A Day Water Bucketing with Helicopters

- In Canada, thousands of aircraft are deployed every year to help fight the spread of wildfires. If fighting fires was a warzone, the water bucket would be the most effective weapon.
Water is simply dipped from the most appropriate nearby water source with the bucket and then strategically release onto the predetermined area to minimise the spread of a front, or to completely extinguish a hotspot.
On this day, we were extinguishing hotspots that were still present from a fire in the previous summer.
Early in the video I have a malfunction that disabled me from releasing the water, which I soon fixed on the ground and then continued on with the task, hitting flagged areas of concern.
At the end of the video i go over why it probably malfunctioned in the first place.

"You're at my 3 o'clock"
"Yeah that doesn't help me but um I see someone with a hose"
I did a small spell with woodland firefighting out of high school, we had three choppers dropping buckets trying to slow it down and the crew I was with almost got backed into a corner. If it wasn't for someone with the skill, nerve, and good awareness to drop those buckets with good accuracy we may have had to abandon our position or even god forbid do a burn over. So hats off to you and what you do, fly safe out there.
great video.....I rather listen to the helicopter than that music.....helicopter sounds are music to some people....lol
Good to know because the music cost money 😂
New subscriber here. Love the content but I agree. Chopper audio is batter than music. Looking forward to seeing more content.
I agree, no need for music!
Natural sounds > music
I liked the music added to it!
Excellent insight into the never ending struggle to control fire.
Thank you.
Gotta be honest......... as obsessed with helicopters as I am, my favourite part was when you were chatting about getting food when you picked the guys up. I can relate.
Just found your video and enjoyed watching it. Excellent flying and excellent 360 camera at work and the music wasn’t too bad either. Thanks for producing it.
Another great video!
Including the maintenance and explanation at the end is appreciated too 👌🏻
Nice work! Loved the angles you got with the 360, combined with interior and audio made for a stellar video :) excited to see more. Subscribed! 🎉
Excellent! Careful, precise, safe (relatively).
This is great. My son is a Type 1, and I have always been curious how the heli show works.... you have one of the coolest jobs on the planet...Thanks alot!! (btw - glad to hear about the rain....even if it does slow things down a bit).
Awesome video mate. Just about to finish my CPLH in OZ. Looking forward to these types of jobs 👍
Thanks for taking us along!! The 360 camera does wonders for getting a good shot! look forward to seeing your next adventure!! subbed!!
Thank you for this cool perspective
I love the 360 / 3-D cam visuals both inside the cabin and on the line! Great work on with bambie... ;_)
Wonderful footage, thanks from France !
Good one! I'm a firefighter too, in Spain with the b412. Just wanted to point something out... Please, check the water release system before, ideally during the first pick up, just do a very small water pick up and check the system on the water, otherwise, if it fails with the bucket full of water, using almost all the power, you´ll get yourself into a trouble. Keep going!
Yeah thanks for the insight. It was the first bucket of the season but not my first rodeo
Videoing our flights is a great way to analyse and identify issues that we may need to correct in the near future - well done. It looks like the bucket went between the cables while setting up maybe? Thanks for another great video, I really enjoy these.
Yeah I noticed a few things about myself that I hadn’t seen before hahah thanks for the feedback man I really appreciate it
Amazing footage. Thanks
hey Mate, great vid, great editing, great camera work, great song. A job well done!
Nice job! Interesting to see your work! Greetings from the Netherlands
Nice video, I would fly with you anytime. That was tricky getting the bucket into the trees without getting snagged. Must be sorta stressful. Love that helicopter, they are so fun. Helicopters are safer than fixed wing in the backcountry because you can most always find a clearing if you lose an engine. Thanks for sharing.
Nicely done!
What a wonderful job you have.
Great vid! Great insight!!
Awesome.. I'm working so hard to get into aerial fire fighting :)
impressive flying!
Great vid mate 😎 fly safe
I have the same problem with a sea anchor. Ie the head tangles the lines if it is stowed loose. What I have learned to do is just tie the lines together below the head so it is obvious if it has gone through the lines. This saves alot of untangling when you go to use it. Hope this works on your system too 😎👍
Well done. Very exemplary 🤙🏻
Crazy stuff, also there are still lingering burns from a fire a YEAR AGO? That's nuts. I thought you were like.... watering the trees for logging purposes or something until I noticed smoke/steam after one of your drops
Checks all the time most important 😂 good job well done.
Like your attitude I got a good chuckle from your profile "I am not an influencer. I have a job." You sound like a Kiwi?...Subscribed.
Great Vid. Love the 407. Wish we had some in NZ!
don't be greedy, you already have all the 500's
@@ericrmd1448 Lol that is true. We can keep the 500s and get rid of a bunch of the boring 350s 😂
Good Job!
as someone who does quiet a bit of mop up, i wanna say DAMN i would LLOVE to have a heli helping out on mop up hahahah so rad what an awesome job! , stay safe and keep getting after it boss!
