Glenn made a few appearances on the 80's show Miami Vice and this song was featured in an episode... such memories!! He was a great storyteller through his songs!!
A good friend was one of the main writers for Miami Vice, and his stories about it are great!
I believe that Jimmy Buffett played a pilot in the same episode.
This song was not only the theme of that episode, it was the title as well. Glenn Fry played a pilot who was smuggling and trying to get out of the life. It was actually a really good episode. The Miami Vice guest star list is a who's who of Hollywood. Phil Collins, DeBarge, Jimmy Buffet, Willie Nelson, Glenn Fry and that's not even counting the actors before they were stars like Liam Neeson, Bruce Willis, Benicio Del Toro, John Leguizamo etc. etc.
And Phil, of course!
@@diannescearce5734 If he was, it doesn't show upon his IMBD page.
This was one of Glen Frey's best! In fact, there was an old episode of the classic series "Miami Vice" that featured him and had shared the same title as his classic song.
Some of these scenes in the video were from that episode I believe.
I do remember that.
@@JeffSelf No they weren't, It was a music video shoot. The Tv show had a much higher budget and filmed by Michael Mann.
The song was made for the TV show.
He was pretty much the singing voice of "Miami Vice". They used a lot of his songs.
My favorite ex-Eagle song! Don Henley’s Dirty Laundry is a close second though. Please react to that next. Glenn Frey appeared as an actor in the Miami Vice episode “Smuggler’s Blues” as well.
And visit the actual Eagles again please
Good one 😁
I like "All She Wants to do is Dance" as best ex Eagle song...but can't go wrong with any of them.
'The Boys of Summer ", almost time for that one to be relevant again
Henley blocks his music. Good luck.
Oh guys this brings back fond memories of Miami Vice....loved the show and love the song 🕊️💗
Fond memories of Miami Vice. I hear you. But I lived it. Not like they did in Miami but whew...was I around some very heavy drug dealers in the 80s.
RIP Glenn Frey (1948-2016). He had his share of hits, some of which you've heard. (You've not heard "The One You Love", "True Love", or "Soul Searchin'". What surprises me is that you've yet to react to a song by Don Henley, the Eagles' drummer and their other primary vocalist. He had a ton of great hits in the 80s and 90s. I recommend you start with "Dirty Laundry", then go to "The Boys of Summer", "The End of the Innocence", and "Sunset Grill". Anyone agree? FYI - This wasn't from a movie, but Glenn was in an episode of the show "Miami Vice" in the 80s. (Phil Collins was also in an episode of that show.)
Totally agree 💯
I agree, and Don Henley had a number of great hits. "Heart Of The Matter" is my favorite, followed by those 4 songs.
this was commented about before and a couple people said DON HENLEY is EXTREME with his ©️ . . . I had heard that before.
Good choices all. For Don Henley, I would add "All She Wants to do Is Dance."
@@teresajarrell452 Yeah, I've heard that too.
RIP Glenn!! What a great musician!!
Glen was the founder and leader of the Eagles... nothing "former" about it. The band took a 17 year break, and pursued independent careers. Their regrouping came with the album "Hell Freezes Over"... and it was one hell of a come back album! All of the band members each had successful independent careers apart from "Glens band".
Hell Freezes Over Tour was one of the best shows ever!! Everyone sang their own hits then sang the Eagles hits!!
@@Dave-hb7lx was there as well, with a different Dave! Unless this is that Dave, lol.
"A" founder of the Eagles with Don Henley, not "the" founder.
What I think is the coolest part of that story is...The tour was named that because, Don Henley had said in an interview that "The Eagles would get back together when Hell freezes over!"
Yes, I have the CD. Love Glenn he is my favourite Eagles.
"You belong to the city", "The heat is on", "The one you love", "True love"..... RIP
they've reacted to 'city' and 'heat' already
@@surlechapeau I lose track of who's done what....lol
@@2869may me too. I've been real good about seaching RUclips first, this year! lol
The 80s, when music videos felt like they could be movies.
