Excellent video as always robin, simplistic approach
Most men on site can only nail up a truss roof
Would add that had the workmen followed the sectional drawings they wouldn't have screwed up the wall plate level, which doesn't suit the steel frame
In Ireland most cut roofs have double wall plates, to stop twisting of larger joists and also to gain extra height in upstairs areas, as roof angle and width are fixed

I think the speed square is a a damn handy bit of kit, but I have yet to see anyone improve on the imperial steel square- it just works. Everyone is struggling with pythagoras rules and such- the steel square just has all the answers stamped on it.

My new square is complimented by an app that simplifies the process by computing the lengths of the members and other setting out procedures, removing the need for any complicated math of any sort, I also like the simplicity of a speed square but we are mainly metric here.

I dont think you can beat two sliding bevels and ready reckoner probably the most easiest way to cut a roof, you also dont need a level that works a angle out for you either, a simple spirit level vertical mark , and a bevel and protracter can determine ur plumb cut, from that you can calculate youre pitch and seat cut, and run of rafter

Roof Pitch Consultant. I would like a few jobs like that. Not much use in Qld unfortunately. Because I learnt using two bevels and a tape roofing squares still alien to me. Love watching someone that knows how to use one properly but would take me a while to learn. That is a weird roof design. Architect nightmare combined with over enthusiastic engineer leads to pile of pus. Why the flat bit more problems than its worth. With all that steel setting the parameters and as we used to say perfect pitch 45 not that hard to work out if you know what you are doing which they obviously don't. An interesting insight into the way the building is going in the UK.

All those interested in pitching roofs should purchase Goss' roof ready reckoner book 👍 and watch robins videos and it will all make sense. The step off method i believe if i understand Robin correctly is when we set our rise and run on our squares.Say our fence is set to 300mm run and 150mm rise. But our span is 1780mm.From the plumb/level intersection of our roofing square you can only measure in 300mm steps along the level plane down our rafter.so you would have 5x300mm steps getting you to 1500mm (stepping off) then your final measure along the level plane of you square would be 280mm to get your total step off of 1780mm.Fuck now im confused hope this helps someone haha
