Thank you for making this video, it revived the best push mower I have ever owned. The spring on my mower came loose and messed up the pull cord and I did not know how it was suppose to be installed until I saw this video. I bought a new spring, followed this video and the old mower started on the third pull. I like these old mowers that you don't have two handles to mess with and you don't have to restart the mower when you have to stop and move something out of the way. THANK YOU!
DonyBoy without a doubt has the best repair videos i have seen for small engines. Always my go to. Currently resurrecting 3 Lawn Boys this weekend. Been using them since early 70's when i was making beer money as a teen. Now 60 and still going strong with them.
Thank you Donny!!! Had I followed my usual trial and error method I would have wasted 3-4 hours of swearing. Your tutorial was perfect and professional.
Thanx for this. My dad was making me crazy trying to fix his Lawnboy 4500 that he purchased when I was 6 in 1976. Found your video and was able to help him. Thanx again!
I sincerely appreciate how professionally this instructional video was produced. Excellent video of all important aspects of the removal and instillation of the recoil unit. Excellent observations on the key steps involved with the job, and insight on how to actually do the job. Amazing resource for people wanting to work on their own machine.
Thank-you!!!!! Your video gave me new hope on how to fix my lawn mower where I had almost given up. I really appreciate and want to thank you for all the work it took to make. You rock!
Great video. I should have looked at comments before starting because I had the allen screw bolt to remove the unit also. I now see others also had this bolt. Would have saved some time. My bad.
I was looking to find information on the recoil starter for a LawnBoy 10323 mower where it is riveted to the shroud but I always enjoy watching a craftsman at work. Thank you Dony so very much...
Great video, just what I needed to change the starter cord. Instead of a 7/16 nut I had an allen screw to loosen the starter assembly. Once loosened everything went smoothly.
i just bought my first ever older lawn boy 2cycle. how do you figure out what year they are made. got a great deal on it, just had to clean out the carb and tank and clean off the pulley for the self propelled , now it runs like a new one. paid 15 bucks for it.
This was extremely helpful. However, Some people may have a model that has a hex key set screw instead of the 7/16" bolt to hold in the pull cord assembly that was on this model. I believe the correct size for the hex key is 5/32" (I got 4 mm to work). The model I was working on was an 8237 AE.
Thanks for this comment I ran into the same problem, I tried a couple of allen wrenches but they would not work, I'll now buy a 5/32" The Allen wrench set I have goes from a 1/4 to a 7/32" no 5/32", ones' too small the other too large.
Like the video Don.I replaced the rope in my LB 4 square model 6211 here awhile back.Bolt was harder to get to on mine.I also use Liquid wrench. They manufacture it not to far from where i live, only about 60 miles west in a town called Indian Trail,NC.I worked for a John Deere dealer in Monroe,NC that is the town right next to Indian Trail.Thought i would share a little bit of info.Later man.
Hi donyboy73 this is a very good video. I wonder if you have a video on how to properly sharpen a Lawn Mower blade? You probably do, but i just sharpen mine and there is a few steps to follow as well... Thank you again.
Hey Donyboy I have a old lawn boy mower runs great but needs a whole new air fliter cover and filter I need one soon since is my only 2 stroke for long grass
how much does the plastic gear on the starter cost? my neighbors son gave me an old lawnboy and the only problem is that gear. (thanks for this video because without it I would have never found out how to get the pull starter off)
Wonderful video. Thanks Donyboy! I still use my LBoy 7035 (2 cycle oil/gas mix) purchased Oct 1986. Oil leaking from bottom…if anyone knows fix, it would be appreciated. I’m not sure if it’s coming from the muffler or maybe from crankshaft.
Great videos! I have an old lawnboy bricktop that the spring popped off the recoil. would it come off the same as the one you're doing? just learning small engine repair. & any help would be much appreciated.
HI Dony, I have the same lawnboy but the recoil spring broke...I've gotten a new one but I'm not sure how its supposed to be wounded...is it clockwise or counterclockwise?
I have a complete mechanism I am in Ontario I think they are mostly the same. You may also find one on Ebay, or some local repair shop may have one hanging around??
Don, I have an older Model Lawn boy, but the spring gear comes out the same way, only mine has a panel but I think the Gear is worn out..Every time I pull the string it retracts, but doesn't turn the crank because the gears slip.. also about a 10 inch wire fell out as I was loosing the bottom screw. I have no idea how to replace that wire.. don't know how it goes back in.. Flustered because it was running so well before, now it won't crank. :(
Bro, do you know how to remove the height adjuster assembly? It's the part that has the grease fitting on the back wheels. I'm wondering if I need a puller
greta vid don, i have a vid to send you i have an old 11hp briggs the recoil started to sqeel while i was useing mower, the rope jambed in recoil took it apart and off course the spring was all over the place any way ill send to you thanks
Nice work,I've got a rover challenger with there pull cord on the side of the motor just above the fuel talk.Is there any way you can help me change the cord please.
