  • Finally one of the "Big 4" manufacturers is making a DMR Radio for Amateur Use. Alinco has done a good job of taking a radio and adding to it what Hams have been asking for. I think this radio is probably one of the top Dual Band DMR HTs I have used, to date.

    With digi moni enabled the radio finds colour code TG and ID , great for listening to commercial freq when you don’t know that information. Had this radio a couple of months now and is solid . Still using this radio in vfo mode and have never connected the radio to a pc as of yet.👍

    HI Jason thanks for the review, just put my hands on one yesterday, one month used for 100$ CAN, That is the model with GPS. I am impressed by this radio so far, which is a the same as an Anytone but in a smaller package. Will get it programmed over the weekend. 73, VA2DG

    While powered off, Hold down ( number 1 key + PTT key ) and turn radio on.
    When screen says "DJ-MD5 TEST MODE" let go of both keys and allow to boot.
    Turn CH selector on top of radio, and select (Mode 11) for full 400-520MHz 136-174
    Turn off radio and now the radio will stay in that band Mode, go to your cps software, turn on your radio and read from the radio again and save your new codeplug with extended frequency coverage, and work with that codeplug from now on.
    The Btech 6X2 & Anytones D868, D878 can ALSO extend their frequency/bands too, as they are exactly the same insides.
    This DJ-MD5 is the best of the 4, because it is the only one with 200 mw power output for hotspots.
    *edit my bad, i forgot to mention you may have to redo some settings, re-add channels back into zones ect... after each mode change. :)

    I have the AnyTone AT-D878UV and it's antena is exactly the same as the one you showed on Alinco DJ-MD5. Also both models are 95% identical. By the way if I am not wrong both radios are made by AnyTone.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  5 лет назад +2

      Exactly the same and 95% identical don't mean the same thing, first off.
      Yes, both radios are made in the same factory in China, but I don't *think* they are made by Anytone. It is a 3rd party vendor making them for both Alinco and Anytone, and BTECH.

    Your video must have come out right about the same time Remtronix released firemware 1.10 which allows dAPRS. No analog APRS unfortunately like the 878 but some of us DMR users dont necessarily need that. Still a little buggy but still very usable.

    I think the biggest issue for me with this radio is you can't swap between channel showing your programmed alphanumeric name and VFO. If you set a side key to the V/M function - it will show you your channel # with freq and swaps to vfo when pressed, but not your name for the channel but only if you switch it to frequency display to channel under "work mode". Now set work mode to "Channel" it'll show your alphanum name for your channels, have no A/B functionality, v/m will not bring up VFO. I understand that the channel no vfo is for part 90 but darn wouldn't it be nice to have VFO and your channel name since it's an amateur focused radio - give us a 3rd option under work mode - Channel, Frequency, and Channel/V/M where A and B show - a being VFO and B being your channel select.

    Tried to put my speaker mic that works fine on a Baofeng but will not plug into my DJMD5. I contacted Remtronix and was told to only use the ALINCO EMS-76 otherwise it could void the warranty. The alnico speaker mic is expensive, but I got it and it plugs in just fine. Bottom line is that the Kenwood plug style doesn't work.

    That is not a standard 2 prong Kenwood connector. Alinco has to be special so they can make money on accessories I'm sure. The plugs are slightly closer together and I believe the mic and audio jacks are flipped. I knew the Alinco speaker mic jacks were proprietary because I have an Alinco DJ-500. I bought this radio one as soon as they were released as well as the Alinco speaker mic. The speaker mic is small and cheap feeling and the receive audio is not very good. It's low and tinny. I've not had any complaints on the speaker mic transmit audio. Not my favorite radio but it works.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  5 лет назад

      I will have to check on the reversed audio/mic jacks, but this connector is NOT the narrow-prong ones that other models use, like the Connect Systems radios, etc. And this model is fashioned more after the Anytone DMR HT than it is the DJ-500 or previous Alinco models. But I will test this connection with a standard speaker-mic and see what I can find.

    • @JD9RX830

    That is not a Kenwood SPKR/MIC connector. It is different. I use Alinco DJ-500T/TB and Alinco DJ-MD5TGP radios and they use the same connector for SPKR/MIC; it's an Icom/Motorola type which I don't remember off of the top of my head. One of the advantages is that an ear bud can be plugged directly into the SPKR line without any issue.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  4 года назад +1

      I'll have to go back and look, but I believe it was the same as the Kenwood connector (the Kenwood style will also allow you to plug and earbud directly into the jack)
      My Kenwood D74 isn't even a "standard Kenwood" connector any longer. The "standard" one used, that used to be a Kenwood style, is now primarily a Wouxun/Baofeng connector.

    • @hansoak3664
      @hansoak3664 4 года назад

      @@HamRadio2 Yeah, we might be saying the same thing.
      Usually, when people are talking "Kenwood" connector these days, they mean the "Baofeng" connector. The Alinco DJ-MD5/TGP, Alinco DJ-500T/B, etc do not use the "Baofeng" type connector. The plugs are physically spaced differently and electrically wired differently. I have a lot of stuff with "Baofeng" connectors here but use primarily our Alinco radios day-to-day and they aren't the Kenwood/Baofeng connector.
      Please check it out and post back on it. At one point, I figured out what the connector was being called at MFJ because I wanted an aftermarket SPKR/MIC but I have forgotten what the connector type designation. I think it was being referred to by a "Motorola" designation and it fit a bunch of ICOMs. I know my old Motorola SPKR/MIC for the original Motorola Talkabout FRS radios works with the Alinco DJ-500T/B and DJ-MD5/TGP because that's what I use on the rare occasions I need one. (I seem to remember the designation as "Motorola M2" or "M1"; or perhaps it was an ICOM designation???)

