So you want to be a zoo keeper? ....
With the elephants of Twycross Zoo eating over 250kg of food a day there’s going to be an enormous amount of waste to clean up. It’s up to zookeeper Matt O’Leary and his team to keep on top of this daily mountain of dung. It’s a stinky job but this crew doesn’t mind as long as it’s keeping their big Indian friends in clean living.
Ever wondered about the inner working of a zoo? See the surprisingly heart-warming relationship between these elephants and their keepers, and the literal ton of poo they have to deal with every day using recycling and green waste management techniques.

What beautiful creatures these Elephants are .I respect all animals and I can see that these are well cared for by these fine young people . 👍🐘
It appears to me that the elephants enjoy to be hosed down - even the baby!
Them elephants look like royalty...putting their feet up to be washed...they seem to love it..
The guy picks up the elephant poo, checks it out than comments that his family complains about the smell 😂
Said like a true animal lover = "its a privilege to work with the animals so we don't mind picking up the poo every now and again" :D...
I'd shovel ANY type of poo to be near these beautiful animals
bethoneybee even human shit

I think your doing a fabulous job!! I love these magnificent 😍👌 beasts. You really are lucky to work with the elephants. Peace and luv from Canada 👋💙❤️
So are we not going to talk about the elephant in the room? He picked elephant's poop with his bare hands!
It's made up of plant material and hay. Carnivore poop would need to be handled with gloves.
Who else thought there was blood in the poo, but then it turned out to be a red light....?
It was blood
Blood wont stay red, it will turn dark brown and black over time.
@10samm10 True also, your profile picture is a little bit scary, lol.
@ 5:42 The little baby elephant lifting its little foot to be washed is so adorable. 😍🥰❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🐘🐘
2:09 "A real nice round poo" You'd think that shit was a doughnut the way he was eyeing it n breaking it up 🤢🤣
But why are they holding bull hooks? They claim to care about the elephants yet use torture devices on them?
Safety reasons, plus the elephants have now moved to Blackpool Zoo (when they completed their new enclosure 5 years ago) and live in a bigger and better enclosure, with the opportunity to breed, and are managed in protected contact instead of free (as seen here). Your concern is completely understandable but thankfully things like that are now a thing of the past- you would struggle to find them still part of the routine of any UK elephants.
What wonderful people you are!!! Taking care of these gentle giants I feel is left to loving people. I am so glad they have you Angels on earth. I am OCD I wish I could help. God bless you and the Elephants! 🐘🐘🐘💙🙏🏻😇💙🙏🏻😇💙🙏🏻😇🐘
Your man would be lovely looking if he got his hair cut and styled. Sorry, I think I I've missed the whole point of the video 😳
why...why is he touching the dung with his bare hands?
Gotta feel shit
Cause its just hay and fruit and veg x
Yikes!!! Exactly. 🤮🤮
Keri Hayes its literally just hay and fruit.. not that smelly and is dry to the touch.. its not like dog shit.
Survival people squeeze the water out of it and drink it
that zoo keeper tho 🤩
Yes, I can just see their Resume: I shovel poo, how about you?
why are they chained tho ..
U guys r so good at ur job welldone! X
The zoo keeper was 🔥
Imagine the compost yields
It's uncanny how interesting elephant dung becomes when you have a garden on naturally poor soil.
Great job
"Twycross in the East Midlands"
Me "Technically it a bit fucked up... Not really in the East Midlands"... It has a Coventry postcode of CV, a Hinckley phone number but is located nearer to Atherstone in Warwickshire then Hinckley basically just outside of Nuneaton... Its one of them weird locations...
bull hooks, chains, and concrete floors, i pray this video is 30+ years old and things have changed
I want this job
How are they not wearing any masks with all the poop dusk flying around 🤔
Why do the elephants have chains on?
FailGirlGamer It is just to keep them in one place while being cleaned so the process is quicker otherwise the elephants would be walking around while the staff trying to clean them and it makes it easier to check them for any health concerns if they standing in one place rather than walking around
This is why we do it at my work but as soon as they have been cleaned the chains come off and they are free to do what they want
Basically it is just to make the cleaning process and health check process more pleasant and quicker for everyone including the elephants
@@dynastytaylor8003 do you need to go to college to do that work at a zoo
Dynasty Taylor exactly it’s like tying horses while grooming them or tying a dog on the grooming table
So biutifull
Elephants would be better off free, in their own environment... but of course then we have poachers and such scum.
4:45 those ear piercings look awful. It looks like she has ticks.
