Lagman House Is NYC’s Only Dungan Restaurant

- Meet the family behind Lagman House, the only restaurant in America serving Dungan cuisine.
During the times of the Silk Road, some Hui Chinese women married Arab Muslim silk traders. The offspring of this pairing created the Dungan people. After facing societal oppression in China, the Dungans immigrated to central Asia, settling in places like Kazakhstan and Krygyzstan.
One of these Dungan families is the Azimovs, who immigrated from Kazakhstan to Brooklyn in search of a better life.
Once the Azimovs moved to Brooklyn, they decided to share their culture's unique cuisine with the world by opening Lagman House. The family works together serving recipes that have been passed down for generations to their new community in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.
Their food resembles Chinese food with noteworthy Russian and Kazakhstani influence. The specialty at Lagman House is the hand-pulled noodles (lagman), which are cooked and served with ingredients like beef, onions, garlic, and bell peppers. Other popular dishes are the chives stir fry, the Dungan-style samsa, the eggplant gravy and the Dungan noodle soup.

Glad to see they get some exposure,i went there last year while i was in the neighborhood, good food and service.
Best of luck to you guys! Next time I am in NYC, I will definitely check this place out
Next time I'm in Brooklyn I'm comin thruuuu
I’m going here as soon as i get to Brooklyn
God, this is so frustrating, being so far away and unable to visit and try their incredibly delicious looking food. Not to mention wanting to support them financially during this wretched year which is destroying the hospitality industry. Please hang in there Azimov clan! My stomach and my open wallet are coming your way just as soon as international travel opens up again! xo :)
Different Cultures are fucking cool man. I haven't heard of Dungans before other than StarWars' Dungans.
Amazing..❤❤❤❤❤🙌🙌🙌😎🌷🍀🌻🍷Cheers..!!!
Isn’t that where Borat is from?
I can confirm that this place is absolutely legit. I get food from them all the time! The noodles are absolutely to die for!
Thanks for the review, Vadim. I wanna take a trip out there; Brooklyn, born and raised here. LOVE Sheepshead Bay! The food looks very homestyle, comfy. Definitely on my to-do list once they get this Covid-19 BS under control. 😑 Their fairly new to the business (2018), and hope they're doing well. Keep supporting small business. Be safe. 😃

Thank you for making this video. I never heard of Dungan people, their culture, or their food before. This video was informative and I look forward to trying their restaurant once it is safe for my whole family to travel again. These people are the epitome of the American dream to me and I'm glad they decided to spread their culture. Muslim Chinese people who live in countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and other independent states of the former Soviet Union makes the Dungan people the perfect target for narrow minded Americans here. Glad they decided on moving to New York and I wish them success in their future endeavors.
Kazak and kırgız are not chinese .
@@ulgenkoc2893 He didn't say they were! (The Dungan people, however, are arguably Hui Chinese Muslims in exile.)
Very well said Jackson Walter.
Jackson Walter this is interesting. I wonder if there is a Dungan restaurant in SF that I can try. I’m really interested in learning more.

It was such a beautiful moment when she was standing with her daughter and making noodles the same way her mother and her did it a long time ago and probably many generations before them

My grandmother used to make me lagman when I was a kid. My grandfather helped her prepare the noodles. They used to tell me stories about their childhood. I swear that was my first thought 10 seconds into the video.
Dungan is essentially Hui Chinese (one of the two major Muslim group in China) living in central Asian and you can even find at 0:54 on its signboard where the Chinese letter actually means "Hui People Food". There are actually many Hui and Xinjiang restaurants in NY such as Dun Huang - East Village or Lanzhou Ramen

The only of any kind of restaurant/culture in NYC is highly impressive. The city is a melting pot.