I picked up an old Lawn-Boy and found that the pinion gear for the starter mechanism was broken so I ordered a new one. Rather than two clips, my machine has what looks like a giant safety pin for diapers. It fits around the new pinion gear where there is a groove for it and I made sure it was on either side of a large aluminum piece that sticks out from the entine in order to prevent it from spinning around. My question is, what does this thing do? I realize that it follows the pinion in and out as you pull the rope, but I don't understand what it's there for. Also (and this may be related) the pinion fails to engage the flywheel teeth 4 out of 5 pulls. It moves toward it but stops as soon as it hits it and before the teeth engage.
DONY ! I was given 2 lawnboys from the 70's (I guess) and I need to rebuilt one engine. Do you think it's worth it ? My ditch was about 20º before but, the road has been redone and, they raised it by 6 inches so, I need a working 2 cycles to mow that 45º ditch without any worries. Merçi beaucoup !
Hi Dunyboy, I enjoyed your Lawn-Boy video and appreciate your enthusiasm for it. One question, I have a couple of Lawn-Boy mowers, both are models 7087 with model F-210 engine. do you know anyone that does machine work on these? Say honing or boring and new piston/rings.
What's the recoil doing when it doesn't engage quite right? In other words you pull the rope half way out and it finally catches or it will slip and come all the way out when you pull and nothing happens as far as the engine turning over. It recoils ok but only catches and turns the engine over about half the time when pulling out. Is it the gear not going in and out like it should? I'm afraid I'm going to break the rope sometime but luckily it's long enough and hasn't happened yet.
Good video as usual. Hey Dony your video and audio quality are excellent compared to some of the train wrecks people post up on youtube. One thing is maybe check out wireless mics the kind you clip on to your shirt. These really bring the audio quality to the next level for the amount of narrating you do in your videos. Your videos are top notch all the same.
hey donyboy on most lawnmower engines there is a pipe thingy that leads from the carbuerator to the engine and it has 2 bolts that hold it on what is that pipe thingy called
Great videos! I tried replacing the starter cord on my lawn boy 4570. There was no nut to loosen the assembly for removal & I don't see how to remove it. Are you familiar with this model? Can you offer any advice? I can send photos. Thanks, Howard.
If you are restoring an old Lawn Boy or if it has been rained on or otherwise subjected to moisture, the return spring and the inside of it's housing may be rusted. Lawn Boy says that, after removing the 3 screws, hold the spring housing assembly together. (Hold it together tightly, being aware that the loaded spring is inside. Wear safety goggles.), then drop it on the floor (or ground if you have a concrete floor to prevent damage). This will cause the spring to sprongle safely out of the housing. You can then clean any and all rust from the spring and interior of the housing. Lawn Boy says to apply a light coat of grease to the spring. Put the inner end of the spring in the anchoring channel and put the assembly back together, making sure to have the spring in the slot in the outer edge. Then hold the assembly and wind the worm gear till the spring is fully retracted into the housing and hooked in the slot. Then let spring tension relax. Lawn Boy says not to lube the pinion gear; to leave it dry, but I plan to use dry (teflon) lube on it and the worm gear when I do mine.) Btw, this is a good time to replace the pinion gear if it is worn. And, yes, I said "sprongle" (heh-heh).
donyboy 73 About 6 years ago I tried to get my 1978 Lawn Boy repaired and the repair shop told me that there are no parts available for this older Model. You did not mention parts availability during the repair, there are none as far as I can find out.
Wow.. was this machine one of these new Gold Pros with robotics from Toro ? I notice that this Toro had no push handle.I know.. the guy brought it over in the trunk.
just wanted to say thank you. i picked up an old Lawn boy for $2 and your video helped me to get it back running. Ive enjoyed working on the 2 stroke engine and your vides have helped a lot. do you have a patreon account or anything? thanks again
iv just bought an old mower i think its a lawn boy ill put up a video up on my page could u tell me if it is a lawn boy or not and what year it could be ?? thanks
I have a lawnboy model 10323. When I pull the cord, it doesn't catch until most of the cord has been pulled out. It does not seem to catch as easy. The recoil is under the top shroud, is flat. Any suggestions?
In this video I show you two methods of how to replace the pull cord on your Lawn Boy lawnmower. The first method is to give you a better idea of how the recoil is setup and to give you better access to the recoil.
I have a Model 8310 Lawnboy which is a different model then in the video. I watched the video and got to the point where he pulls out the pull cord mechanism after unscrewing the both underneath (although mine had an allen bolt). However, I tried to pull my models out and it won't budge...any ideas?
Crazy I found one of this at my job I work at scrap yard paid 10 bucks for one like that one and another one with self-pelled and a bag a little bit newer from the early 90s broke ropes definitely definitely using this way. Seeing them just sitting there beautiful machine and very unique design my coworkers were about to crush them I said hell no I would buy them it's good for my lawn care business and also they're very light is what I need my Troy built push mowers are a lot heavier than these lol
I just had an awful time removing the starter assembly on my Lawn Boy. Instead of the 7/16 bolt like yours had mine had an Allen head set screw which was of course stripped out. I ended up chiseling the bolt out. I ended up replacing the Allen with a hex head bolt..

