YIKES! No idea how a futz up the Smallville part so bad. Big mistake saying it came out in 2006, when it was in fact 2001. Major oversight on my behalf! Hope the rest of the video was okay - spent a lot of time with this one 😣

It's an easy mistake to make with so much history, dates, season numbers, comic issues, etc, with over 80 years of history and lore. It in no way made the video any less enjoyable or in depth. Official DC documentaries make worst mistakes (e.g. Kevin Smith spouting inaccurate Batgirl facts). You can tell a lot of work and love went into it. 🙂

It's okay, Dave - it's tough to summarize 83+ years of a character that's been in varied media. At first I thought it was only going to focus on the animated aspect, but you pretty much covered it all! 👍 wow

@@ShakaHapa I love the MCU, but yeah there are a lot of people who like it just because it’s the “in thing” and a lot of people who claim to like DC just because they think it’s more serious and edgy than Marvel (it’s not, but Zach Snyder seems to think it is). Me personally, I like the comics and characters, but it can be a bit annoying to meet someone who claims to be a “huge Spider-Man or Superman fan” but knows nothing about them outside of the movies.

@ImpishDCrealm Wow it’s sad how your calling other people “kids” when your the one acting like a child. Also the only way people will think DC is all around edgey is if they’ve only read the New 52 and modern Batman or if they have Snyder hadrons. DC has usually been more idealistic and hopeful than Marvel. People only think DCs edgey because WB has started trying to turn every character into Batman. Either way being edgey is almost always a bad thing in my book. I love DC but this dumb edgey New 52/Dark Knight returns aesthetic has to stop. It betrays the characters and is just plain cringe.

    • @thedukeofchutney468
      @thedukeofchutney468 3 года назад +3

@ImpishDCrealm My dyslexia aside; (which is a red herring fallacy) the New 52 is still cannon. It was never wiped out of cannon in either Doomsday Clock (great story) or Dark Knights Metal (terrible story). If anything DC has lately been eschewing the idea of “cannon” all together.

For me, the Fleischer cartoons are the epitome of what Superman is and can do. No godlike powers, but strong enough to lift a car and stop an airplane with great effort. Chris Reeve looked like the best live representation of the character and George Reeves was the best Clark Kent. He was also the most athletic, lifting up bad guys by the collar, running fast, leaping and fighting (he was a boxer in his younger years). All the later Supermen relied on special effects to do those things.

I remember the days in my kindergarten had me make one of my first paper figurines of the guy and of course even costumed as him in Halloween at least once or twice. XD

I tell you what: I used to be regrettably annoying back then though... Now while I can be laid back, I'm very reserved and cordial at least outside of the virtual scape anyways. Sometimes I can get hot under the collar of life, yes, but at my core I can be more introspectively respectful then first glances would tell.
Hopefully you come off more introspective too, I mean... That IS what Superman should have taught you too, for however hard it can be. I used to draw the guy and be obsessed with him as a kid too... Even if I am not as huge of a fan now, I still look fondly and he has my respect's too (alongside Batman, Spiderman, Grasshopper Man, He-Man, etc. etc.)
If whatever I said in my posts came off as a smidgen disrespectful to you or anyone, then I apologize as this is not normally my attention, I can be very blunt or unorthodox at times too.

Wow, I had no idea Superman had so many iterations. No wonder it took an hour to get through them all! I found the early history especially fascinating. Weird to look back and imagine a time when Superman was a brand new character. It feels like he's existed forever. Very interesting that it took the creators so long to land on the right concept to make him a success. It made me think of the old writing advice, "Don't fall in love with your first idea." Part of creativity is being flexible, and the creation of Superman was clearly an example of that. Thanks for another great video!

In a way, The Death of Superman was the biggest and most prolific death of a fictional character since Sherlock Holmes' fateful encounter with Professor Moriarty at Reinbach Falls.
I grew up reading different eras of Superman but my favorite is the underrated Bronze Age era especially written by Elliot S! Maggin who in my opinion written the best comic Superman and the best comic Lex Luthor, him writing and Curt Swan on art were a criminally underrated comic creative team that doesn't get much love from comic fans.
Maggin also written two great Superman novels, Last Son of Krypton and Miracle Monday, which have audiobook version read by Maggin on his Elliot Makes Stuff Up podcast for free. He also written two short stories, about Krypto the Superdog and one which is his take on a "final" Pre-Crisis Superman story called An Enemy's Gift aka. Luthor's Gift.

