Nathan should be your assistant on every job Robin, old school English builder using iPhone apps is so entertaining. Please let him do the working out of the hips and jacks on the app. Get the ridge up then it time for a cuppa 🤣🤣
I agree, robin your a true master craftsman, not only are you the best I’ve ever seen , your calm persona to teach and never get ruffled is an asset on its own , you always take time and make tradesman feel so confident and comfortable. Mate I would love to do a day on site with you to learn absolutely anything! 😂 well done matey. ❤️, maybe do a 1 day workshop a month at a fee , I’m there !
Forty years ago I worked on roofs, and nearly got killed or injured when I was an apprentice. Slipped on frosty sarking and straight off the roof, lucky scaffold was there. Preperation as with most things is key. I liked your plywood pad on top of the ridge Robin not seen that before, great idea.
You’ve made me feel confident that I could tackle my own roof as a DIYer. I followed your instructions on fitting a Velux and that went perfectly so as a non trades person with some basic skills, you make everything so easy to follow.
You would make an excellent teacher Robin. The perfect attitude to make people feel at ease👍. Thanks for all your excellent videos,I’ve learned so much from watching you mate👍
I'm in the same boat as Nathan, chippy for 24 years, but not much experience, mostly interior work. I knew the theory but never had the opportunity to put it to practice. You make it look so easy.
Your channel must be very popular in Australia.. you work like an Aussie chippy.. I know I've lived there.. it's a pleasure to work in that way.. cheers.
I remember the old ready reckoner books we had to have at college. Really helpful. Wish I had learnt more about roofing as an apprentice nearly 40 years ago. Haven’t done any carpentry for 25 years or more. 👍
I think everything has been said about your work. Sharing your knowledge is the greatest gift you have i being a muslim i prey for your good health people like are blessed for reason you don't know how you are teaching people to become good carpenters even at my age i am 73years old and am still working and very busy with work
Great work nice to see you working with your mate👍love how you didnt over edit the video robin and felt exactly like it does in reality. Was if we the viewer were stood on the scaffold spectating👍
Really interesting to watch an expert at work. Even though this is something I will never do myself, it is really good to get an appreciation of a job done well. If I ever need to have a new roof constructed, this gives some insight into what to look for in a design. Do you work with a structural engineer to design the roofs you build?
I would always set a combination square to the margin, and calculate using trig then minus half the ridge . Or use the stepping off method to find the length. 19:36
I'm not a professional but I'm very interested in the process. How did you decide where to make the foot cut on the rafters - it seems to be the one thing you didn't explain.
Top class as always and layed out simple its like you say sometimes we can work ourselves into a tizzie of anxiety over the end product instead of taking it one simple step at a time would love to see a video if you ever come across a valley running vrite through the middle of a chimney dont know why people do them but they do a recipe for a leak but hey its easy draw it on a piece of paper
Your videos are very enjoyable as always. I have learnt a lot from you. Much appreciated that you showed us your skills. One thing I would like to ask, what’s the exactly name of the app you used. Thanks 😊
The span is 4340 which you half and is the centre of your 2 rafters going upto ridge. How would it be marked out of the ridge was 100mm etc ? Thanks Robin 👍🏻
Great stuff Robin but would any decent Chippie be able to sort something that simple out. We’ve moved from using a roofing square then a ready reckoner now one of the many apps but it was still good to show the basics
Brilliant video. I'm so keen to learn this as I'm very interested in roofing and carpentry in general. This has given me a tiny bit of confidence to start practicing.
another class vid there. roofs used to completely do my head in to be honest. its a shame i hardly ever get to do them as ive learned so much even just from watching your vids for the last 4 or so years (found your channel during covid lockdowns) id love to actually tackle more of them now. beats fitting kitchens and doors hands down
Hi Paul, thanks for your message, I also prefer building roof structures as opposed to kitchen and fitting doors!!!! thanks for finding and watching my channel, I really like the fact that professional trades like you enjoy my content!!
Hi Robin. This roofing series is just what Ive been looking for as I have a roof to build onto my out building. Where can I download your app for calculating roof rafter lengths etc? I have watched a lot of your videos over the years, but for some reason never subscribed. Now locked in for all future videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. All the very best.👍👍👍
Robin, i have often wondered would it work if you offset the rafter tops by a timber width such that you could then get fixings straight through the ridge into the rafter plumb cut rather than skew nailing. perhaps it might put to much strain on the ridge board, i dont know. i know the usual way has been done for years but this offset idea crossed my brain and i wondered? Anyway you are the man who will know.
It's for strength reasons so the opposite common rafter is pushing back forming a triangle if it was offset technically it could buckle the ridge over time hope this helps 🔨 0:01
Robin, is the app available? Great watching your videos. I’m a joiner and the extent of my roof construction is a potting shed. I have learned so much from watching your channel! Many thanks!
robin how can i get your web calculator would be so helpful im an old joiner made up most of my roofs insitu over the years and with my adjustable stanley roofing square
So simple and yet so perfect. I thought about an editing strategy for the videos to improve. Perhaps when explaining what is going to be built in the video, use some of the end result footage alongside the description. Just so us newbie DIYers can see what it should look like so we can visualise the end product as we are being taught the method. Hope that makes sense. Of course we could go to the end and see it But for the content quality, I think it will look mint that way. Even more professional in regards to tuition
Robin is the consummate professional and an excellent teacher.
As the saying goes, you're never too old to learn.
Nathan should be your assistant on every job Robin, old school English builder using iPhone apps is so entertaining. Please let him do the working out of the hips and jacks on the app. Get the ridge up then it time for a cuppa 🤣🤣
you're a bloody genius Robin. what a pleasure to see you working with your pal Nathan. just such a joy
its great to work alongside such a great mate!!

