- CARTOON EVOLUTION #30 / POP CULTURE EVOLUTION #3 - BATMAN
First debuting in 1939, Batman immediately took the world by storm, blending the action-adventure of early detective Pulps, with the super heroic exploits of DC’s sensational Superman. Soon becoming one of DC’s coolest and most beloved heroes, Batman has appeared in thousands of comics and been depicted in more media than any other DC character. In this video, we’ll trace the inception and creation of the Dark Knight, spotlighting his impact on pop culture through comics, movies, series and extended media over more than 80 years. Spotlighting his various on-screen performances by the likes of Robert Pattinson, Ben Affleck, Christian Bale, David Mazouz, George Clooney, Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, Adam West, Lewis G. Wilson, Robert Lowery - and those who've voiced him in cartoons, including Kevin Conroy, Diedrich Bader, Bruce Greenwood, Roger Craig Smith, Jason O'Mara, Rino Romano, Ben McKenzie, Jensen Ackles, Peter Weller, David Giuntoli, and many, many more.

How interesting that several actors who auditioned for Batman but didn’t get the part would later play him in later productions.
I bet they all were extremely excited when they had their chance and spotlight as the bat
@@DktaJ2021 I honestly didn’t know that Keanu Reeves auditioned for Batman in Forever to replace Keaton before Kilmer got the part, and now nearly three decades later, he’s voicing Batman in a new animated film! Funny how life works sometimes.
it's the same with james bond. Moore, Dalton and Brosnan were all set to play 007 way before they actually did it.
@Javier Servigon true. Roger Moore was Ian Fleming's original choice for Dr. No, but Cubby Broccoli saw something more in Sean Connery. He was considered to replace Connery in OHMSS, but was already committed to The Saint. Timothy Dalton auditioned for Live and Let Die, but was thought to be too young. Pierce Brosnan was considered for The Living Daylights, but like Moore he had already committed to Remington Steele

Can't imagine how difficult this was to put together. So comprehensive and fascinating- this is the penultimate Batman history overview!
I am vengeance. I am the night. I AM BATMAN!!!
We can thank Tiny Toon Adventures (and by extension Who Framed Roger Rabbit as that got the ball rolling for Tiny Toons’ creation) for having Batman: The Animated Series.
Once again, we can say thank you to Steven Spielberg for creating our childhoof
Favorite Batman film: The Dark Knight
Favorite Batman: Robert Pattinson
Favorite Bruce Wayne: Christian Bale

Bill Finger did more for the character than Bob Kane ever did
Sadly Bob had to be the regrettable face for Batman, but Bill Finger will now get the recognition he deserves for making Batman what he is today!
I saw one person put it quite well. “Bob Kane invented Batman, Bill Finger invented everything you like about Batman”
Dont forgrt to give some credit to Jery Robinson!
Not to take away from anything he did, but its like how Stan Lee overshadowed Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby to such an extent that non comic book fans give him credit for things he had nothing to do with
@@LowellLucasJr. It took entirely too long. I wish these companies would stop screwing their employees.
Bill's life was filled with disappointment and loneliness. Poor guy, he should have had the praise (and money) that came with the character.
As an '80s kid I vividly remember the controversy over Batman Returns. My mom wouldn't let me go see it as she'd heard it was too violent and "adult". Joke's on her, I saw it at a friend's birthday party anyway. :)

1:40 Surprisingly, the world's first superhero was actually a Japanese character called Golden Bat who first appeared in 1931, predating Superman by 7 years.
Thanks for the reminder I forgot he’s name.
If you think about it Hercules is the first superhero.
And The Shadow predates him, so no he wasn't actually the worlds first superhero.
One could argue Popeye was the first superpowered comic book character debuting in 1929
@@Pdalow I'd argue Shadow was the last pulp hero, eventually turning into a superhero years after Golden Bat debuted.
Can you do Sonic the Hedgehog evolution video, a Super Mario bros evolution video, or a Kirby evolution video too please? I love your videos by the way.❤️
He confirmed Mario and Sonic for this year
Sonic will be getting his own Evolution most likely in April and Mario in December. To coincide with the release of their upcoming theatrical films.
