This is an unbelievably cool project! You don’t usually see “Homemade,” “sidescan sonar” and “submarine” in the same sentence but you guys pulled it off beautifully
Yeah, we tested out the loiter mode, but it didn't work well because our motors spin only in one direction and the boat can't go backwards. I think loiter mode requires that
I've worked in the marine robotics industry for over ten years now, and I've actually run surveys there just off the coast of Gdansk and Gdynia. You guys are doing a great job! Very impressive. It's a lot of fun watching your projects unfold.
Tech diver here who has worked on quite a few survey/recovery projects. The professional companies I worked for all used Higain omnidirectional antennae even when using a drone 50 metres away. I was told it was amazing how much a swell of half a metre can affect the signal. Secondly, can you not print a housing that can be slung between the floats but 100% under the surface? That rectangular block could house your sub. As it is in the water, your sub should be able to be deployed free using thrusters. Upon return, the cable reel takes up the c\slack and the sub using thrusters again re-enters its housing block to return with the boat. The stress on the fibre cable put on it by towing puts your sub in danger of being lost if it snaps. The currents underwater can get up to 7-10 knots. Add that speed to the directional pull of the boat can put (boat speed+underwater current = total stress), on your fibre line.
I would even switch to 915mhz version to have better range so close to ground. And I would try to analyze the pins from the plug of the sonar sensor, and just try to mirror it over 4g\5g internet to the ground station head unit (but that will be quit difficult).
I was thinking exactly the same, when i saw the radio. With ELRS you can have a range of many kilometers at best. Maybe you could also do the videosignal via some drone protocol by simply filming the screen of the onboard Hummingbird with a drone camera. That would probably also save you some energy.
That would definitely help. Raising the antenna as much as possible would also help - the water is going to tend to reflect and scatter RF signals which can be very annoying to spread-spectrum systems. ELRS also has a 2.4gHz/915mHz combo option now that would be really nice for a use case like this.
Cool video. The problem you have with the waves is mainly due to the fact that you have a very short length of the boat making very unstable, there are two solutions to reduce the bounce of the boat, 1. make it longer, a lot longer 20 to 30 ft which would help stabilize but that will be a huge boat. The other way is to build the boat with SWATH technology hulls, if you can get the motors on a kind of pontoon that operates about 1m under the surface of the water you can have a super sable platform to mount the sonar onto. The other solution is to make a towable drone that operates at about 1m below the surface and mount the transducer onto that to maintain its stability. your image will be much smoother. This could have some far reaching implications for SAR in bodies of water, this is an awesome project.
they COULD cheat and make the transducer (sonar head) that already sit on a stick.. add two gimbal servos to keep it mostly level at all times.. COULD add yaw as well to compensatete for boat being turned by waves during the search, simply do absolute stability on pitch and roll.. and dampened follow on yaw, so if you turn the boat, in a few seconds it will follow the boats new heading, but won't be tossed off by a abrupt yaw moment.. its a hack, but old-fashioned droned gimbals used servos and we flew 5-8pound cameras.. with servo stability - the tech is pretty off the shelf.
Amazing video! Brief note about the wreck The remains of the IL2 in the bottom of the water are the metal components of the plane, basically the main fuselage and the roots of the wings. The wings and tail were made of wood, so they disappeared by degradation and time. There is a wonderful scale model made by Diego Quijano in 1/48 of an IL2 showing its materials, look at it, and you will see how the submerged remains of the aircraft fit with the original metal structure of the plane.
Your „little project“ literally replaces a multi-million dollar boat/helicopter/submarine which are usually used to find a wreck. That’s mindblowing. I love that you’ve also talked about some technical aspects
@mfeldheim No, it doesn't literally replace a multi-million dollar boat/helicopter/submarine. They're doing this in shallow water and at a snail's pace. Searching for MH370 and the likes requires multi-million dollar equipment.
The first set of antennas did not work, most likely because, with the polarization it uses, there is a certain minimum height above the surface on which the antennas must be installed, and this is clearly not 2 meters.
@@CPSdrone Also (purely from my own experience) radio systems often works better having significant height difference on their ends. Like, 10th stage of a building on one side and just ground -- another.
I had a similar idea when I was younger, and you guys did such a great job creating it irl. I could never have the patience, time, or materials to do this, great work!
For the future, a good option for long range wireless communication might be LoRaWAN it's specifically designed to be able to transmit and receive from ridiculous distances and very low powers. LoRaWAN specifically is designed to host a wifi network across the LoRa protocol, which would be perfect for your router issues. LoRa can easily span over a kilometer without directed antennae, and with them, I believe the range is ~8 km
LoRa is for low power and low bandwidth applications, like remote sensors. In this case the direct video from their underwater drone require a lot more than a few kbps so I don't think it is a good option for them.
@@adicsbtw Yes it's cool, but it's a bit expensive for consumers if you just want to try with little devices. For professional use cases (or semi pro) it is really great
Really cool projects. Couple of improvement ideas. Make the sonar be always vertical (active or passive control) and also maybe turn it to compensate for steering angle because of wind.
You don't really need to interact with the Hummingbird screen, do you? Just point a wireless camera at the Hummingbird screen, inside a black box. You'll lose a little resolution, but a DJI O3 Air Unit can transmit around 2 miles, uses less power, costs $200.

This is really cool stuff you are dooing. If you want to improve the quality of the sonar image, I would suggest you look into building a SWATH type vessel. They are specifically designed to not be affected so much by waves.