This was amazing! I grew up watching the old superman shorts from the 40s and Superman: the Animated Series from the 90s. I loved it sooo much! Same for Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Those were the coolest shows to watch in my childhood. I also watched Young Justice as a kid, and have always loved the animation of DC's animated universe. The DC Superhero Girls 2019 version of superman is probably my least favorite, because they made him (and Bruce Wayne) more of a self-centered jerk. But I'm glad to finally know what DC means. And my mom loves the live-action Wonder Woman. And we would watch the 1970s Superman movies.. So yeah, Superman was a big part of my life. Thanks Dave.

It seems as if the more they try to make Superman "grittier and more grounded" the more distorted the character becomes. He's supposed to be an ideal - the perfect hero, sent from Krypton to help the Human race to become better. Supposedly, Snyder was going to get his version of Superman to this point by the 4th film, but since those films will never be made, we have a pretty brutal and un-heroic Superman on the Silver Screen now. I'm afraid of what they will do to the character next.
Great job on this detailed and fabulous history of the character! You unearthed some obscure gems, like the Torchy Blane connection. Thanks for sharing all of this information.

The ideal perfect hero seems to have appeared in the Donner movies and the 80’s comics where the Superman in the golden age and silver age shown him more aggressive and reckless even sometimes a jerk like anyone else. Snyder based his movie interpretation on the golden age Superman for man of steel and new 52 origin has some modern version aspects of golden age like fighting social issues.

@@Kal-El207 the silver age literally has Clark adopt Jimmy Olsen just to make his life miserable for a reason to why he can’t have jimmy around all the time, causality gaslight and emotionally abuse Lois to keep her away from him as Superman, literally held a glass of water mocking aquaman in the middle of the desert, etc… golden age era Superman is more heroic than silver age yeah, but he literally had a “war against cars” just for road safety, destroyed ruin down housing so that they would have to build a new more up to code for the citizens of the area, he was more reckless and more of a chaotic good (the best kind of heroic good).

My only suggestion other than that would be that if you had covered everything in strict order it would have been more clear to viewers when one thing had led to another (for example the New 52 version ditching his red trunks led to him losing them in the Man of Steel movie. Or the Death of Superman coming out of the delayed wedding on the Lois & Clark show.)

I remember, back in the late '70s-early '80s, going to the library and I found a big book of all Superman comics in it. I don't remember when it was published, but I really liked that book. Checked it out many many times. We (including cousins too) had a box of comics out at grandpa's farm house to help keep us kids entertained. We didn't have extra money & we got what we got, so the continuation of his story line became muddled....a lot...lol. It marked the time in my life that comics meant less and less to me. Don't get me wrong, I still like comics & a really good story...lol. Just could not afford to catch up on it. I never got into the TV shows...don't know why. Superman I, II, III, I liked & that new one, Man of Steel, was good too (had no $$ at the time so I had to wait & rent it...lol). Now can just barely afford the internet...so no movies unless it's on Netflix (only have that thanks to my daughter...she's to good to me)...I guess I really don't need it.
With all that said.....Thank you for making this video....it helped to put somethings in place for me....Thanks again!
I hope everyone will have a great day & please be safe. :)

Fascinating however there is at least one mistake in what you reported, the mistake in no way took away from the video and I only mentioned it because it had a bearing on the show in question. That being "Smallville" you quoted the start of the series as being 2006 this is not correct Smallville started in 2001, this detail is important because they used (sort of) the events of 9-11 to explain the Whitney Fordman character's departure after actor Eric Johnson began getting death threats for keeping Clark and Lana apart. They wrote it in that Whitney decided to join the military after graduating in response to the World Trade Center attack.

In the comics, Superman, then Superboy, met Lex BEFORE moving to Metropolis. When a piece of Kryptonite fell to Earth in Smallville while Superboy was playing in the field outside the Kent farm, Lex used a bulldozer to remove it, thus saving his (Superboy's) life. In return, Superboy helped Lex build his first lab, after which he (Lex) vowed to find a way to make his new friend immune to Kryptonite. However, while he was working on doing this, there was an explosion in his lab. Superboy saw the smoke but instead of first using his x-ray vision to make sure that Lex had managed to escape, he (Superboy) simply blew the smoke back into the lab which only made things worse by most likely causing Lex to lose his hair. After that, Lex vowed that he would find a way to kill Superboy.