Next howard the duck evolution please (if the history is long).
Gonna just use this as a chance to gush about how fucking awesome Batman Beyond was. That show is such a perfect continuation to the Batman Animated universe, Terry McGuinness is actually a pretty awesome batman, and i also just love the concept of a Cyberpunk take on the Batman universe.
I desperately want a Batman Beyond movie set in the Batman '89 universe that hybridizes the aesthetics of Burton's Batman and Blade Runner, i really think that could work, especially with a good Director/Cinematographer combo.
I’ve heard rumors of a potential Batman Beyond live-action movie with Burton and Keaton involved. I really hope that becomes a reality!
You beat me to commenting about Batman beyond, it was the first Batman anything I ever saw as a kid and I’ve always loved it, I know that in reality Bruce Wayne IS the Batman but for me it will always be terry.
@@benmalsky9834 That's the Batman I could see Robert Pattinson playing. I haven't seen the movie yet and it may be phenomenal, but seeing Pattinson as Bruce Wayne just doesn't look right.
@@Krendall2 Trust me, he’s really good.
My hands down favorite scenes from Batman Beyond are either the reveal that Bane was old and withered after overdosing on Venom, or Jokers death from the movie
My personal favorite actor who portrayed Batman was none other than Adam West.He was the very first actor that I had seen playing the Caped Crusader in a television series that had come out during the 1960s.West also played the hero with the very best acting that really brought the character to life.Him and actor Burt Ward(Robin)”Zapped”and”Kayoed”into our television sets with the most classic series of the Dynamic Duo.Even the crafty villains such as the Joker(Cesar Romero),the Penguin(Burgess Meredith),the Riddler(Frank Gorshin and John Astin)and the Catwoman(Julie Newmar,Lee Ann Meriwether and Aretha Kitt) made the series both a success and cult favorite. This is one”Dark Knight”that will be cherished forever…Same Bat Time…Same Bat Channel!!!…Karl Schumaker 🦇
One day, there will be a live action Batdad.
Interesting fact: Batman creators Bob Kane & Bill Finger actually plagiarized from The Shadow to build the first Batman story.
In 1936, three years before Batman flew onto the scene, the story "Partners of Peril" was released in The Shadow magazine.
The plot involves a group of four business partners who each have a stake in a chemical company.
One of them gets greedy & begins killing the other partners so he'll be the sole owner. He kills the first two & kidnaps the third & locks him in a gas chamber.
All of this happens in Batman's first story, "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate".
In addition to completely stealing the plot, Bob & Bill also drew the gas chamber, some gauges, & a rooftop with a brick chimney exactly how they looked in the Shadow story.
Something else awfully suspect is that in the Shadow story in question, the Shadow himself is described as being a "bat-like figure" no less than *SEVEN TIMES* throughout the story.
Reportedly, in other Shadow stories (or story), he is referred to as "the knight of darkness", & probably the biggest head-scratcher of all, in one Shadow story, the villain is called "the Joker" & wears _clown makeup._
I've been a Batman fan since I was five years old, so when I found this out, I was initially shocked, but then I found out that DC would eventually go on to canonize the Shadow in the pre-Crisis timeline, including a story where the Shadow & Batman meet, & Batman cites the Shadow as his biggest inspiration for getting into crime-fighting & the two shake hands, & a flashback story where young Bruce Wayne (before that fateful night) witnesses the Shadow foil a bank robbery.
I will always be a Batman fan, but once I found this out, I knew I had to check out the hero from which Batman was inadvertently born, & it has been worth it.
If you're a true bat-fan yourself, I highly encourage & recommend you go check out the Shadow, whether it be his original pulp magazines, his popular radio show, or the several films he's appeared in over the years.
He is after all the unofficial official Bat-Father. 😁
Batman may have taken inspiration & influence from the likes of Zorro & Sherlock Holmes ( both of which are also classics), but the most direct & ingrained source is most definitely the Shadow.
We still never had a Batman & Robin/Blue-Falcon and Dynomutt crossover movie.
How awesome would that be?
