  • How to make common rafters with my simplified metric framing square is what I am demonstration in this video, I will measure and mark the common rafters ready to cut them
    I use my simplified metric framing square to show how to make common rafters
    First measure the span from the outside corner of the wall plates.
    Then set up the framing square to the correct angle for your rafters
    Add a fence for true accuracy every time
    Then work out the common rafter length in my case I use one of the calculators that is in my new APP
    Then add your soffit allowance or drop and proceed to cut all the common rafters

    another great video Robin, excellent content. Skilled and quality builders(craftsmen) like yourself and stu crompton are so hard to find now. Shoddy work is just considered normal and it gives some hope that guys like you are training new apprentices in how things should be done properly. 👏👏👏

    9:53 is there a reason why you don't have the saw resting on the beam when cutting it? Generally one would cut the other way around so the baseplate of the saw aligns with the top surface of the beam. Just curious.

    That's basically how I do it. A good video might be explaining how to get the length of hips if not done already and the angle. The way i do it is half the span of the building. Work out the span distance of hip which is 45° of half the span. Then take the plumb height from the common rafter above the wall plates. Put the figures in a trigonometry app on the phone. The angles length is all worked out. Far easier and safer than going up and down scaffold with bits of string and beval stocks

  • @spitNsawdust

    What’s the name of the app? I was hoping for an easier solution to using a pattern rafter and then marking again with the square, long rafters are a pain to keep running down both ends plus the weight of lifting the pattern rafter each time. Am I missing something?

    • @RobNorman08
      @RobNorman08 2 года назад

      If you rafters are all the same length, and you want to use a pattern rafter, you only need the patten from the eaves to the birds mouth, the app will only give you your basic rafter length from plumb cut down the rafter to the plumb cut of the birds mouth, just the same as any other rafter BRL calculation will.

      Yes although that looks like a dormer construction which is usually 4x2 walls filled in between uprights with kingspan ... on a 300mm wall ie block work, cavity , face brickwork the wall plate sits on the internal wall

      My app will allow to put in a height instead, generally if you are joining on an existing roof you can use a spirit level and framing square or an inclinometer then you can find the pitch that way, often our architects plans includes the pitch
