When I was a kid, I saw one of these at my local park grabbing water from the pond. It was a Huey. The pilot even waved at me smiling as he was grabbing water. They took so much, the pond's water level dropped by half a foot. This was in Auburn California btw :)
Bambi came from the movie Bambi, as bambi was try to walk on ice she fell flat. The original bucket was constructed to lay flat like bambi. Thus the name. Pilots start ed calling over the radio to get bambi ready to the crews back at base as it was a short easy name to remember. Ex-fire helicopter Pilot trivia.
why doesn't California (and every other state with a chronic wildfire problem) maintain a fleet of helicopters with this bambi bucket? They could, for example, have a fleet size of 20 copters and keep them on alert every fire season. As soon as a problem fire is spotted, these helicopters would start making round trips between the fire and the nearest body of water. Assuming a 1 hour round-trip and fleet size of 20, you'd get a drop every 3 minutes. No fire could withstand this onslaught, which could continue for as long as necessary. Sounds expensive, but weigh that cost against the cost of fighting a fire that is thousands of acres, using thousands of firefighters, for weeks!
I dated a girl named Bambi once, well, it was actually a 1 week stand. Anyways, just a weird name. I couldn't come to terms with bringing her to my family. Hi mom...hi dad.....this is Bambi. You like?.....
It's frequently used in the early stages of a fire, like an ember from the main fire jumped a fire break and started a spot fire. A dump of water can put it out or cool/slow it down so ground crews can finish the rest. Maybe help ground crews protect an area like a home or sensitive habitat. Cool the fire down enough that ground crews can safely work in an area. I've also seen it where a ground crew go trapped on a ridge and was about to get over run by the fire. Bucket of water directly over them gives them a safe zone to hide in their survival shelters.
5000 liters weighs 5 tonnes. For comparison the Skycrane tank is 10,000 liters or 10 tonnes of water.1000 liters in volume is one cubed meter of water. Not many choppers lift more than 5000 liters.
Is not gallons dude, is LITERS! better wake up and catch up with the rest of the world. imperial system is old and outdated. METRIC SYSTEM is the one that counts.
+randall greene stop crying, cry baby! You're just in denial, but eventually you will see the METRIC system as the US's primary measuring system too. American companies that want to do business outside of the US already have to use it, otherwise they can't do business other then inside the US. I don't expect you to know any of that, after all you have proven to be one serious dumb ass. LMFAO!!!
Humanos atravessam oceanos com uma frota de aviões para atacar os outros humanos, mas na hora de defender os animais e as florestas trabalham como tartarugas
Nice to see that americans are finally catching up with the rest of the world on the metric system instead of old imperial that is long outdated. No big deal, they're just a few centuries too late. Better later than never. LOL.
Cliff Tavares if your country suddenly switched to the American system, then everyone would have to be taught it because a lot of people don't know what kilometers per hour is compared with miles per hour. That's why America has slowly been switching
Kruct I understand what you're saying, but the transition from imperial to the metric system can be made very smoothly. Worst case scenario would take 10 years. Starting at schools teaching kids both systems to start with, so they can have a way of comparing but as the years go by slowly ditching the imperial system completely. Eventually America will will have to adopt the metric as they're default system in the future, not only for compatibility but also business wise with the rest of the world. This is actually already happening, many US companies that do business outside of the US already adopted the metric system as their default. Many countries have already switched from imperial to metric in the past. For example when the euros were introduced in Europe it was a very quick and smooth transition thanks to the the nice transition system they put together. Look it up on the internet to learn more about how they made the transition from old money to euros in all the different countries. It will happen eventually, it's just a matter of time.
+aussiefirie It's all the same dude, Canadians are the new modern Americans, or vice versa, can't really remember at this point, too much weed today. lol But one of them is right for sure, of that I'm certain! lol

The release mechanism reminds me of flushing a toilet 🚽
the bucket is really big, but for the scale of a massive forest fire, would it do all that much?

I’m sure it can get the middle of the fire so the firefighters can work on the outside. Perhaps allow them to rest
Not much, three choppers deployed here for a wild fire, about 10 sqkm area of forest have been razed down.
Big DRONE for dis bucket
Great product.
a Chinese woman says " such a weird name... "
Ok ,What is the smallest bucket and the largest bucket they make? I used to be in the fire business, Just like to know.