You can almost imagine how that would totally turn out for most DC/Hanna-Barbera fans (like me).
That would be nice
@@benmalsky9834 I agree
Batfleck should be the star.
@@Luke-3281 Who?
@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941 Wonder woman should make a cameo in this project! 😄
It always surprised me how underrated and unknown The Batman from the mid 2000s was and still is. It had some great moments and I loved how the series built up its universe over time.
I'm so impressed you've touched on so many of the Dark Knights appearances in other media! It could've just been from comics to movies...but oh no! You made sure to include the animated series, games, animated films and more! To that, I thank you 100% for your hard word!
RIP
Kevin Conroy.
Have you done Marvel’s Wolverine? Please do that evolution next!!!
One correction: Beware the Batman wasn't cancelled by bad reception, but because Mattel did not want to make a toyline for it. Toylines are how a lot of action cartoons get funded, so without toys, there was no reason to renew the show. The early 2010s actually saw a lot of action cartoon cancellations that way, and Beware was no exception.
I gotta say the Adam west 60s show still looks stunning good to watch this day! It’s held up really well overall although the overall quality definitely lacked a bit in season 3 and the single based episode storylines instead of the usual 2-part structure which I missed.
S3 definitely was a step down in quality, budget and stories.
@@ajclements4627 It was also the shorter of the three TV seasons.
The Creative Rate on that show must have been exhausting. Everyone in the production just worked so hard On Theme, it must have been agonizing to maintain.
To hear Adam West discuss The Theatre of The Absurd is pure gold
The 1989 Batman Movie with Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Kim Basinger as Vickie Vale and Jack Nicholson as Jack Napier/Joker, the 1968 Batman Episode featured Milton Berle as Louie the Lilac as a Villainous Florist and Featured Yvonne Craig as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.
Well done Dave, another incredible Evolution video for one of my most favorite characters!
Thank you, Ben! 🙏🏻
@@DaveLeeDownUnder You’re welcome
@@DaveLeeDownUnder can you do evolution of godzilla 1954 to 2022 68 years to now
Batman The Animated Series and Batman Mask of the Phantasm are my favorites. Kevin Conroy's voice is what I always think of when I think of Batman.
I would say that the Dark Knight is still my favorite Batman film, but Robert Pattinson is now my favorite on screen Batman. I also love 1989s Batman as well.
Seeing Batman becoming more popular than Superman sure does says something about our society.
Man, can you imagine comics without Batman or Spiderman? Sheesh...what a scary world it would be!
I love Batman. The late 1970's Saturday morning and the original Superfriends shows were my introductions to the character. The 1960's live action TV series was corny but as a kid watching it, I loved it. The fight scenes were my favorite part. 1992's The Animated Series is my favorite Batman production ever and is in a class of its own.
Bro Dave your so underrated to be honest but like”really” underrated
You deserve more than a million subs
Been looking forward to this one Mate 😁🐒 I know this had to of taken you Forever!
Thanks, Jeff!!
Amazing video....but you forgot TELLTALE'S BATMAN which featured a very refreshing and acclaimed alternate take on Batman!
I admit to still having a place in my heart for the 1966 live action series, and the 1968 Filmation cartoons.
I've absolutely been waiting for this video!! Thanks
I missed the Saturday morning Batman cartoons as I was watching the Beatles cartoons instead. Then it was New York Yankees baseball in the afternoon. I did collect some Batman comic books in 1966 and 1967. DC Comic books had a show at PS11 on 21st street. It was in August 1966. It was in the Chelseaneighborhood in Manhattan in New York City. I remember buying comic books for 5 cents each. It was before I was in first grade. Those were the days.
It's funny.
My favorite Batman, my favorite Bruce Wayne, my favorite overall Batman film...none of them are the same 😂.
Thank you for putting this together. Batman is virtually an archetype of mine at this point. This was an excellent document of his legacy thus far re: 2022.
This was so entertaining. My mom grew up on the 1960s Batman series, and she always liked how it taught valuable lessons. I loved the Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman and Batman Beyond. I watched them all throughout my childhood. I also watched Superman: The Animated Series and Static Shock. I found it interesting how the Batman franchise would either be criticized for being too violent and inappropriate, or too corny and humorous. I haven't watched the latest movie, but I've heard great things about it.