Fun story since you just listened to Jackson Browne. Jackson and Glen lived in same apt bldg and Jackson was writing a song "Take It Easy" but he was having problems finishing it, he was talking to Glen about it and Glen came up with lyrics “Such a fine sight to see, it’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford, slowin’ down to take a look at me.” to finish the song. Jackson gave it to Glen and it was the Eagles 1st single in 1972. Jackson also recorded it in 1973. Here's live version with Eagles, Jackson Browne & Linda Ronstadt: ruclips.net/video/-y2NXDa9970/видео.html
The town of Winslow, Arizona put up a bronze statue of Glenn standing on their downtown corner.
@@elbruces That’s awesome!
Great insight. - Preeesh
Live from the same concert with Linda and Eagles singing Silver Threads and Golden Needles and Desperado are good ones as well. Bernie Leadon and Linda doing acoustic version Guess It Doesn't Matter Anymore too same concert,
I know people who have gone down there just to have their picture taken with that statue!
"cool for 20 hours...pay ya 20 grand" 💯 Miami Vice vibezzzz🤣🤣🤣🤣
Miami Vice TV show was his selection as he was a drug smuggler in the show
I still haven't gotten over his passing
Me too......and it's been over 8 years since his passing 😢 Died in January 2016.
From a great era for Eagles fans with both Glenn Fry and Don Henley in a musical ego battle to see who get the most hit singles as solo artists. ✌️
Henley won by a mile
That was the way it was in Florida in the 1980s. Guys thought they were Miami Vice and the drugs were everywhere. Great song. Video is like a short movie.
Will never forget the Miami Vice episode using this song as the story line..
My brother & sister, if y'all like this one you'll definitely love "YOU BELONG TO THE CITY" the Miami Vice tv show video. Give it a listen y'all!!!! 👊
They did. It's in their library. Feb 8th, 2022.
This is how alot of videos were made this way back then. Love the song and reaction
Take It Easy
Lyin' Eyes
Heartache Tonight
I Can't Tell You Why
New Kid In Town
I don't think Glen Fry has a song that's not a classic. Exceptional musician and singer who penciled hit after hit while in The Eagles and went on to his own career. Another sad loss to the music world. " I Can't Tell You Why" one of the prime example of excellence. Glad you love Glen too. Great reactions. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦
Timothy B. Schmit sang I Can't Tell You Why.
The song "Take it Easy" was co-written with Jackson Browne.
I'm not sure who wrote it but it was bass player Thothy B. Schmidt who sang "I Cant Tell You Why".
@@jackkelly2620 Thanks. Brain cramp. 👍✌️🇨🇦
I'm a sucker for Desperado
I agree that you should check out some of Don Henley's solo records- "Boys of Summer" is good one to start
I agree...plus Joe Walsh did great solo!
He played in an episode of Miami Vice with this song being played
R.I.P. Glenn.
Glenn Frey and Don Henley were the founders of the Eagles and they also have the best solo albums after their break up from the Eagles. Both great song writers. Y'all need to dip into Don Henley. " Boy's of Summer" or " All she wants to do is Dance" are just two greats of many solo's from Don Henley.
I don't know about the best solo careers. Joe Walsh ha a good solo career.
"The Boys of Summer" would be a great one to check out in late Autumn or early September.
Also Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough with Pattie Smyth from Scandal.
@@craigdragseth9272 For real. It's Joe ripping away on guitar here. Co-wrote the song, I believe.
Wife here...Loved the Eagles as well as Glen Frey on his own..I remember him making guest appearences on Miami Vice
Guys,
I've heard it said that Truth is stranger than fiction!!! Glen's Smuggler's Blues is a prime example of that Truth!!! It's based on fact.
The heat is on from Beverly Hills cop
Don Henley (from the Eagles) "Boys of summer" ❤️
Jay: this is just like a movie
(my brain 10 seconds earlier)
OMG this video is like watching a movie…
Loved the solo.
