There's nothing quite like the smell of 2 stroke exhaust mixed with grass clippings, mixed with the lightly toasted clippings from the hot underdeck muffler that most pre-1998 Lawn Boy's had. That smell instantly brings me back to childhood growing up in the 90s/'00s in Minnesota, where dad and grandpa were lifelong Lawn Boy owners.

I have a 2-stroke lawn boy from the 70's that I got my hands on in the early 90's when I was a teen. I rebuilt it with my dad and use it to this day. Most younger people have no idea that it's anything significant, most older people pause when they see it because they haven't seen one in forever, and mine runs better than the much newer mowers on my street.

I have always liked the old lawn boys. It brings back a lot of memories for a lot of guys. You can't say that about any other mowers.

I'm using my 3rd one that I got used at an auction 20 years ago. Last week I replaced the crankshaft seals, the ignition module, and the spark plug. I LOVE this mower even though it's 26 years old now--IT LIVES!

Neighbor up the street (Clayton, RIP) used to repair these when I was a kid. He used to let me "test" them by mowing his yard when he was done:) i haven't heard that sound or smelled that LB 2 cycle oil burning in over 20 years.
    I'd love to own one.

I have used Lawnboy's since I was old enough to mow. Currently have 13 and use 5 in rotation weekly. The one you were working on has the metal Walbro carb. You need to adjust the needle to smoothest running by turning it in and then back it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Then adjust the air vane. From no tension it should be about 13 clicks, a good starting point. Should run at 3200 RPM. With the engine off you can reach in to turn the adjusting wheel. Good luck. Bill

Recently picked up my 1st Lawn-Boy, vintage 92. Finally got it running but not well. There aren't many videos about these old mowers. Before watching this video, I didn't even realize that there was a way to adjust the governor/air vane spring tension. I got it running better using trial and error with the spring tension but it still wasn't right. Then I read your comment and followed your instructions, and now it's running way better - THANK YOU BOTH!

I put a small Briggs fuel filter and a fuel shut off valve on my 6.5HP Lawn Boy Duraforce and it has ended my no start issues due to dirt in the carb. I run the gas out at the end of the season to prevent ethanol problems. Must clean the air filter frequently and always soak oil into the foam. I made up a heat shield out of aluminum flashing to keep the heat off the ignition coil during running and especially after shut down. After going through three coils, so far the new OEM one from Germany (red epoxy filled) is lasting. I idle the mower for five minutes before I shut it off to be sure the coil is cooled off as best as possible.

I run these mowers religiously. They were the best ones that ever crossed the face of the planet along with Honda. That other model you have is a steel deck model with a 6.5 Horse Duraforce engine. Since it’s self propelled, it’s probably the model 10323 or the 10324. You can usually find the model and serial numbers on these mowers under the top handle bar or down by the transmission. If you look at the first 2 digits of the serial number, it’ll tell you the year. For example, if the first 2 digits are 93, that means the mower is from 1993. Good video

Nice! Love these F engines with the walbro metal carb. Smooth. Still wish they had a primer though. The spring appeared to be just fine to start with. It's an odd design, and looks funky, but it works. Shame on you running that thing on dirt with no air cleaner. No soup for you. haha! I run a little canned fuel through them at the end of the season for winter storage and the carbs stay immaculate. Stay away from ethanol blends unless you use them daily. But don't let ethanol stay in there. Ethanol kills small engine fuel systems. I pull the plug and spray some fogging oil into the cylinder with the piston bottomed out and give it a couple of pulls to distribute it and spin the plug in finger snug. To start the new season, repeat the fogging oil routine, clean the plug and reinstall. This has stood me well for about 8 years now. FWIW I have about 20 LB 2stroke mowers from the 1960s to the last of the Duraforce models. Great mowers. They do require some TLC though.

I haven't used a Lawnboy since 2006 back when I did lawn care work for a Cemetery and it was a self propelled version not sure what the engine type was. However We did own a 2-Stroke Lawnboy during the mid 1990s and I used that. My one Neighbor still has a lawn boy that looks like the one shown @1:54. Sadly my Lawn boy had pull rope issue where it seized up and it wouldn't move anymore so we ended up junking the mower instead of trying to fix it because it was very fixable.
