Getting emotional listening to this gem and reading the comments. 59 years old next month and at times struggle to accept getting old. However, the great music and memories of my younger days make it okay. We were truly gifted with the best music of a generation in the 80s.
This song is about when dating was fashionable an slow songs wer played in discos bring bk the 80s , today's generation will never have the pleasure of knowing such a era
"It's funny how, I could never cry until that night that you passed by, hand In hand with another guy, you're dressed to kill and guess who's dying" 👌🏽👏🏽
I'm 15, this was on my recommended on RUclips (I listen to a lot of oldies). I remembered my dad putting on a tape with this song it to help me go to sleep, when I was 7/8, there were so many good Roxy Music songs on it that I liked, like 'Like a Hurricane' that I'd stay up to listen to them! Great to hear it after so long :)
You have good taste ... sorry for your loss but I hope happy memories. I use to dance to this and it made me think of a past love, the words being very appropriate to me.
The first verse alone is a fabulous little vignette of unrequited love. 'I said it's love, you said "alright" ' , sets it up and 'your're dressed to kill, and guess who's dying ?' delivers the perfect punchline. Amazing lyric. We've all been there !
The guy is full of amazing lyrics. A class of his own, never matched and will be difficult to be matched for a long time. Great lyrics, but Ladytron, In every dreamhome and Mother of PEarl are to my mind in another class alltogether. Ferry knows so well how to play this classy creep, a somewhat disturbed millionair or a hopeless romantic and puts all that in the words so they match all that. Just fantastic. He is a bit like Maradona on the pitch: his topclass work did not last as long as some others (Messi in the case of Maradona and Bowie in the case of FErry). But at his peak no one came anywhere close to his achievements.

Roxy just amazing , just genius just so far away from anyone else , a style untouchable by anyone else but the biggest influence on so many great bands that came after them , a dark disco in 1979 I was 18 and when Dance Away played it was amazing
I love this song for so many reasons. Firstly it’s incredibly poetic and the words resonate. Secondly, I love how for a 1979 song it sounds so 80s but still iconically 70s. Bryan Ferry is a legend! ♥️
The 007 of music. Wow buddy, I couldn’t of put it any better and have been searching for that line for my entire life since Avalon in 83. Well done sir.

Another gem from a band that produced so many. This is a song you just have to dance to, hence the title "Dance Away." Roxy Music have a well-deserved place in the pantheon of Rock Music. So many unforgettable, immortal songs. Well done Bryan, Phil, and the boys.
As the college disco wound down, the DJ would play "Total Control" by the Motels and "I Can't Tell You Why" by the Eagles, and those of us who hadn't made a connection got to watch couples slow dancing. Then to really twist the knife, he would play this song!
This song came out when I was 16 in April 1979, the same month that Dance the Night Away by Van Halen came out. I've absolutely loved both songs ever since. I'm not much of a dancer, but I love great songs... and irony.

Also a band i think were responsible for 'the' greatest cover version of all time,'Jealous guy'. Usually covering another artist's song would come with some trepidation and pressure, but to make the song your own and blow the original out the weeds was just amazing!
Ferry is so cool. Who else could pull off a vibratto like he does and not sound ridiculous? In R&R, no-one dares doing a vibratto, simply because it doesn't go with the genre, but Ferry has always done it with panache and authority, in fact it is, in a sense, his trademark. What a suave dude.

Pure poetry and fantastic music. Loved it in 1979 and love it even more now. And 'loneliness is a crowded room' is a line I often think of on nights out ;)
Tim Jordan - thanks!!! I’m a 100% with you! Here’s my 5 cents: I was lucky enough to see Brian Ferry at a very small live concert in Germany, I’d say less than 1,000 people, with giant earthen owls eminating a scented smoke that, by it’s sweet odor, reminded me of something we used to “fly away” from our daily worries... It was a magic concert... stage catwalking straight into the crowd, Brian close enough to touch him, vibrating with a magical charisma that one would be unable to find these days in any of the so-called “stars”... That concert was pure magic, and I thank the lord on my knees that I was at the right place at the right time back then. My one man web design company that propelled me from the bottom to the top here in Thailand innthe late 90s was called Avalon, that should say it all. I love Roxy Music and Brian Ferry to bits.