Englands greatest chippy, a joy to watch.
Robin ain't bad either.
The trick with the saw cut to hold the end of the tape is very good. Great Video!
You're a genius Robin. Love that you share your expertise so freely.
Sharing knowledge is a gift we all have, thank you for your comment

Awesome square!!! Let me buy the first one available! Transparent blade is perfect!!!
You’ve made me feel confident that I could tackle my own roof as a DIYer. I followed your instructions on fitting a Velux and that went perfectly so as a non trades person with some basic skills, you make everything so easy to follow.
Glad I could help!
I hope the square will be launching soon available to purchase great invention and guidance appreciated
Every video I’ve ever watched of yours Robin. has been quality you are a true professional without being all for yourself thanks
Great tutorial Robin. Easy to understand. 👍👍
I really like the voice over, Robyn - the format works well!
Many thanks for your feedback
You would make an excellent teacher Robin. The perfect attitude to make people feel at ease👍. Thanks for all your excellent videos,I’ve learned so much from watching you mate👍
Nice to watch some good old carpentry again. Thanks Robin and Nathan.

As a freshly qualified Chippy this video is brilliant as I’m not experienced in roof construction, more of these Rob!
lol at 13:20 "you tryina catch me out!" --- he is such a unit even if he got it wrong I'd take the blame that mine was wrong :D
You are a great teacher!
Loved watching the maths on this and it all fits together beautifully
Thank you!
Hi Robin, any update on the roofing square release?

I assume us DIYers should check the first 2 work before cutting the rest?
Great work nice to see you working with your mate👍love how you didnt over edit the video robin and felt exactly like it does in reality. Was if we the viewer were stood on the scaffold spectating👍
Glad you enjoyed it
That's how I got taught over 25 years ago when I did my advanced craft .

Probably the best how 2 roofing series 😊
Thank you Shaun!! Next episode on Thursday

Absolutely Fantastic! Exactly what i needed!
Good to watch robin😊😊
Where is the roofing square from? I see it has your motif on it and I like the clear fence.
Excellent video Robin 👏

Seeing that Time-Lapse - cutting out those rafters - reminded Me HOW we used to 'have' to work to make good money back in the 70's 🤠
So true!
Jack of all trades… master of the rafter
Amazing video as always Robin 💪🏼
(half span)÷cos(pitch) will give you the rafter length, i usually step off the ridge thickness but you can take it off the half span
Love your work Robin!!! Hello from Australia
Ron from USA, would love to see one of those carpenter squares in my tool box........any date available yet?
Your videos are very enjoyable as always. I have learnt a lot from you. Much appreciated that you showed us your skills. One thing I would like to ask, what’s the exactly name of the app you used. Thanks 😊

About ready for some new jeans robin 😂 cracking work, on of best channels on RUclips
Yep new jeans time!!! thanks for your comment mate
@@ukconstruction no problem is your app available to download mate
Do you have to add the 2/3 of the birds mouth so in this case 100mm to the rafter length?
Robin, is the app available? Great watching your videos. I’m a joiner and the extent of my roof construction is a potting shed. I have learned so much from watching your channel! Many thanks!

Thank you for your suggestion it makes lots of sense, I will try to do that in the future
A short run like that, I would have just skipped the joists preferring a collar tie higher to make a vault ceiling for more height.
Great video, a little gas at 11:57?
Whats the app called?
Brilliant video 👍 Need one of those squares
Thanks 👍
Great video Robin. When will you be selling these roofing square and clamp? Been wait to buy one for a while :)
Also, will you be launching the app?
I would buy one of those squares 👍
We only have posh rafters on our sites, non of that common muck ! :p
Brilliant chaps and easy to follow. I just have one question, how did you work out that it is a 37.5 degree pitch?
It was in the last video I think.
How would someone go about getting access to your roofing app?
