Respect to Michael Eavis for getting them to headline the Pyramid Stage. People bitched and moaned, but Metallica proved them wrong. They proved that for a genre that is very often dismissed, condemned and stereotyped, metal has the power to move people.
After watching this on the BBC I'd of given anything to have been there, I bought the CD from that night it's nearly worn out, in my opinion one of the greatest appearances Glastonbury has ever seen, makes me mad people welcome all the pop poppettes to a festival but turn up their noses in disgust at the thought of one of the best live acts going performing there.
Hearing that famous bit at 4:40 in Glastonbury, is just amazing haha. The middle class coldplay listening volvo driving Glastonbury crowd wouldn't know what had hit them.
Jamie Smith Kinda understandable really. Glastonbury is mainly a pop/niche festival these days. No-one really expected the biggest metal band ever to headline. I mean, by the time they were announced the tickets were long sold out. Tix for Glastonbury sell out in less than 24 hours usually.
Metallica fucking killed it in Glastonbury, I dont understand the dislikes. Lars was on fire, maybe got a bit sloppy towards the end but the first half was 11/10
Glastonbury has sadly become more “pop” over the years but I’d hardly call it a pop festival, plenty of rock / alternative acts play it every year. Used to be primary known as a guitar band heavy festival so to speak.
I'm not even that big a Metallica fan but this performance has been better than anything else on the lineup. Need more rock/metal bands at Glastonbury. Maybe Slash to headline next year?
Metallica are by far the biggest metal band on the planet and by far bigger than all the other bands at glasto put together, Metallica showed all the young whupper snappers how to rock for real, they have been there and done it all over the years, good on you Metallica....
It's good to see Glastonbury festival bringing some of the heavier bands. You can tell the band really enjoyed it. There was tears in james' eyes when they turned the lights on.
Anyone slagging Metallica hasn't really got much of a clue, 33 years on the main stage and counting, who cares what some arse who loves Kasabian thinks, yeah Glastonbury is mainly an indie fest but all gigs are now watered down look at Reading etc, its all about commercial viability. Metallica are by far the biggest and best in the world, the likes of even AC/DC are envious of.
When James opens on anything it's perfect plus I like that little two note extra to the intro, just that little part makes it so epic! But my favorite opening rhythm is Fade to Black
Of all genres that performed at this years glastonbury metallica proved that heavy metal isnt something to laugh at n involves so much more passion and fan interaction than any 'pop' band or 'indie' act could ever replicate. The talent hits the 10 with metallica n metal in general when the autotuned chart bull we have nowdays require nothing but a vocalist. The metal genre will from now will only become the main attraction in a few years time when people realise theres so much more to the music.
I've read lots of comments knocking them last night. I go by what I saw, and the crowd reaction- and I loved them. 30+ years and still going strong. Music critics just irritate me- they should invest some time playing music instead of writing essays about it. See how much better they can do. Thanks Metallica
The critical and Glasto fan reaction to this has been hilarious. Like it was a mind blowing performance. As a long standing Metallica fan, this was average by their standards. But at Glastonbury, they're the best there was, the best there is, and the best that audience will ever see. Should have been booked years ago. Metallica's average is Glastonbury's best. Metal up your ass!
I saw Metallica at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1993. It was an additional gig called No where left to roam. It was brilliant. I still have my ticket. Of course this was the last song played.
this is the first time i tuned in to watch Glastonbury in a long while. Metallica were the only band worth seeing. oh and Hetfields vocals were fricken awsome!
I love indie rock, but as well i love metallica, why there are people who likes indie rock but doesn't like metallica? I mean, I know they are different genres but come on, they are a legend
At last metallica at glasto! about time it was a rock concert again, was getting worried there for a while with the likes of jay-z headlining!! awesome set guys!
If you dissing Metallica for playing at your ooh aaah festival then you do not love music. No matter what happened to them after the 90s they are one of the most important bands ever, still rock live and their legacy will last.
I remember when someone brought this into our English class at school and played it to all of us and the female teacher. (This was in 1990 or thereabouts.) When it ended she said "thank God for that!". I must say I thought that as well. He got a good laugh when he boasted of it to the others (lot of metalheads in my school). I'm more of a folkie but the guitars here remind me a bit of Full House era Fairport Convention.
its crazy people complained about Metallica headlining but they are happy to have stormzy headline lmao . says it all . If you attend a rock festival and would rather see stormzy over Metallica you are a fool
I remember a few months before the were announced a music newspaper said ‘Metallica are due to play Glastonbury on what we assume will be the second stage due to not being big enough band for the main stage’ I was like wtf they’ve sold 125 million albums and sell out arenas. Glastonbury literally had someone who sold 100,000 albums headline last year. They are clueless U.K. papers lol
Troll here... I saw these guys on their 2nd tour with Armoured Saint and WASP. Tuned out after Ride the Lightning (when the band wagon jumpers climbed aboard) The only reason the drummer sounds off ,on the double bass drum segment , is because it was played too quickly here. Cut the guy the slack. ( I'm a guitarist)
Metallica have sold more albums than most acts that played Glastonbury this year COMBINED. How you could say that they don't belong there is beyond belief. Especially considering they put on one of the best live shows in the world. If you're criticising their involvement in this you're either a snob or ignorant. If Glastonbury is to be considered one of the top and most diverse music festivals, it needs to involve more metal bands.
It's easy to argue that they didn't belong there. It's an Indie festival, not a Metal one. If people wanted Metal that could go to Sonisphere, they're amount of sales has nothing to do with it.
And what about all the other big non-indie acts that played Glastonbury? Skrillex, Dolly Parton, Disclosure, Fatboy Slim, Robert Plant. Seems pretty varied to me, and the turnout for Metallica confirmed a lot of people there wanted to see them.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind them being there to say an easy argument to make. Also apart from Dolly Parton all those artists fall under indie/edm/electronica variants. For the record I liked Metalica's performance slow start but nice end.
Glastonbury was already one of the top and most diverse musical festivals out there before this year. It is far more diverse than say Reading or the 'metal festivals' such as Download and Sonisphere. Those festivals and most others would get nowhere near a typical Glastonbury lineup as far as diversity is concerned. To state that it is just an indie festival just because big name metal artists were not previously included is slightly ignorant to say the least.
As I am nearing mid 30's everyone around me is getting older... They all wish they still rocked as good as Metallica! Hopefully TooL held up good if only they'd release a new album and tour in my area.
So much for hoping to find some intellectual discussion. That's it, I'm never reading the comments on any RUclips video ever again. All i see is people pointlessly arguing with each other and people deliberately trying to annoy fans of this type of music.
Respect to Michael Eavis for getting them to headline the Pyramid Stage. People bitched and moaned, but Metallica proved them wrong. They proved that for a genre that is very often dismissed, condemned and stereotyped, metal has the power to move people.
We won't see the likes of Ellie Goulding headlining a stage at Glastonbury 2044, that's for sure.
EXCELLENT comment
I respect ypu Thankyou ppl did respect