    Hi Jason, first and foremost I wish you a very happy new year.
    Thank you for this DJ -MD5T superb review which was of great help. I have been scouting for a DMR radio and came across a couple of sellers of Alinco products in New Delhi and Kolkata (formerly Calcutta).
    I had a look and feel of this radio. The screen looks impressive but I feel it is a bit thick though. The sellers claim that it has inbuilt gps as well as APRS. However, I feel it may have only the digital Aprs and not the analog Aprs.
    These sellers have been claiming that this is made in Japan while all Alinco products are of Japan which I suspect.
    The radio is priced at around USD 140. I want to know do I have to also buy a separate node/Hotspot something to this DMR work? Kindly excuse me as I am new to DMR.
    Can you also suggest if it is still worth buying this radio or if there are better ones to opt for.
    Cheers & 73s

      Yes I do recommend this radio. Yes you would need a hotspot to use it with DMR, UNLESS you have a DMR repeater near you, and then you can use it on the repeater to gain access to the DMR network.

      @@HamRadio2 Thank you Jason for your prompt response. At my New Delhi QTH there is a repeater which is compatible to DMR. The repeater id is VU2HUB-R with state-of-the-art infrastructure privately run by two enterprising brothers.
      As I am new to DMR, does it mean that if I am in an area close to a digipeater I won't need a Hotspot? And if I am away then would I need to be connected via Hotspot?
      Also would like to know if the Hotspot comes as a separate device with tiny external antenna that can be carried just like a mobile and handy?
      Between the Anytone AT868UV and DJ-MD5(EGP), which DMR would you suggest? And lastly, is the Alinco DJ-MD5 (EGP) made in Japan?
      Apologies Jason, for loading you with my silly queries but honestly, I keenly follow all your videos and livestreaming from Dallas and always consider you as one of the few my go to man for ham radio knowledge.

    Does it worth it's money ? For instance TYT MD-UV380/390 DMR twice cheaper and also more protected (390) and uses Double Conversion Superheterodyne inside and bigger battery. What would you choose Alinco DJ-MD5 or TYT MD-UV380/390 DMR ? And another question does the Anytone AT-D878UV is the clone of this radio ?

      Alinco has more features, like VFO and FPP. Also it holds more channels and contacts in memory. The UV380/390 is good, but yes, the Alinco is a better choice.

    The CPS and Radio OS looks just like AnyTone.
    The Alinco looks to be too fat for my likes. I put the 2100mh battery on my 868 just to make it slimmer. I like the knobs on the Alinco better than the AnyTone.
    If I remember correctly the AnyTone does that back/delete thing too. I wish they would fix that. The first time I saw it I thought it was going to erase what I had programmed in.
    I guess the HD1 is the only one who is going to do a speaker mic like the Moto XPR.
    The usb connection is a good idea. I only have one programming cable for my radio and I can't tell you how many times I've left it at work only to get home, redo my code plug and have an oh dang it moment hahah
    With DMR being the fastest growing. I wish Kenwood would give us a DMR version of the D74.
    Question. When you talked about programming in one channel and using the list to call up other talkgroups. That would be ok on a hotspot but would that cause issues on a repeater?
    I know some repeaters like to keep local stuff on Slot2 while using Slot1 for other talkgroups.
    Good review

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  5 лет назад

      I personally like the larger batteries which provide more life between charges. I liked that the D878 came with a 3100 mah battery.
      Kenwood has said they won't be a DMR radio for Amateurs because they are afraid their commercial customers would buy it for commercial use, instead of their high-priced commercial DMR radios.
      I don't see how it would cause issues with a repeater to always use one channel because you can edit the RX and TX frequencies, as well as CC, TS and then activate a TG in the other menu. It would be more steps, but still doable.

    • @dwayne5530
      @dwayne5530 5 лет назад

      @@HamRadio2 Thanks. I didn't know Kenwood made commercial DMR radios but yeah that would make sense why they don't fo them for Amateurs.
      HD1 IMO looks commercial grade and I like the way the speaker mic attaches. The only thing that stopped me from buy it was I hate the way the UI looks. If they change the UI on version 2. I'd probably be in for one.
      I was just wondering if you was on TS2 and went through the List and keyed up a TG that the repeater owner said to do on TS1 if that would cause problems if you didn't go in and change the TS.
      Have you heard any updates on the AnyTone mobile D578?

The big difference ist that the Anytone has APRS (Digital+Analog) and two more programable buttons plus a Mode what listens not only to all talkgroups - it will listen to both TS at the same time also. So If you want this radio with APRS (and some more features) - get the Anytone (right now the "Masterpiece" of a DMR-Radio). I'm very happy with my Anytone.
