why did this Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fan film never release?
In 2012, a group of fans and filmmakers set out to create a fanfilm based on the popular TV show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. However, the project quickly went off the rails, going from a movie, to episodes, to mini-episodes, and ultimately a film that was never completed. This video tells the story of the failed fanfilm, and explores the reasons why it ultimately failed.

Dont expect jack from fan projects. The ones that get made, and the ones that are good on top of that, are exceptions to the rule amongst exceptions to the rule.

As someone making a film myself, I can see how VFX could cause incredible delays if they were too ambitious with what they wanted Vs the budget they had. Would have been cool to even just have seen it without the VFX and what story they were able to tell. Oh well. Great video though!

@@NicholsonStudios yeah, i fully agree with you, if the VFX team isn't getting paid then your project goes to the bottom of the Project pile. and it almost seems like they were going to rely on a lot of VFX in post. they should have definitely should have pulled a deadpool and dropped everything they had to reenergize the project.

I was a big supporter of this fan film. I couldn't donate money at the time as I was still in college and had a family, but I still had high hopes for it. If it happens, then it happens and I'll watch it...but I'm not holding my breath anymore. If this says anything, Back To The Future IV is more likely to happen than this fan film being released.
I can’t believe I missed out on this. I came into the fandom around Power Rangers Dino charge, and the only fan film that I know of was the one with Brennan Mejia and Ciara Hanna. that one actually was made.
Say what you want about 2017's Power Rangers movie even though the movie was flopped upon released at least we can enjoyed it , I mean its the only Power Rangers movie we got after the Turbo A Power Rangers Movie in a long time

If I could create a Power Ranger Movie. I'd make it so Time Force comes back in time to correct the Timeline but things go screwy and they have to unite various different ranger teams from across the Multiverse. Basically Spiderverse but with the Rangers.
I would definitely make a film based on one of the older ranger teams from super sentai that came before mmpr and we never really got a backstory for. They already have the suits, weapons and zords, so all you need is to come up with a cool story around them. Simplifies things quite a bit.
It would either be that or just coming up with my own original team. Even though this method would take a longer time and more work on designing them.

I can honestly say that I don't feel too bad anymore about the fan films I never got to make, even though they were still in the script stages.

Ever since the Power/Rangers "fan" film made the rounds some years ago.
I realized that gritty, edgy, dark, post apocalyptic Power Rangers is actually the LAST thing I want.
Especially since RPM already did that and it did it with some heart and humor

I remember when those trailers dropped. I was so excited for it. I didn't even think it was a fan film when I saw the news. I thought it was going to be in theaters. And of course when I found out they were making it into episodes, I was still excited. I remember seeing that video of the twins who were playing the Yellow and Pink Rangers who were saying what was the budget they were trying to reach in order to make their project become a reality. Coincidentally, the actress that was playing the Pink Ranger in the fan film was also named Kimberly. I even thought MMPR was a genius title, similar to TMNT. But those trailers/clips were so cool.
Like the one where it shows security footage of a general privately speaking with a scientist about how they need Project Ranger activated because of Zedd being out there somewhere and the scientist says he needs more time to understand alien technology since he's never seen anything like it before. The general says how a war is coming and the scientist asks "What do you want? Five teenagers with attitude?" The general ends the discussion with saying how they need Zordon.
And there was that other found footage they created of a computer engineer saying he stumbled upon highly protected files dealing with Project Ranger and he says that they are trying to create a new team of Power Rangers because of a war is coming. And throughout the video, he is being stalked by the Silver Guardians in which we hear a dog barking, a helicopter circling the building he's in, and him hearing a car pull up before they burst into his room, knock him out, and shut off his camera.
It's a shame we'll never get to see an episode of how much they did finish. But honestly, I would rather have the canceled 6 - 7 movie arc Lionsgate had planned with their 2017 film be put back in motion than having this fan film being put back in motion.
How I would do a PR fans film?
Well I'd create completely new characters and new powers but keep it on the same universe as the show. The powers would be based on supernatural creatures
(Red-Werewolf) (Blue Mermaid) (Yellow Minotaur)
And the villain would be called "Venchence" a 1000yo demon who sole purpose is to cause pain and misery
(most of the world calls him Dracula BTW)
The end would hint at Venchences survival and hint at the recruitment of Pink and Black rangers.

I would try to do one with the GM and fellow players of a Power Rangers Roleplaying Game Campaign I'm a part of based on said campaign, and I all can say about the campaign is it's a more adult take on a Power Rangers version of Chojin Sentai Jetman with elements of Kyukyu Sentai Gogo V/Lightspeed Rescue, Tokumo Sentai Go-Busters/Beast Morphers, and Engine Sentai Go-Onger/RPM thrown in with said GM's permission of course.