I was there and they blew me away by far the best performance at Glastonbury that year
Hearing that famous bit at 4:40 in Glastonbury, is just amazing haha. The middle class coldplay listening volvo driving Glastonbury crowd wouldn't know what had hit them.

Agreed. Gotta have those clicks!
That's all you could hear when you were there though, the crowd was pretty lifeless by me too
JasnoGT Agreed. Nothing from Justice sounds the same without those clicks :D

those engineers polished that turd exquisitely
Love the fact that the hippies were rejecting Metallica in the media.
Metallica played, rocked the house!
They were angry over the fact that James prefers to hunt his own meat and doesn't buy it packaged from a clean supermarket.

you realise this is an anti war song? and hippies fought hard to try and stop anyone from ending up like the guy in this song?
@@jamesduffy7549 well so did the punks

If all the Lars bashing didn't exist, I'd of never noticed his mistakes. I don't think he's terrible though.
i love how a metal band walks into this pop festival and absolutely blows every performance that festival has ever seen out of the water.
Maybe Slash to headline next year?
slash no more metal, yes.
needs more slayer, megadeth and iron maiden is what you are saying? if so i agree
AnyTechReviews more metal, but no Slash. Much better stuff is out there, like Mastodon
AnyTechReviews I think we need more metal and Rock in everything nowadays
Slash headlined about 5 years ago.
Metallica Headlining Glastonbury is probably there best ever headline imo. This band has lasted the test of time, very few bands can do that.
there’s quite a few sets better than this though. David Bowie, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, The Smiths, etc.
Metallica are by far the biggest metal band on the planet and by far bigger than all the other bands at glasto put together, Metallica showed all the young whupper snappers how to rock for real, they have been there and done it all over the years, good on you Metallica....

Thanks Metallica, great show. Hate to say it, that even as an Arcade Fire fan, this just nailed it.
I WAS THERE. Best act on the whole line-up!
When James starts the DARKNESS part, it's probably the best he's done it since 1989 low, fast, heavy Metallica. They kicked ass
It's good to see Glastonbury festival bringing some of the heavier bands. You can tell the band really enjoyed it. There was tears in james' eyes when they turned the lights on.

The best metal song of all time.