The adjusment wheel that is attached to the rear of carb does not seem to do anything. Where am I going wrong Please??? Gas leaks slowly when sitting.
Great information, but a word of warning to whoever tries to replace one of these pull cords..... Do not remove the very front plate or slide the textured shaft that the gears ride on forward . The actual recoil spring will then pop out and it could hurt you, and drive you insane trying to rewind it.

Rod Gau 👍👍👍👍👏👏👍
Very helpfull videos donyboy. I recently acquired my grandpa's lawnboy collection and will be going through them. These video's will be a big help.
Nice , very well explained video as always.
Those old 2-cycle Lawn Boys are too cool and last forever.
Great video. I should have looked at comments before starting because I had the allen screw bolt to remove the unit also. I now see others also had this bolt. Would have saved some time. My bad.

That is a far superior design to most mowers.
Just want to take the time and thank you for this video. You helped me help someone repair their old Lawn Boy 7264
you're welcome, make sure you are subscribed
Lawn boy build the best resadetal lawn mower..my dad owned one ,he bought in 1970..w rear power drive..best cut ..
I'm trying to find information on replacing the recoil spring. A video for that would be a great help. This one was great!
Thanks a lot man I couldn't figure out how to fix my lawn boy but now I do
Great video, just what I needed to change the starter cord. Instead of a 7/16 nut I had an allen screw to loosen the starter assembly. Once loosened everything went smoothly.
Awesome man, thank you, that spring on the gear kept giving me problems, as I had to start the repair from a box of parts - thank you again!!
This was the only place i found that answered all my questions!! Thank you much!

What's the difference between lithium grease and normal grease
Nice video...keep in mind that they don't recommend grease on the helix, as it attracts grit
recoils on my 5237s have a plastic pulley, not the metal piece with 3 bolts. One had 1/2 in head bolt other had a cap screw with hex
yes
where can i buy parts for this mower, the recoil part is missing the two wires that hold it in place while winding cord
Whats one of these worth are they collectibles? I'm thinking of making a canoe engine out of mine.
i'm not sure what they are worth
Lithium grease works well, here from wikipedia : A grease (lubricant) is a mixture of oil and a soap. The soaps are dispersed into and viscosify oils to form stable gels. Lithium grease adheres well to metal, is non-corrosive, may be used under heavy loads, and exhibits good temperature tolerance. It has a drip temperature of 190° to 220°C (350° to 400°F) and it resists moisture, so it is commonly used as lubricant in household products, as well as in automotive applications,
Do you have an easy way to get the lawn mower off the table?
I just lift it off
Okay I was just wondering I know some can be heavy.
Lawn boys are light.
How to replace the spring on the pull starter of a lawn boy model 5274?
My lawnboy's recoil mechanism is not catching any ideas? Same unit.
There was usually a little rope guide on those starter spring cups to keep the rope in place...It was just tack welded on and has probably fell off...
usually it's the valve cover
I have the identical one the three screws on the starter coil the holes got stripped and i cant get the replacement part because it was discontinued
if the cord is too big it won't retract properly
How do you remove the engine from the deck?Is there a special way to do it?
you will see bolts under the deck
@@donyboy73 Yes but theres a lip.Does the engine seperate from the bottom or do i remove the plastic on top and drop it through?

i am not sure off hand

i dont understand why you took off the fuel line?
