  • We leave Port Vila and commence our cruise around the islands of Vanuatu. Check out the wreck of the Super Yacht SV Blue Gold in the lagoon of Port Havana. Then we sail to Epi and the islands further north. We also have Lin Pardey aboard Jaygo. Ln is a bit of a legend in sailing circles, having circumnavigated twice with her late husband, in yachts without engines. As per usual, our Amel Super Maramu, Jaygo, performed brilliantly.

It’s a pity the government doesn’t demand the insurance companies remove a wreck like that yacht. Even if it can’t be floated it could be cut up and recycled by local entrepreneurs.

      Hey Jens.
We heard there were major “arguments” between the owners, government, insurance, operators, villagers etc over exactly that. In the end, it is the villagers with the lowest access to resources that get screwed over. Seems typical? The locals, whose reef is destroyed, lose the most.

Small blessing is whilst its a visual mess its a steel hulled boat so will rust away the biggest mess comes from none biodegradable composite hulls like GRP.. they just get ground down to micro plastics and nano plastics.
If they are removed to bury they remain leaching toxic chemicals for 400 yrs plus and still need to be removed from landfills.
Burning is not on, neither is high temp pyrolysis ... and you still have hazardous waste products like glass fibers to deal with.
There are solutions out there and new construction materials can help as a simpler substitute Basalt fiber can be used in place of GRP and to a degree carbon .. add flax, hemp, products and bamboo to the green alternatives list.
Chemically and structurally modified soft wood is on the way....see Metelwood..
These are not just superior materials for building boats or buildings but orders of magnitude better for the environment. From material sourcing, processing and safer use and recovery or disposal points.
Its a bit like the recent arrival of Na ion batteries and the use of sulpher and or Al ...in place of Li Cr Cobalt or other strategic rare metals...
      The local people should be
appointed stewards and given custodial salvage rights with time limits set for responses by local govt ... And commercial interests..
The legal and financial/insurance companies in particular are notorious for
Spinning things out for reasons of none or reduced payments or increasing their earnings on the legal side. 🧙‍♂️🌍

Plenty of valid points there Clive. With regard to local salvage, I don’t believe there is any equipment in Vanuatu capable of salvaging a vessel of this size.

Maybe but dont forget they are the same human beings who crossed the Pacific and who built and moved the Easter island Moia 🗿... and in places like the UK built Stonehenge.
Besides they would soon find they can get hold of salvage bags and dive kit .. they might even get help from an organisation like Greenpeace...to set up a co op.
In kenya the local women used to go out to the reefs a km offshore to collect sponges.. climate change forced the sponges into deeper colder waters so they began harvesting seaweeds.. previously they used two strokes on boats driven by guys .. the cost of fuel and the pollution was making their work impossible.. then the UN and Govt got involved and called in a uk co that makes electrical outboards and supplied them with free standing solar charging frames and flexi ones to provide shade whilst out in the boats . Result .. except for the blokes who just got to drive because they could pull start the motors ... but mostly couldn't fix them. Now the ladies are doing it all themselves if they so feel or the guys been objectionable.
      Thats also why James Wharram
designed and built models of his designs to take to places like Vanuatu..
Besides they can probably salvage a couple of boats each season to get them started.😉
🧙‍♂️ Im an ex rural and environmental science teacher..
Start small work your way up 💪🏼 Co operatives are not new .. they are alive and kicking where
      ever there s a need.

Fair enough. They would need to excavate most of the reef near that village to get this vessel out of there. Certainly not impossible, but a significant challenge. Unfortunately many of these people are only one big cyclone away from oblivion and have more pressing immediate needs. In Vanuatu we donated hammers/nails/bush knives etc to various villages as they are still trying to recover from the previous two cyclones not even a year earlier.
