  • The Aiki Dojo 2 Minute Technique - Nikyo Grip Change
In this episode of the Aiki Dojo 2 Minute Technique, David Ito Sensei, Aikido 5th Dan explains the basics of changing from the ikkyo grip to a nikyo grip from ai-hanmi. Generally, there are two ways to change the grip from ikkyo to nikyo. The main reason why we would change grips is because we lose control of our ikkyo hold. This happens because their hand slips out or they pull it out. Regardless, we should know both ways of transitioning our grip from ikkyo to nikyo.

The shift from ikkyo to nikkyo is very useful if uke is resisting and trying not to go down. The drive through the wrist changes the angle.

I guess this video is focusing grip change so the way you are doing would make sense. But why would you release cross hand nkyo to ikkyo situation to begin with? When you are in cross hand grasp, you can just lock into nikyo and keep it all the way to the floor.

Thank you for watching. In the video we do give the rationale. What if you lose the hand as you ikkyo? If this happens, this is how you transition your grip. Hope that makes sense.

In a real confrontation your opponent not going to let you change your grip. They are going to be fighting like hell to get out of it. Especially if they are going nuts on you. You don’t have time to rearrange your grip. To acquire his wrist.

You are totally correct. The main reason we would change is because we lost the ikkyo grip as they fight to get their hand away. Thanks for watching!

The question you should ask is what is nikkyo for? It's a multi function point of leverage that is attempting to break grips and disarm. This is also kata and like you said is not the way it would look in a fight. at the point of losing double arm control arm control there are only two things you can do. One is disengage moving away. Two is move to a position that has good single arm control. A position for example is while holding there elbow with inside hand place your same side elbow yo your knee as you lean into there armpit. Then once you have connection slide your hand from elbow looping under to wrist control. Then once you have this you can reestablish nikkyo.
