN OSLO. IN 1980+ AFTER A NICE TALCK…..MY WIFE AND ME TRYED TO HEAR HIM MANY TIME WHEN HE WAS SINGING I BERLIN. AND OTHER OPERAS. WITH RESPECT…….BRYNJAR HOFF
Fantastic combination of voice and acting. Domingo was a brilliant actor with one of the greatest tenor voices. Unfortunately greater voices (Pavarotti) couldn’t act.
Bravo !!! Bravoooo !! What a master of the interpretation Domingo was!!!. I listened to other opera singers who sang very well the aria "vesti la giuba", but the best performance of Canio during the masterpiece "Il pagliacci" belongs to Domingo. He's the master!!!
Fantastic Domingo & Stratas. I've only seen three Canios in the theater, but they were great: Vickers, truly terrifying; Pav, sang beautifully but just stood like a lamppost; Domingo, who combines the opulent voice with an overwhelmingly character. Watch out for stray chairs!
There are another two great Canio"s - Ronald Dowd and Donald Smith , both Australian and of international standing . A must to listen too . Oh , and 'boy' could they act out the role -superb like Domingo .
This is an incredible performance. Domingo and Stratas are truly the best vocally and in acting. The anguish of Canio and the fear of Nedda are palpable. And listen to their voices.
Wonderful Domingo and Stratas. Placido owns this role just as Tito Gobbi owns Scarpia and Callas owns Tosca. And Rosa Ponselle owns anything she wants.
White heat. How well I remember seeing this on PBS in the spring or very early summer of 1978, when I was 18. This was actually a Cav and Pag from the Met. Domingo was the Turiddu as well as Canio. If memory serves, Troyanos was the Santuzza and Vern Shinall the Alfio. Milnes was of course the Tonio; his Prologo from this production is readily available on RUclips. Quite sure that Levine conducted both operas --
Thank you for sharing this with us, it is wonderful. Domingo carried on despite the combative stool and Stratas kept apace, even ejecting the offending prop for all our sakes. A very, very good version of Pagliaci. I hope one day to see the rest of it. After seeing this version, I think it works after all for Canio to say "La commedia è finita!" just as much as when Tonio says it. Domingo and Stratas worked together many times and it was glorious. I only wish more of their work were available on DVD. The world needs more like them. They're both quietly known for their humanitarianism. They don't need more attention for it, but more emulation.

Tremendous performance. Both Domingo and Stratas, superb singers but also able to act their roles to the fullest. You can just see the play character taking over Canio's better self. And you can see the very moments when Nedda first realises something is wrong, and then that Canio knows the truth, and she has a portent of what is to come. Best performance I'll see in my lifetime.
Ah... the famous Met audience. Never waiting until the final chord is finished with the applause. And I can't say that I'm a fan of giving Tonio's closing line to Canio. I have seen it in quite a few productions and never liked it.
What you really mean is the loudest shouter, thats all that MDM was good for, bawling away regardless at the expense of all the other musical attributes which he did not possess or did not chose to use.
Yes, because this is the scenery presented by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The only difference is that the Domingo performance is in the 1970´s, while Pavarotti´s is in the 1990´s. Best Regards!
After listening to this and other famous tenor's renditions I have to admit that Kaufmann's strong and full voice does the most justice to this highly dramatic scenery. The most vigor which is an absolut must here. And I am not an all time fan of Kaufmann. Just compare renditions....
Domingo tripping over that chair was an amazing moment tbh. It adds a bit of character to the performance, and I'll be damned if he didn't play off that fall like a champ. Absolutely amazing performance.
Thought it was intentional. He's voice didn't change and yeah, added a lot of character to the scene, how cool is that
He got his foot caught in the chair. He acted like he meant to do that. What a pro!
He did mean to do it. In the scene, the character Pagliaccio is supposed to be drunk.
@@johnhoie1 I don't think you're correct, but okay
Not sure if it was intended or accidental. Maybe he was so caught on the character that he didn't care about anything else but his fight and anger.
5:51 That was quite a fall and he keeps singing like nothing happened - Domingo is THE MAN!
I am not sure if it was planned or not.
This is a blinding piece of theatre. Most actors could not inhabit their roles with the same intensity as Domingo and Stratas. The point at which Domingo stumbles over a wooden stool simply adds to the character's pathos. Awesome.
