- Dig first came together in 1991 when lead singer/guitarist Scott Hackwith, then a video art director, began working on demo tapes on his four-track at home, mostly as a hobby. "When I wrote those first songs for the (1993 RUNT) EP and the first album, I was layering guitars on my four-track," he says. He created the three-guitar attack out of necessity in order to duplicate the layers he'd recorded. "When we went into rehearsal, we started out with me on guitar, a bass player and a drummer, and there was a lot missing, so I added another guitar player."
Fast forward to the winter of 1994: the California rock quintet tantalized the MTV generation with "Believe," the searing modern-rock hit off the group's self-titled Radioactive/MCA debut album. It was an MTV buzz clip for several months and got enough radio airplay to send the album up the Billboard pop albums chart. Taking their show on the road, the band toured with the Flaming Lips, Rage Against the Machine, Goo Goo Dolls, Bad Brains, Blind Melon, Afghan Whigs and Henry Rollins. They wowed TV audiences with appearances on the "Jon Stewart Show," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and in England played live on the BBC and at the Reading Festival. Hackwith was even called to produce the Ramones' ACID EATERS album.
1996 saw the release of the band's second album, DEFENDERS OF THE UNIVERSE. After DEFENDERS, Hackwith returned to his garage studio and began experimenting with a slimmed-down sound. "I held up in the garage in the San Fernando Valley and went to work," says Hackwith. "I started writing not on the guitar but with some vintage keyboards and a drum machine. I was pulling out a lot of old '80s records like Joy Division, Teardrop Explodes and The The. The stuff I was writing was completely different until the guitar layers were added. I was in bliss."
Fast forward yet again to 1998: Hackwith has a recently-completed record, LIFE LIKE, and a new association with Radiouniverse/Universal Records. "I am really proud of this record and can't wait to play the songs live." The band sports a new line-up (along with Hackwith, Jon Morris is the only other member from the original group). Covered in a blanket of typically-textured Dig guitar noise, LIFE LIKE mixes forays into power-pop ("Live In Sound" and "All Over You"), fetching psychedelia ("The Fuzz" and the instrumental "Bus Stopping"), slow-burn rockers ("Stay On the Grass") and moody masterpieces ("Life Like"). Three guitars for one wall of sound? Count me in! 90's, baby!
Wonder if Dig realizes that they r an amazing group and there r lots of fans in their late 30s that would love to see them again.
I am 47 and dug them back then. Great sound. You didn't need to be a teenager to enjoy them.
So proud of my baby brother, the bass guitarist, Phil Friedmann
Much love fam ❤
This bass line is absolutely flawless and has really influenced how I go about writing my own baselines
I was a kid in the 1970s, the 70s were great, but other than that, i miss the early 90s!! After that, everything seemed to have gone to hell.
Back when MTV was worth it all......
High five!
One of my absolute fav bands of all time with headphones and right mood theres nothing else
I totally forgot about this song! What a great find! THANK YOU.
Great guitars - a nice melodic swirl in this one.
Haven't heard this song in 20 years. Still brings it.
my favorite song in spring summer 94 went off to the army and could never find it again. a year later i got to my platoon, and i was trying to describe it to an old dick. he said hold on and went to his room. Came back and gave me the CD!!!!! ( there was no downloading yet and finding one hit wonder cds was not happening) Total score, still in my playlist 25 years later. Damn @Kevin Jianotti
Same here...I went to Ft. Benning in the summer 94 without any real reason to join the military..I remember getting to Ft. Benning and this song would play in my head when I'd get home sick, it was my senior high school year sound track as well.
Just finished posting this on a FB musical group. I discovered it in a pile of cds at a dollar store. Still rocks the f'out!
Yup! I miss the 90's, after that, everything went to hell..
Love this song even more now!
struggled for like 2 weeks trying to remember the name of this band and this song, years later. got to see them in a bar in St petersburg FL back then. absolute brain slamming show. soooo good. thanks for posting this, apparently years ago! was watching some videos about shoegaze.. Dig seems to be shoegaze-y.
I played this every morning at BUD/S.
This riff still blows me away
Reminds me of my high school days in the 90’s. The song is still good as it was then.
DIG is 1 of d early bands that opened doors to '90s Alternative ROCK genre.(1992)
When I 1st heard this song on d radio, I thought it was SAIGON KICK. Because they have d same voice. Until I watched this mv on MTV.(Circa 1992.) \m/
it doesnt matter if they didnt get as big as Nirvana. Great music like these is far better discovered from the rubbles rather than being offered on the pop market
so many memories, that self titled album was great from start to finish
They didnt sell out like nirvana more like eh lol
@@xhellabentx That's a bit of a cheap shot dude. They took 1/4 of the signing deal with Sony to go with Geffen so they could do *whatever* they wanted. No artistic censorship from Geffen. And I don't think he ended his own life bc he "sold out." He was having a hard time dealing with fame.