Can you do a Vid on how you progressed from CPL to where you are now? I recently got my CPL and getting into the industry is pretty rough if you dont have alot of connections :)
Good job
The "half moons" (no idea what they are called in english) can be split, its just a pin u need to knock out, just friction that holds it. its also a shim in there, so dont lose that when splitting. have to do it some times on the lifting equipment on our cranes
Great work only just found your channel. Subbed
Keep up the good work
cool vid, sweet job on the line, but not sure why the taping 2 sides separetly is still showed ? i did that for years too....instead grab all your wires together and tape them all together that way there is no chance of your head tangling back in trough the middle and the tape releases much easier on your first drop ...cheers have a safe summer
amazing content
Awesome video. What's your verdict on that Lift Helmet? I've heard not so good reports regarding it!
Hey man. Yeah look I love it, so comfy, especially if you are flying 8 hour days. There are a couple of downsides and maybe I’ll do a review of the helmet later on
awesome vid :D
can you get rid of the music? Just want to hear the helicopter
Note taken thanks man
Leave it haha love the suspense
great video!!! 😎👍
Just curious how much do aircraft systems help with the hovering? I really struggle to hover when looking directly down, I gotta look forward to do it effectively
Mmm, there aren’t really any systems that stabilize hovering in the 407
You should try and get the water bucketing job next fireseason in tassie lol
I remember doing this when I was in military it was minimum 4 mans job. did with blackhawk. Bambi's are heavy lol thanks for the memory.
Great video!!! I wonder what is minumum experience to get a helicopter job in Canada? It is good place to get hours for easa licensed pilots?
Minimum experience is a license
It's pretty safe working with Canadians as they always carry a pencil - because you never know when you might come across a sketchy situation
I’m gonna use that one 😂
@@bushpiloting Great work and video/channel btw.
Oh I thought this was gonna be a small peepee joke. That would’ve been better.
Those trees so close made me nervous...
Just curious as to why your basket for all your rope and gear is on the same side you pilot from doesn't that shift the center of weight too much or is it not a problem?
The helicopter sits left skid low, so having the basket on the right side helps that
@@bushpiloting ah ok interesting
This would be a great opportunity to do something like this especially in a Bell 407
A friend was involved with the power tower extension project. I asked him if he tried the e-ticket ride😆. He says what you mean the rigger seats on the end of the helicopter tether? Ha ha. He’s an engineer his response was hell no! Ha ha.
If you had an issue that didn't allow you to fly back from where you were stationed, how far is the closest road? Or would another helicopter be needed to come rescue you and the guys? great video.
Another helicopter would come get us. This far north in summer, the sun sets at midnight… so daylight is not an issue
Thanks 🙏 interesting vid. Does the bucket ever scoop up debris lifting water from those small ponds? I’d guess there’s quite a few weeds, branches, 🐸s floating around in that water….
Mmm if it does it’s mostly loose branches and weeds that could be laying on the bottom
Fantástic.
Great job!
Why the "trim rel" button blanked? No force trim on this helo?
There is no force trim on the B407
@@bushpiloting Tnx for the reply!
Any SAS stabilisation?
what is the point of pouring water on these random marked out areas ?
What was wrong with the water release system? I thought I saw a part (rope?) fall when you tried to release the first time.
Watch the last couple of minutes of the video and find out haha
"You're at my three-o'clock" - like that narrows it down😶
“You’re at my 3 o’clock”😂👌
Nice work! Why aren’t they mopping up with pumps and hose since they’re so close to a water source? Back in my days, I’d get my ass chewed off for wasting money and resources like that. Did a ton of bucketing, just not when it wasn’t necessary.
Living the dream 🇨🇦🏍️
Tell me more about your Lift Helmet? Ive heard the name but don’t know anyone who has one. I need to replace mine.
Man, it’s comfy as hell, but it’s made to fit one size and is unadjustable, so will be difficult to sell onto someone else. I think the new one is ajustable
"You're at my three o'clock"... classic 😂
I've said that when flying with mates - and then realised what I said was useless to them haha. A correction follows shortly after of course.
Flying HEMS I get that response all the time from the ground guys😅
@CrayonboxAviationAdventures wouldn't that mean they're on my 9 and I should look left or am I missing something
@@RegularItemShow he could be at any clock position around you and facing any direction.
@@Blackcloud_Garage ohh because I don't know what cardinal heading he's facing. I was thinking about it more in line of two planes flying in the same general direction (or a known direction)
Forgive the rookie question, but why is it necessary to lower the basket down into the trees and take on that risk of snagging? Can't you just drop it from above the trees? Deflection off the branches? - thx
Why be below average?
Dont listen to the haters! Keep doing you my man!!