From what I have read, that could not be further from the truth. They had gone through pre-production and were ready to start filming but like the day they were set to start some issues came up with SAG that forced them to shut it down. I know they were trying to get them resolved so filming could begin, but no idea what happened with that or if they are still trying. Sometimes projects just fall through and people who invest money lose it, its not a scam, its just what happens in the industry.
I was wondering if you were going to bring up 'The Order' and it's vaper-film status. I've got a signed and graded comic book of it, but it never lived up to the marketing behind it. much like MMPR. and I fear had Jason David not passed away, Legend of the White Dragon wouldn't have seen the light of day, let a lone get a theatrical release even as a 'limited screen run'

I can’t wait to hear what you found out because a few years ago I think it was during the pandemic. I had lined up an interview about it with the Director and he was literally willing to talk about it and then my life started falling apart and I ghosted him . 😂
I remember seeing a list of panels on the PMC 2018 panel schedule thing, and I remember seeing a script reading for “the order“ that film got a script reading at PMC. This one, absolutely nothing Beyond GIFs of the helmet and blue ranger. And delays, tons and tons of delays. Until eventually not happening.
Yeah i knew that it was never going to happen because they've made a bunch of excuses and never going complete this mmpr fanmade series.. so Basically its long forgotten now..

Working on my own one at the moment. Takes place during S1 of MMPR! Like PR, it will utilise 90% new footage with around 10% of footage from MMPR to create a consistency and easily determine to viewers which two episodes the film takes place between. Keep your feelers out for "Project: SHARK".

After this next season.
I think they should do a movie with the original rangers again, BUT have them pass down their powers.
Have a new enemy appear that they cant beat, and have it kill off Jason, Kimberly, and finally Tommy. The villain takes the Gold ranger, Green Ranger, White Ranger, Black Dino Thunder Ranger, and Pink MM Ranger powers.
This alone makes him too strong for the others to defeat. They try but are utterly crushed, and the zords are destroyed in the process as well.
This time they decide to find suitable replacements as they are told by Alpha they need to pass on their powers before they lose theirs as well.
Jasons and Tommys daughters get involved but they dont reviever their powers just yet. Billy just recruits them just in case.
Billy finds a kid that can be smarter than he is, and kind of already is
Zack finds a female ballerina to take his place, as he dances with her and notices her elegant dancing is actually fighting moves
Trinis daughter already has the yellow ranger powers
Rocky gets to know a couragous youngman who stands up for others being picked on at the new high school, and he is also into jujitsu, karate, and other martial arts
Kat wants to honor Tommy and give it to their daughter, but she decides she wants to be like her father, but can't and decides to wait. So Kat goes out and ends up finding a girl that she gets to know at a local shop that is very kind-hearted, but also has some fire to her.
They get to know this kids over the course of a week before introducing them to each other and telling them they chose them to be the new power rangers.
They morph to prove they are the rangers, and tell them that, while they are giving them their powers, they must still be earned,
The new rangers go through a test set up by billy and they fight in a simulation to test their resolve. They pass and are able to morph at the end into the 4 original MMP team.
When they are done Trinis daughter congratulates them and says she is finally on her own team.
The villain attacks the city, and the new rangers are nervous, because if this guy beat the old rangers how can they beat him? Rocky tells them to believe and they they will be here as support in thr command center until they're ready to go on their own.
The 5 rangers set out, but billy is worried because they have no zords, and this is a problem they must fix. Billy calls Adam, Aiesha, who return to help them create new zords for the new team.
After some time Billy creates brand new zords based off the dinosaurs but different species billy picked, more violent dinosaurs to give the zords an edge.
Red ranger = Spinosaurus
Blue ranger = Peliosaurus
Black ranger = Quetzalcoatlus
Yellow Ranger = Velociraptor
Pink Ranger = Therizinosauros

My fan film/anime series would be where Earth was at peace for so many years (a couple 100) the Power Rangers became nothing more then myth and legend. When out of no where an alien force invades. Despite the best attempts Earth was taken over. And humans are now slaves to the invaders. 5 teenagers are on the run from the "police force" for stealing some food. After evading their pursuers they take a moment to rest and eat their spoils. When an Earth quake strikes and the 5 fall down a crevice. They awake they find them self's in a futuristic room. Once they grab their bearings a humanoid figure appears before them explaining where they are. They found a long lost command center for the Power Rangers. Not just one ranger team ALL known ranger teams. The figure then tells them that each ranger team that protected the earth added to the base once their fight was over. Weapons, zords, data it was ALL there. When asked who the being was it revels it's self to be an android of Tommy Oliver and tells the teens the Morphing Grid has chosen them to defend the Earth as the rangers of old did before. After some convincing they agree and are given new powers (a combination of Zeo, Mystic Force and Super Megaforce) and they set out to free the Earth and drive back the invaders. Title TBD I'm leaning towards Power Rangers Legacy as the teens are descendants of past ranger couples. So the power was in their blood the whole time.
I wonder if some of these people ended up working on the who knows when he'll come out power rangers reboot coming to Netflix

