- Mosul, the third largest city in Iraq, lived under ISIS occupation for three years (2014 - 2017) and was declared as the capital city of the Islamic State. It was liberated by the Iraqi Army in 2017 with assistance from foreign troops, after many months of intense fighting. Years of extremist rule and war has meant that over 5,000 buildings in the old part of Mosul alone were destroyed. In this video, I walk through some of the most badly damaged streets, before seeing some of the more positive developments since the liberation.

It looks so strange when you come from a peaceful country and visit some places completely destroyed by war. It reminds me my first visit in Beirut in Lebanon a couple of years after the end of the civil war. I come from Switzerland 🇨🇭 I strongly appreciate your videos and would like to visit Iraq.

I don’t think I have words suitable for this video. Heartbreaking is one. You’ve done a really great job at respectfully showing and describing what happened here. I can’t imagine the emotions of seeing this in person. I think those of us who live in countries not devastated by war take the peace we live in for granted. Beautifully done. Thank you for this series in Iraq, it’s been eye opening, saddening and beautiful.

It is really difficult to see your country destroyed and you do not have a future and no country accepts you and everyone sees you as a terrorist, I am from Mosul and I am 18 and I have been through 4 wars in my life.

This is an eye opening but difficult video to watch. I could tell that you were getting emotional at around the 5:50 mark. I can't imagine the pain of carrying your dead neighbour. Just heart breaking.

Who gained from all this destruction?!?! it's devastating to see this ancient in ruin. Many innocent lives lost, beautiful old churches destroyed in Mosul and in nearby towns like my birth town Telkaif. Please, if you get a chance try to visit Telkaif. Very painful to see :(. I didn’t realise parts of Mosul was still in ruins. I had thought it would have been rebuilt since then, but of course to rebuild it, you need a lot of money, which Iraq doesn’t really have

If you ever visit Libya you might find a similar situation in Sirte, Gadaafi's home town. It's terrible these ravaged towns are now in such a state...

I often wonder how much assistance you might have in viisitng these places.. How easy would it be for someone white and from the UK now to visit as a solo traveller?
I had a lot of help on this trip thanks to Bil Weekend. Solo in Iraq is doable but checkpoints etc might be a little tricker and time consuming.

It break my heart in thousand pieces to see may city like this. I am Muslim and Sunni but what isis did was not human and also not allowed in islam. My heart hurts when I hear people killed by nothing. They killed not only Christians and ezids, also many Muslim Shiaa and also huge Sunni. They think, that their own thinking is right, and all people in this world can living how they think but it is so wrong. This city had a lot of history and beauty and I can’t believe what they did with my hometown. There are times who I can’t do anything except crying. This country has been through so much. This part of Mosul which is called the old town of Mosul was the most ancient and densely populated part of Iraq. It had a unique history and architecture which was bombed out and destroyed by the coalition forces' airstrikes and iraqi/Iranian militia's ground battles during the “liberation” of the city. It is estimated that 80 % of the city’s infrastructure was bombed.

عندما تم تحرير الموصل تم بسناد قوات التحالف فقط من الجو ام من الارض كان قوات العراقيه بمجمل صنوفها 100\100 التحالف قدمت الدعم الوجستي الإستشارية فقط وبعض الضربات الجويه انتهى ب العديد من الإمدادات العسكريه الى الأعداء بمفارقه عجيبه ولاكن تم تحرير ب ايادي عراقيه الب عرق ودم ودموع العراقيين