I knew I was going to enjoy this. And I did. Holy koalas, Dave man! That was Bat-tastic! For what it's worth I still consider "The Dark Knight" to be the best Batman movie, although I wish Christian Bale hadn't done that voice. I'm still eager to see more Pop Culture Evolution videos, Dave. I hope many more of your viewers are too.
Thanks heaps, Simon! Glad you enjoyed it!!
@@DaveLeeDownUnder did u know there's a chipmunk version of Batman called "Batmunk" of Alvin and the chipmunks starring Alvin as the Jokester, Simon as Brice Wayne/Batmunk & Theodore as Happy Pennyworth in the season 8 of Alvin And The Chipmunks Go To The Movies
omg they´ve considered Bill Murray for the leading role in the 1989 Batman .... he´d make the Joker laugh to death instead of freightening him ...
There are a countless number of Batman films and television.
I appreciate how much work behind the scenes takes when making the Batman evolution video. I bet it takes Dave a month to make it, this is why Dave only makes a cartoon/pop culture evolution video a month.
I absolutely love the "Dark knight returns parts 1 and 2. My favourite portrayal of Batman is Michael Keaton, but my favourite Batman film is "The Dark Knight" due to it's great storytelling, and incredible performance from Heath Ledger as the Joker. I've very recently watched the very dark "The Killing Joke" which I mostly enjoyed, with Mark Hamill as always giving a fantastic performance as the voice of the Joker.
I will always stand by Adam West as the best performance as Batman. Every line delivery is pure gold
I listened to a Batman short from the 60th Anniversary of Batman, where Batman is portrayed as being 60. It was a comedic take, full of geriatric jokes, such as the Batmobile was out of action due to being unable to source the fins, and Alfred reminding him to take his bus pass with him on his way out.
One of the jokes was that the Riddler had kidnapped the mayor, but when Batman catches up with him and asked him why, it turns out that he had forgotten due to dementia. "Did I? I have no idea..."
Nice video
Bill Finger is the True Creator of Batman that Deserve more Love
I AM BATMAN
My favorite Batman animated projects:
1. Batman: TAS
2. Batman: Mask Of The Phantasam
3. Batman: Under The Red Hood
4. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
5. Batman: Year One
Great job on exploring every inch of Batman lore throughout the years. After seeing just how much media Batman has been in over the years it’s wild to me that I’ve seen almost every movie/ tv series featuring Batman lol.
Really nice rundown, well done.
Dave lee fun fact the actress who played Catwoman in the (2022) Batman movie is the same actress that played Catwoman in the Lego Batman movie 😁👍
Batman always will be one of my favorite superheroes 🦇.
Great video Dave and take care and stay safe 👍.
Fantastic cartoon evolution video as always!
Subscribed. When I first read the title of this vid, I looked at the runtime & thought: Yeah, right. A thorough summation of Batman's history in animation in a 40 something min vid? This was even more than that. It was a broader reflection of all Batman lure since the character's introduction...& indeed, managed to be compelling & informative despite how relatively short it is. Bravo! Very impressed.
Damn! That was so good! Beautifulluy researched and a bit cheeky, too! Nicely done!
Beware the Batman wasn’t cancelled because of ratings, rather low toy sales which is an unfortunate large deciding factor for many animated series.
It straight up didn't have a kids toyline. They released a couple of collector items, but those don't really make a profit since they're aimed at fans and collectors.
Ben Affleck is my favorite and I'm glad he's coming back for more
Yes! I've been waiting for you to do a video on Batman!
Thank you so much for this evolution video! I just started rewatching the Adam West Batman series from the 1960s, and was wondering if there was any compiled information just like this. Brilliant 👏🏽!!!
this is a great video. thank you very much.
The Batman cartoon because the way he fight is very skillful and he is so indestructible he can take the incredible pain like facing Dracula and Bane.
Fantastic Evolution of the Dark Knight! May the world spread on your awesome coverage! Also, id like to mention that Tiny Toons had LOTS of appearances featuring the dark knight! Having Bruce Timm/ Paul Dini pushing their interested in the titular hero before getting the green light to produce the Emmy winning show!