I really miss 1993.
I was born then, and I now I own a business
@@ongobongo8333 nobody cares about your business.
Literally anyone can own a business.
I had forgotten how great this song was, thanks for posting.
love just about all their songs. the 3 guitat attack is so way cool.
HOLY CRAP! I taped this off the radio once and listened to it so much the tape broke!!!! Bought the CD and listened to that until it got crushed in a cross country move. Haven't heard this song in ages...IT'S STILL AWESOME!
AFTER 23 YEARS I STILL GET A "RUSH" AND GOOSEBUMPS" WHEN I HEAR THIS SONG; COULD HAVE BEEN A BAND FOR THE AGES
SCOTT HACKWITH WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, VULNERABLE SOUL
Saw 'm live at Lowlands festival '93. Those guitars kicked ass!
Fantastic!!!
Blessings to all
Love the bass
Their frontman is my guitar teacher lol
No song ever rocked more
Extremely awesome!!
dammed i miss those years without any worries only get good grades in the school.
THis video has been shadow banned for some reason, you can't find it on youtube under any key words. I had to go to google then do a search and get linked to it from there.
1994 was a good year
Except for Kurt.
they actually followed me on instagram a while ago and i have rlly gotten into their music
I think I listened to this every morning at BUD/S
I'm surprised they let you do that.
Any of their other vidoes on youtube??
Do you have songs from their previous CD? (Defender os the universe) i was looking for that cd and i can't found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =S
These guys were supposed to be the next big thing...what the hell happened to them? I loved them!
Another one hit wonder 90s artist with a classic alternative song that's not found on Spotify :/
@@strangewarmingsof I can't find them.
This whole album was hits dont be ignorant they dont have one single song that isnt good
looked this up cos I recall this being buzzworthy when I was in high school and I thought it sucked back then.... and I still think it does.... blech
Really? What did you like? j/c
@@ryanwood1288 typical grunge kid... this was just one of the songs from back then I disliked greatly
@@badreligionbomb Ah... I know for some of us Metal Heads, "grunge" was a little hard to accept. For some it maybe felt like the end of a golden age. Others were just ready, unbeknownst, for something new and different. I hated Smells Like...., still do. It was like me crossing the River Styxx into the 5th level of Hell. But once I crossed, I liked most of it after that.
Is this supposed to be acceptable audio quality?
Why hasbt someone come up with a decent music video channel or several for tv this world is so fkn bizarre like a nitemare
this was a so-called 'buzzclip' on MTV. thats a good thing - otherwise i would have NEVER heard of this song up to this point. MTV played a few seconds from the 'buzzclips' for a certain week. the catchy chorus, with the wail of "why dont you believe...!" just floored me. mtv used to be fun back then - you sort of swam in an ocean of amazing 90s art, music, and chicanery. its time for a nostalgic revival of the sound, and the spirit, of that decade!
jas22 where you from I'm in Ohio and want to start a band like this I play bass and 🎸 guitar talk to me
look all around your self, try to live in your own special life
why don't you believe?
The open-hearted love of the punk aesthetic has been lost to corporate marketing. Sad.
Why dont we just believe in our own selves?
What the hell ever happened to these guys? I guess they must have gotten screwed by the industry via lack of promotion.
I don't want to sound like a gran pa but the music today sucks I miss the 90's mtv actually played music people were getting out of the 80's and that crappy hair band shit to grunge alternative an awesome time for music
We won't believe in your deception
@jbarph ok ok i'll send you my email address in a message i appreciate that you try to send it to me! THANKS!!!!
I love this song and the band, but they came out at the same time as "NIRVANA" and that changed everything for a lot of bands, NIRVANA kicked a lot of bands into retirement...
Dig actually came to be known around 93 when Nirvana where in a downward spiral due to Kurt's issues. Dig just simply didn't stick around long enough to get a devoted following. They actually were riding the vapor trails of the big grunge bands of the time like the rest of the smaller bands to merge during that era. Grunge blew when i was 12 and i can honestly say that my youth was the greatest time i've experienced in my 34 years.
"Believe" is an amazing track that should have been bigger. And sadly, as good as was Dig's first album, not many songs on it were potential singles, and that could kill an album at a time when MTV was so important. Also, there was so much competition back then, many good bands...
Low rent Oasis
still good sound though
no disrespect intended just not original
Except they came out before Oasis. 🤷🏻♂️