The 80's were the last great decade 👍😘🥰❤️✌️
He was still in the Eagles when he died this was a period when the band was broken up the Eagle were formed by Glen Frey and Don Henley both had hit songs after the break up, and after reforming.
This video is from the 80s TV show Miami Vice... The creator of the show said, let's have a TV cop show like it was produced by MTV... So the music of the time was heavy featured in the show...
Rip to a great Singer & Songwriter Glenn Frey,we still miss you
Hard to hear this song without thinking of TV's Miami Vice. The show was pitched as "MTV Cops" and that was all the network needed to hear. What a great careers Glenn and Don Henley had and what great music. The Eagles' Greatest Hits is the #! bestselling album of all time and it does not even include their Hotel California album hits. Henley then had amazing solo hits.
Glen Frey with the Eagles - Heartache Tonight
Glenn was quite the fine actor. He did a stint on Wiseguy back in the ‘80s in a music industry arc the show featured and was quite impressive in his performance, a real standout.
He also had a short lived tv show called South of Sunset.
You reacted to Glen Fry’s You Belong to the City it was part of the Miami Vice soundtrack. Smuggler’s Blues was about an episode from the ground breaking tv drama about the coolest hippest pair of detectives,James Crockett played by Don Johnson and Ricardo Tubbs played by Phillip Michael Thomas. It was on for 5 seasons and was so good! Each season had its on soundtrack the first tv series to do so. If you didn’t want to be a social outcast back then you had to watch Miami Vice so you could follow the next day’s conversation
You guys gotta do GET OVER IT from The Eagles comeback album Hell freezes over. It really rocks! 🔥🔥🎸🎸 They asked Don Henley in the 80's when will the band get back together and he said "when hell freezes over!" They decided to use that as the name of their comeback album.
YES!! GET OVER IT!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
One of our best song writers, mentored by Jakson Browne, Bob Seger and J.D. Souther
RIP MR GLEN FREY ❣️❣️ WE MISS YOU!!
Pretty sure this came out when Glenn was involved with Miami Vice (80's TV show, not the movie) Always loved to see the long version you watched. Nice choice. Thanks for the Smile
“The one you love” is a must do. Great 🎷 and Glen’s voice, singing from the heart. A song that never gets old
I agree Amber will love the saxophone
The footage in this video comes from Miami Vice, season 1, episode 15, called 'Smuggler's Blues'. Glenn Frey plays a supporting part as a hippie-ish bush pilot who is involved with smuggling drugs in and out of Columbia. Frey wrote the song first, and then the writers fashioned a script based on his lyrics, and gave him a small part.
Miami Vice was one of the first TV shows featuring songs that were currently playing on the radio. They also often had the singers play parts in the show. Phil Collins, Gene Simmons of KISS, Leonard Cohen, Ted Nugent, Little Richard, Willie Nelson, Frank Zappa, James Brown, Miles Davis, Michael Des Barres, Sheena Easton, and Isaac Hayes all had songs used in the show and played small parts in episodes.
Pretty sure this video came out before the Miami Vice episode was filmed. The song is so associated with the TV show everyone always thinks it was written for the show but it was actually from a Frey solo album that came out before Miami Vice became a hit show. He couldn't have written a song more suited for the show if he had tried but he wasn't trying.
Loved Glenn..RIP
Glenn was the airplane pilot in the tv show Miami Vice he also did a Pepsi commercial with Don Johnson using a song
Both Glen Frey and Phil Collins were in the original "Miami Vice" for some eps. That is where I associated "In the air tonight" and the drum solo with driving
My playlist for your next female Friday,. 1, juice Newton- break It to me gently, 2, Little Miss Dynamite Brenda Lee- I'm sorry, 3, Debbie Boone- You light up My Life!!
My favourite Miami Vice episode might be Smugglers Blues starring none other than Glen Fry
Ths is from the Smuggler's Blues episode of Miami Vice. Do yourself a favor and watch it. This song runs through the whole thing, and Glenn Frey was a guest actor in the episode. Watch it.