Nice video but I am confused. A helicopter costs thousands of dollars an hour to fly. You’re putting water on hotspots close to plenty of water. It took someone walking through the woods to find and mark those hotspots. They make small lightweight engine operated pumps that can do that job a whole lot cheaper especially that close to water like that. The time it took them to mark those spots and then wait for the helicopter to come, they could have had the area soaked and moved on. I can understand all this if there isn’t a water source close by.
Helicopters don't leave ground scars like trucks and hoses make. Helicopters are cost effective and require no roads trails or fire breaks to go anywhere. A brush truck and a full crew cost the same doing all day what a helicopter does in minutes = helicopters are a force multiplyer
@@user-jq2rf4nf3o You all need a lot more helicopters then. Thats why you didn’t get all those fires out from last year.
@@treetopflyersofva2 More back fires, helitac crews - No roads, No trails, No ground access. Look at the aria - Bad planing is your issues not helicopters
Thanks for playing🤡🌎
Like I said. NEED MORE HELICOPTERS 🚁
For W&B, couldn't the gear basket be on the opposite side of the pilot?? Great vid!
Negative. The bell 407 sits left ski low due to the effect of tail rotor roll. To counteract this they have designed the machine to accommodate the basket on the right side, as well as the pilot
Skip the music 🤨🤨 Awesome video 💪💪👍👍
What brand of bucket you are using?
Bambi Bucket my dude
@@bushpiloting I worked with Simplex and Bambi. Bambi is the way to go. Safe flying.
What province was this taken place in?
NWT my bro
@@bushpiloting Good stuff! Hopefully Canada is treating you well. Greetings from North SK
um, why are you using a cargo hook? if you need to punch the bucket you use the belly hook so that you drop the line as well... especially since you're dragging the bucket through the trees like that. no PPE either, insane how different canuck fire is from us...
The cargo hook is bypassed to the bucket there captain 🧑✈️
The bucket works better too when it has a whole bunch of holes in it from dragging it through the trees. That’s how we do it in Canada 🍁
My mama told me
Be a simple kind of man
Someone who fly a helo every day
😎💪
ty x1000000
Did you see something fall out just before 5:08 into the video? It fell to the right and then onto the floor?
I see what you mean. I think it was just some grass or something that was pinched in the wires
Is it some sort of underground fire?
Yeah pretty much, it was a fire that was still smouldering over from the previous year
Why are you bucketing water on a fire that’s already out?
Not too sure what you’re dropping water on and why?
There are hot spots of concern that if left unattended could flare up and spread and now we have a full blown fire all over again
Music should go if you want more views. We want to hear the equipment
Are you still with HTS
Negative
So let's say the bucket gets snagged. Surely You can disconnect the bucket so you don't crash correct?
Yessirrrr, the long line is jettisonable from the belly of the helicopter
@bushpiloting Great. I know if I was a helo pilot and couldn't jettison the bucket I'd refuse to fly. Great stuff!
interesting but a drop in Portable pump seems SUCH A MORE EFFICIENT IDEA!!!
There's water EVERYWHERE!!!!!!
Congratulations you made a music video.
I should have said, I’m only joking. Very nice video. I appreciate your time.
Btw it’s great to see a family doing things together like my family did.
Drop the music when helicopter sounds better 😊
Flat earthers when they sea this video...
I'm just kidding i know its becuz of the camera ;)
NAV on SS009?
I think this was actually ss004
Aren't you guys scared of FOD? How do does this thing work?
Mmmmmm eating after the job.... Good times Pt 133
No way the guy on the ground is called Bruce 😂
Why not Fly on the Left Side so you don't have to move your body so much to look out the window?
Single pilot ops in a 407 is right side only
@@bushpiloting Since you're using the Helicopter for dropping water, why not fly it on the left side because it would be more ergonomical?
Yeah you’re not wrong, but that’s not how these machines were certified to fly single pilot
I’m surprised with today’s technology that bubble windows are still used versus a camera displaying on a screen. Do you know if that’s being worked on and is just going through a long certification process? Are glass cockpits just not that common yet?
Y it's good
That was really cool but please no music
Something fell off From the release I seen something flying
I had a POST LOTTO/POWERBALL dream that involved buying an aircraft company that did to 53Echos and the bigger ones like they do at througherbred or wutever it is those dudes in kentuky... anyhow, then my company would LEASE THEM BACK to the cool helo pilots that are out there hustling like you are!!! HAVE AN AWESOME EVERY THING !!!
LOVE JOY COMPASSION
and lots of them went up to alaska and out to ''the bush'' for the BIG BERTHA HEAVY JOBS ... majority of the ''leases'' went to water droppers.... imagine droppin water in a 53echo... SCHWINNNGGGGG !!! :) or is that just me?
Forget the rap. Blade and turbine noise is better.
The same asshle who put the orange flags up could have with a bucket and 10 minutes done the same, scooping water from the creek 20 feet away. Why the hell does an expensive chopper need to do this? No there wasn't any fire, this was days later.
Yeah rogie
No steam when dropping the bucket = no hot spot
Negative maverick