Touched my heart when the two little girls said they wanted to work at the restaurant to see their mother more.
Immigrants are one of the hardest working people in America. They bring respect, culture and family values. American can learn a lot from these people.
My mom came from Mexico we had a Mexican restaurant, us kids who worked in it learned how to work, not be wasteful and how to handle money 😀.
Yes indeed. I know a Vietnamese family who used to have their young children do their homework in the back of the restaurant. Now they’re all grown up and are in college and have graduated from college and they are now professionals. Mom and dad still work in the restaurant and it is doing very well. In fact it’s doing fine in the midst of this pandemic. Their work ethics is so admirable. Only in America.
Should have some seed money to start business. The poor will continue to be poor. Not enough to eat, let alone start a business.
Who is american ??? Do you mean the Navajo ?
As much as we try to deny it almost every person yelling build that wall had someone in their family stepping off the boat in a strange place just trying to survive. Immigration built America and is its strongest assets.
Great job to this channel for highlighting hidden gems like this. These people are minorities within a minority group, and it was awesome that the video did included the history of these people alongside the food. Often times such small ethnic groups have their identify erased amongst the demographics, and its refreshing to see them get the spotlight! Great video
My parents were born and raised in Kazakhstan as part of the German minority. They moved to Germany more than 30 years ago but I enjoy it very much if my Mom makes Russian/Kazakh food e.g. Blinchiki, Manti, Pilaf, Piroshki, etc. It's more than delicious 😍
i live in a smaller city/town in australia and 5 minutes from my house theres a xinjiang/uighur restaurant 5 minutes from my house. they seem to be doing well. the food is very similar to dungan food and the flavours are absolutely insane.

My head is spinning: they're of mainly Han Chinese ancestry but with distant Arab/Persian blood and they speak Russian .
"So, Chinese cuisine then?"
Them: "Well, yesn't"
More o less
well, you can find this kind of cuisine in china, but the cooks can't speak russian
It’s complicated. It appears to be a mix of Muslim, Russian, and Northern Chinese. There are so many different Chinese cuisines and ethnic groups. Hard to lump them together. For an example, I’m of Taishanese (southern China) descent and we mostly eat rice dishes, with less spices. And our noodles are mostly rice based. Northern China seems to have more wheat noodle dishes.
Rick R not just find it. It’s nearly one on every street in mainland China the beef noodle soup is the most popular hang over food after you eat a bowl of that your headache goes down. I would probably say it’s as popular as beef pho in America
@@Ladeliciadelinda Lagman has nothing to do with Russian cuisine. It's a typical Central Asian dish all Central Asians love and know, but Russians in Russia don't know it and don't know how to cook it
It so cool that they are Dugans from KZ and they speak perfect Russian, they use Chinese names for the ingredients and their family speaks English with proper American accent:)
Those dishes are common chinese northwestern dishes. NY has tons of FOB chinese that can translate for them. It's no surprise that the menu names are authentic.
It’s really weird for you to bring up that they have a “proper American accent” Did you even watch the video? The dad and mom didn’t speak a word of English, and almost everyone else had a heavy accent.
Cross pollination
@@AndalusianLuis : They seems to be speaking Russian. Some people associate Russian to Mongolian.. and if you listen, it is half Mongolian, or some classify it as "Manchu".. when you read online, in online materials... the "truth" is always based on the learner.. to repeat what is understood... If you put all of those "languages" together, it is the same. Basically it is Mongolian, with a little bit of something else mixed into it.
"The five nations are Han, Manchu, Mongolian, Hui, and Tibetan form the Chinese nation. " - Taiwan proposed this model, but people rejected it !!! Stupid asses... and now, there is no such a thing as "Dungan" groups....

History and food are two things that connect people. One day I showed a senior Dungan man speaking Dungani language to my friend from central China, he could literally understand everything but commented that the man sounds like he came from 100 years ago. That’s the time they immigrated to Central Asia. The legacy stays ❤️

Their menu is far out, from Russian salads to Asian noodle dishes and Central Asian style buns & dumplings
The steamed bread is staple in northern China. The steamed dumplings are staple in Shanghai area. You don't see them because most Chinese restaurants in the West are owned by the Cantonese who are from the southeast China and don't cook these kinds of food.
These are typical food in northwestern China, like Gansu and ningxia province.

fun fact in Scandinavia "Lagman" is a job title for the chairman of the various departments of the courts of appeal and of the courts of appeal, its a very old name was first used in the viking age. In the viking age Lagman duty was also to safeguard the rights and liberties of the people and to speak in their behalf to the king or his representative.