Love this song. You should also check out Don Henley. Dirty Laundry is great (telling about how newspapers will do anything for a story) and Amber you would love The Heart of the Matter. Such a GOOD song.
Have been enjoying your reaction videos on Bob Seger which led me to this of Glen Frey. Just a sidenote Glen Frey was a guitarist for Seger before forming the Eagles. Also Frey, Henley, and other Eagles members sang background harmonies on several Seger tunes like against the wind. Joe Walsh of the Eagles even plays guitar on several of Segers songs like Till It Shines. Listen and you'll hear their distinctive sounds. Anyway I love watching you enjoying these classics - great music will never die. Thank you
“Part of Me, Part of You” is one of Glenn’s songs that I hope you get around to.
Loved Glenn Frey! Rip! He was in a few shows, good actor. 😔
Cool song!! Try Mason Williams “Classical Gas” from 1968!🤘🔥
I was soooo in love with this song. They actually did an episode of Miami Vice based on this song. They even used some of the lyrics as dialogue in the episode.
You two really need to look at Miami Vice from which this song comes. One of the greatest cop shows ever and all the bangin 80s music in the world. One episode and you'll be hooked!
A very long time ago... I was a smuggler... Glen nails every single aspect of that trade.
again RIP Mr Frey. So sad when an icon passes!
He passed way too soon!
What made the episode of Miami Vice so amazing was this song. Plus, Glen Fry was an good actor. R.I.P. Mr. Fry.
I always think of Miami Vice when I hear this!!!
“The One You Love” is another one to add to your list. You both with like this one! 🎧👍🏾
“the heat is on”
You have just experienced the height of MTV. So many strong film makers came out of that era, where you needed to tell a whole story on screen within the space of a single song.
I got to see The Eagles in concert in 1994 at Old Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ... I was sitting in the upper deck of the Eastern end zone, when Glen Frey sang this song... Before he started it, he made an announcement that he knew people were doing these as he was talking( he was talking about drugs), and pointed up my way, as I was smoking on a big fat joint... Great memories... I still have my ticket stub...❤❤ RIP Glen Frey.😪❤
This is the most accurate song ever written.
Glenn worked for Bob Seger back in 1968 doing some back vocals on Ramblin Gamblin Man and then Bob helped Glen write Heartache Tonight. The two remained friends until Glenn's death
He was so cool in the series Miami Vice. He flew an old Douglas DC-3, and he would haul ANYTHING, legal or illegal, if the price was right. Glenn was in a movie called Let's Get Harry, and I think he was in a Tom Cruise movie called Jerry Maguire. He was in more, but I can't remember them all.
This track doesn’t get enough play on classic rock and roll radio.
That was a cool trip down memory lane! Haven't thought about that video/song in ages. This is a great example of how much videos became such a massive part of music in the 80's. Even if the music itself was really good, everyone wanted a great video as well and artists were tasked to deliver and be as original and talented with the video as they were with the song. Glen Frey & the Eagles were putting out great music way before videos had anything to do with music. A clip of a concert or performing in the studio was as good as it got when they started out, but Joe Walsh, Glen Frey & Don Henley delivered great videos as solo artists in the 80's!
Haven't even thought about this song in at least 30 years...... I forgot howuch I love this song
Best TV drama series ever... Miami Vice!!!
Glen Frey was such a great singer, musician and artist
"The Heat is On" was on the soundtrack for Beverly Hills Cop.
This song is from one of the greatest shows of the 80s, Miami Vice. Really one of the greatest shows of all time...
Don't forget to check out "The One You Love" from Glenn Frey.
Great song! I miss Glen Frey so much! Ya'll need to react to fellow eagle Don Henley too! End of the Innocence, The Boys of Summer, and many more that I can't think of bc I'm sick. Maybe some of you will help me out!
Miami Vice was like an action thriller, on TV, every week. A great cast, amazing guest stars and, an unbeatable soundtrack.