If I where to make my own power ranger fan film, Id be like what Este’s idea but I would make it into a shonen anime. Would focus more on fights against the main villains.

i think the whole experience made people reluctant to donate to fan projects because of this. there where other pr fan projects that suffered because of this
It seems kinda sus that the vfx is always the breakpoint. Like they wanted too much for too little, or something.
Still pretty bummed that MMPR never happened, but shit happens. I never actually thought it was scam, overabundance of evidence to prove that wrong, but I get why people were upset. The guy in charge, while again not really scamming anyone, did drop the ball on it and should have been more upfront with information, and yeah, at some point just released what was done. But oh well. Been plenty of other really well done fan projects since then.
Not gonna lie though, the brief plot details we got have been my inspiration for a PR RPG I am planning out.
With 8 years to work on them, those VFX could have been finished with almost no budget. Hell, there are several people within the Power Rangers community who are excellent with visual effects who would have taken that raw footage and rolled with it. I'm one of them. VFX weren't the issue on this. It was their excuse. They ran.

I think that if I was to make my own fan film it’d basically be a sort of remix of mmpr. The base story would be roughly the same but the characters would be as completely different as I could make them.

At the time this was conceived, I was starting/restarting my fan film attempt of Lost Galaxy for 2014. Yes, it was terrible. Before and after my PRLG project came onto the platform, I was bombarded with online harassment from some people for its production value and yes the puppets. I was in my early 20s at this time a decade ago when I got ridiculed. Not only that, I remember being so bitter and jealous of MMPR - this fan thing by Dominic whatshisname and crew - because it was the big talk of the town in the fandom at the time.
As of 2022, I no longer do paper puppets anymore. It was time to grow up.
I had a sequel to PRLG 2014 in 2018 in the form of The Wrath of Trakeena, but... No one cared... And the film underperformed in views so a third film of what was supposed to be a trilogy got canned.
Man, I haven't had much luck doing fan-made movies of Lost Galaxy. The film I was just working on now, another reboot this time part of a.hypothetical cinematic universe, was developed for 6 years. Started filming last summer but I was having alot of major issues with my personal life until this point in 2023. 😢
I have learned some lesson from this MMPR thing that has been dead for a decade now even my own abandoned 2010-11 Rise of Trakeena attempt - Don't hype up a project and expect it to be some awesome badass thing only to end up being a disappointing failure. Also Fan Films are NOT big budget Hollywood movies.
sorry to hear about the harassment you faced, the truth of fan projects is it takes a lot of work, and the more high effects you need, the more money. i remember ur project and thinking how paper puppets were a fun idea, but i can see where others might feel thrown off considering other projects. hope u find a brighter future and keep following ur dreams :)

I'd do a short fan film about lightspeed rescue's titanium ranger where he's on his own for the majority with the new proto-type morphers which would be the power ranger versions of ToQger.

If I could do a MMPR fan film, I would make a Ranger Slayer solo movie. Mostly because as a writer right now, I'm bad with writing multiple main characters. Maybe a origin story and why she changed sides.
Gotta be honest, I didn't read (and don't want to read) the comics, I just played the Battle for the Grid and loved the design.
I mean, given that her origin story and why she changed sides was told in the comics, you might want to actually read them if you wanted to make a movie about the character.
I think Power Rangers should have a tone and feel of Star Wars. It's about aliens, robots, space wizards and witches. Star Wars can be serious but it's obviously known to be lighthearted as well. This is how I see the Power Rangers franchise. It doesnt need to be goofy like the tv show but just entertaining with a good adverturous galactic-based story. The 2017 movie did a great job teasing an interesting backstory of Zordon and Rita, I think any future reboot could also dive into that backstory and do some very interesting Star Wars like world building.

MMPR Origin. Through the stance, story, etc, of Zordon. I would show his initial reasoning for having been put into a crystal coma thing, for a lead in to the first ever episode of Mighty Morphing Power Rangers. Let alone meeting/making Alpha-5. Rita Repulsa obviously has a much deeper lore also so….her team would get a large sub-plot. Leading to the rise of rank for Goldar. Et Al to include a complete retelling of the entire 90s story. In just 1 film.