Great video of The Batman!
Nice video Dave👍👍👍
Batman is one of my favourite DC heroes of all time and I grew up watching the animated series and batman beyond and I think my favourite batman movies are: batman forever,Batman Begins and the batman Thank you for up loading this video Dave Lee thank you very much👍👍👍👍👍
Very impressive job! Batman is my favorite superhero but even I learned a few things from this video. There were a hell of a lot of versions to cover and you managed to hit just about all of them. My favorite adaptation of Batman is Kevin Conroy on the Animated Series. For live action, my favorite was Christian Bale.
So, I was thinking. I would love to see the evolution of Sailor Moon. Things to highlight:
* The original manga look.
* The 90"s anime.
* The failed Toonmakers pilot.
* The Sera Myu musicals in Japan.
* The live action Sailor Moon show.
* Sailor Moon Crystal and the two Sailor Moon Eternal movies.
No mention of Under the Red Hood? Which was an animated classic. And Batman Forever was given better than mixed reviews here in the States. Aside from those misses, this was a great docu-vid. Can't wait for the new animated series in 2023.
I specifically mentioned Under the Red Hood by name, and played clips.
My favourite Batman actors are Michael Keaton, Kevin Conroy and Christian Bale and my favourite Batman Movie is The Dark Knight Rises.
Love your work Dave. Sad to see the end of the podcast. My favourite Batman is Adam West.
Dave Lee, I really liked your Batman video!
May I suggest a few fictional characters you can evolution videos on, both for Cartoon Evolution and Pop Culture Evolution?
1. Sherlock Holmes
2. Peter Pan
3.Wonder Woman
4. Dorothy Gale
5. Captain America
Do GARFIELD THE CAT CARTOON EVOLUTION
That would be really cool
Lest us Gamers not forget that the Batman Arkham series is considered some of the best Batman stories in the world
I will always consider Ben Affleck my Batman but I am quite fond of them all thank you for your insight it is highly appreciated
The Tim verse was my childhood and man what a time to be a kid it was thanks Bruce Tim
Rest In Peace Kevin Conroy
I think that Batman And Robin should'ne been a standalone film, the comedic nature and jokes would've done well on its own... maybe
Batman is my favorite DC Comics hero. Thanks for doing this video, Dave!
Thanks, Vincent! Glad you enjoyed it!!
It was Beetlejuice in '88 that got Burton the directing job for '89 Batman, not Pee Wee Herman from '85. It was also Beetlejuice that got Keaton the role as Batman since Burton liked working with him. Ivan Reitman was going to direct Batman as a dark comedy starring Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy before Tim was considered.
You Finally Did it
Holy pop culture evolution, Batman!😄
BTAS also saw the debut of one Baby Doll, and actor with a condition that keeps her young despite her being a adult woman. it was in the new series that one of Batman's dangerous foes, Firefly appeared he is a arsonist with bug based gimmick namely the firefly.

I can't wait to see a evolution video of sonic the hedgehog when sonic movie 2 hits theaters!❤🦇🙆♂️🥰🦹♂️
I would have to give most If not all the credit to bill finger . He created Batman’s iconic appearance and every character after.
I liked the old serials and were considered kid stuff back then but I had a DVD that had both serials but my favorite with Japanese bad guy whose henchmen had a car that changed colors.
This video got more views over one day than the James Bond Evolution video did in half a year. Awesome! Sad, but really good to see.
Great video! Would love to see one about Robin
This was a great video presentation👌🏿 Kevin Conroy, in my opinion, while we do the best portrayal of Batman. Mark Hamill will forever be the best betrayal of the joker.

The Dark Knight will forever be my favorite and I think is the best Batman film ever along with my favorite Batman actor Christian Bale
Always great to see more Batman content! My favorite is Batman Forever with Val Kilmer! I don't care who defies on this, it's still a fantastic movie for me! I also really the nineties and 2000s cartoons. Batman Beyond also deserves even more respect in my opinion! I love the story of Terry McGinnis!