Rip Glenn Frey. He knew a little something about drugs trust me. He was in a drug dealers car who said life in the fast lane and he wrote the song around it
RIP. Legendary musician and pretty good actor, too.
This did become my favorite episode of Miami Vice, which clearly inspired a lot of the movie version. Great stuff.
One of the great songs.
"It's propping up the governments in Columbia and Peru
You ask any DEA man, they'll say 'There's nothing we can do.'"
Great line. Great choice for a reaction.
It's time to legalize.
P.S. Storytelling masters are Harry Chapin and Jim Croce
Glen was playing bass for Bob Seger as a high school kid in Michigan. Moved to L.A. and joined Linda Ronstadts band with Don Henley before the two of them left to form the Eagles...
"You Belong to the City" was also on this album, also featured on a Miami Vice episode the same season, and a top 10 hit. Would be a good "companion listen" as it demonstrates Frey's versatility, as the song has a completely different sound/vibe to Smuggler's Blues.
Glenn was great with the Eagles and did well solo. This is a great tune. As other's have mentioned, Miami Vice memories come flying back.
So glad you got to this one! Definitely a banger. The woman in the video was Glenn's wife at the time. The car he was driving in the beginning of the video was a Volkswagen Thing. (Yes, that's the name of the vehicle. LOL.) Glenn had a rock and roll heart, and you really hear it in this one. This video won Best Concept Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. It was later parlayed into a Miami Vice episode that featured Glenn. He and his songwriting partner Jack Tempchin wrote this one. I had the 45 single, and nearly wore it out. Love the reaction, as always. Peace!
This one’s not a movie, but it is from one of my absolute favorite 80s tv shows, “Miami Vice”! Love it! Glenn Frey was a guest star on it too!
Jack Tempchen wrote this song. Jack showed up at our (my ex and my) apartment at midnight so excited to have us hear the new song he wrote for an episode of Miami Vice to star Glen Frye. Jack and my ex grew up in the same neighborhood in San Diego.
The One You Love and You Belong To The City both great songs by Glenn.
Michigan representing!
You guys should react to Bob Seger - Shakedown. There was a connection between Bob and Glen that went back to the mid/late 1960's (both of them being from Detroit).
Jerry Bruckheimer (another Michigan boy) whom produced Beverly Hills Cop starring Eddie Murphy, used Glen to play The Heat is On for the first BHC movie, and wanted Glen to do Shakedown for the second installment to the movie franchise. However, Glen got sick and lost his voice a few days before he was scheduled to record the song. So he recommended to Jerry to use Bob instead. Jerry agreed and Bob did the song and the song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and rejuvenated Bob's career, which had been slowly sliding since 84 due to record companies believing that his sound had become outdated. I would recommend reacting to both Beverly Hills Cop 1&2. Classic Eddie Murphy movies.
This song was used in the TV series Miami Vice with Don Johnson, Glenn Frey also made a couple of Cameo appearances in this TV series as being exactly that a Smuggler
All She Wants to Do is Dance
Another good song.
Glen Frey was in 3 or 4 shows of Miami Vice and he made about 5 songs for the show and this song was one of them.
Glenn also did "Part of You, Part of Me", which was used in the movie "Thelma and Louise".
"Miami Vice" was a great show in the 80s. There was so many TV breakthroughs made with the show.
That cool little car is a Volkswagen Type 181, also known as The Thing.
My late aunt and uncle had one of them when I was a kid....Soooo cool 😎
The perfect 80's Miami Vice groove.
Frey was a Master singer/songwriter! He ruled the 80's with music and Miami Vice! RIP.
He learned the story telling from one of the best... Bob Seger, they met as teenagers and Glenn sang back up on one of Bobs first big songs... Ramblin Gamblin Man 🙂👍
Can't believe I missed this one last night.. love this song! Love Glenn.. ✌❤🎶
He is a good storyteller i love this song listening to the story then it brings you down to earth as you are listening to his storytelling.
