    I wish more radios would include modern features. I have a 70D that I've seen said is easy to program, though it is still a mess of tiny buttons, function keys, confusing screen, etc. I have no issue figuring it out with background in electronics, but for anyone getting into ham it's extremely daunting.

    • @HamRadio2

      Yaesu menus are a mess, overall. I didn't like the lack of features in the 70D

    I've had mine for about a week now. What a great little radio with some features that the big brands need to pick up on. The BT programing is awesome, the USB Driver was a bit difficult to find and get working, but that seems par for the course for USB programable radios. The flash light is awesome! The red and blue flashing is a great feature. I wish all HT's had flashlights of some sort. The rubber covers are nice and solid and don't pop out like my D74 which has some pretty crappy covers. I found the antenna lacking. While listening to my local repeaters on 3 different radios, this radio would sometimes not hear the repeater and would be silent. My D74 has a stubby antenna and I can hear my local repeaters with it. This has a nice looking antenna, flexible, etc, but it sux on receive and xmit in comparison. Sure it's larger than a UV5R format, but still fits nicely in the hand. Love the color.

      Honestly I didn't even try plugging it into the computer yet. Likely I will do that soon on another video. I wanted to demonstrate the BT programming, which I think works quite well. But thanks for the feedback on the USB driver issue.

    The only thing I would suggest for radioddity in terms of us blind hams, is to not only speak the channel number, but also have a way that we could possibly put it in a more verbose mode where it would speak the menu. Perhaps we could do this by holding down two keys as the radio turns on, like you can with the THD 74. On a DMR radio, this would mean we could add contacts and channel names etc. keep up the great work.

    Dear China, I know it’s the difference in bill of materials between 1 cent and 10 cents per unit, but for the love of all that’s good and decent, stop using mciroUSB! Let’s just get everything to USB-C by now and going forward. Making the charger part of the battery is brilliant though.

    I like the looks and construction of this radio, but I would pass on this radio if you use IPhone and/or MacOS. The IPhone App syncs fine and can read and write to the radio but you are unable to set the frequency on the IPhone App and it doesn't save your setting once you exit. Also, there is no software for MacOS, only Windows.

    Sounds like it’s built on the same chips as the Baofengs. Chinese hardware designers are just making the most universal products first, and then conforming them to local regulations after. Hence the encryption option; not like I’d trust a low-cost Chinese radio to implement military-strength Strong Cryptography anyway. More like “kid sister” encryption, no doubt.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  4 года назад +1

      Radioddity does several models that are Baofengs underneath, but this one has another brand name somewhere that isn't Baofeng. Never seen a Baofeng like this.

      I don’t think that these Chinese radios are garbage. In the 10 years that the have been in the market they’ve been innovative, bringing new features in every new model. They have improved their products in every new step. More importantly, they’ve brought entry level radios to the masses.

  • @glenny314
    @glenny314 2 года назад +1

    I really do like this radio. But man, there are some downsides! I entered thirty plus channels and a majority of the repeaters had the CTCSS tones wrong after the upload. Literally have to click through each channel after the upload to be sure they’re correct. Sure it is nice to program from your phone, but when you have more than thirty or so, it is downright tedious. I use an iPhone 8 and the UI is kinda screwed up…e.g., save button and save titles are obscured. Don’t bother with the iPad version of the programming app…it deserves it’s 1 star rating on the App store. Also, be careful - when editing a channel you will see a ‘clear’ button in the upper left. One might think that will clear the settings for the channel you are editing. Nope. Clears ALL of the channels! Doh! Bluetooth programming is nice, but not reliable or very robust. I’d rather use CHIRP. Still, water resistant, USB charging, good quality (dropped it several times - it’s ok). Nice radio…and nice video btw 😀

They had a card inside saying just email us for a discount code for your next purchase. Okay. I did...then it turns into give us a 5 star reivew and after we approve your 5 star review we send you discount. Bribing me for a 5 star review? That's a company I stay away from. The GS-5B is WAY overpriced for what it is. Chinese junk. Sorry.
