- Orange is back with it's fully refreshed Alpine, which has the same silhouette as the outgoing model and retains its lively ride.
Orange unveiled its first bike with the Alpine name back in 2009. It had 160mm of rear-wheel travel and was designed to be burly enough to smash downhill runs yet light enough to ride to the trailheads.
After undergoing a plethora of evolutionary changes, in 2017 the Alpine 160 moniker was dropped to bring it more in line with Orange’s other bikes, and the Alpine 6 was born.
The new name brought with it some impressive refinements and subtle, but important, changes to the bike’s looks. Fast forward to 2019, and Orange is relaunching the Alpine 6 once again with plenty of important evolutionary changes that use the outgoing model as a solid starting point.
Orange claims these changes address some of the previous complaints about the bike and improve the way it rides.

The way I see it, as a UK rider this is what you want, especially with constant bad weather prematurely wearing your components. You're paying for a hand-jigged hand-welded hand-sprayed frame (because why not) that only has 2 pivot bearings, so it's piss easy to get replacement parts (I live a 1-hour train ride away from the factory itself) and it's very unlikely to fail, even after prolonged use, due to its simplicity. And it feels fucking incredible on absolutely any terrain (I use a 2020 Five custom)
Now in contrast, my mate has an NS Snabb (which also looks and rides extremely well), he pulled the head off a pivot bolt. He waited nearly 2 weeks and it cost over £40 for a FULL replacement pivot kit, after speaking to various vendors in the UK and abroad. Which is utter bullshit in my opinion.
Now if I snapped a piece of hardware on my Five, I'd ring the factory, probably pay £10 over the phone and I'd receive it in the mail that same week. Plus they'll re-spray and re-decal your Orange frame however old it is for like £100.
If I see a frame with 10-12 pivot points you can forget it. While no doubt they feel absolutely incredible, all I see is future problems. I guess I'm a purist and I hate dealing with bullshit.
yup. nearly as simple as a hardtail, but as smooth as a full sus. take my money.
Love my Five, been riding one since 2012 and now my eyes have been turned towards Alpine for even more fun times 🤩
I usually think that single pivot bikes are quite ugly but this one is beautiful!

I haven't used a bottle cage since 1988 .
Many years ago i bought a Haro Xtreme and it had the same kind of single pivot .. Loved it at first but few months later my bike did not feel right .. went back to my bike shop and the mechanic tells me that my swing arm is finished :-( .. In these first products Haro did not installed bushings or bearings .. instead they were just installing pin inside a bored hole. So my experience with a single pivot was over .. Haro did not cover their lifetime replacement of my frame .. Instead, the bike shop replaced my frame with a Rocky Mountain Element multi links suspension and what a difference .. almost no kick back when pedaling upward .. This was what i dislike with my single pivot .. Very nice this Orange bike .. I would give it a try for sure .. But a bit expensive lol .. Cheers !!!!
As a Orange Stage 6 owner I know how much fun and fast Orange bikes are ! Date I say but every bit as quick as multi pivot bikes . Looking forward to seeing a MK2 Stage 6. Good review bike Radar

BikeRadar not at all ... enjoy watching your videos and very informative they are . The Stage 6 is a beast of a bike ...it can deal with LaThuile ,Mega Avalanche etc numerous DH tracks and still be fun on Blue trails .

The back wheel isn't going to spray anything on the bottle .the spray from the front wheel will but not the back unless you ride backwards

Amazing bikes and design. Check the anti-squat, pedal kickback, anti-rise, leverage ratio...you can achieve exactly the same with a well-designed single pivot as with more complicated systems.
But you have the advantage of simplicity, durability, reliability…Orange bikes are expensive but totally worth it. For after many years with different bikes (Marin, Kona, Yeti…) there is no other choice for me than Orange, even though I have to save money for longer.. Unless Cannondale came back with a Prophet 29er…that´d be awesome.
That and rear shocks have progressed so much.
Recently demoed an orange (trail bike) not sure if this was the same one, but that thing picked up speed fast! If when I get a second bike, this might be it...
Sweet looking bike. Love the feel of single pivot except that pedal kickback.
So $7500 USD for an aluminum bike with divisive looks. I'll pass.

I like the colour scheme on that one, especially with the factory forks. Shame about the bottle cage underneath but at least it’s an option 😂
Yes, Alex thought the bottle cage placement wasn't ideal. What colour would you go for if you could have anything you like? We thought British Racing Green would look great!
BikeRadar I reckon a gunmetal grey frame with army green logos and accents could look great with the alpine 6's burly aesthetic.
Though british racing green with a few orange accents, like the Aston martin dbr9 gt1, would look super clean too.

@@bikeradar Well you guys maybe heard of the Propain Spindrift, the 2017/18 model had no bottle cage, I just glued one on the downtube. job done ....
Before you ask, it worked from Summer last year till this day with the fidlock system perfect without any drop or any other issue.
Yes , yeah it takes time to master the single pivot type , but damn ive been riding single pivots for 5 years and yes its the best feeling for downhills, especially cornering berms, it just makes roosting berms so much easier and the fact that its really low maintenance with just 2 bearings to change #singlepivotaintdead
Have to see how it rides, but knowing orange it will downhill awesome and you'll look for some low gears on a climb
The day I put a 28t oval chainring on my Orange Five was the best day I've had with it!
I do love an orange, I have to say but I'm not sold on owning one...I kinda think it would be like owning an old porsche 911.
The bottle cage mount is crap, they tend to be quite heavy and single pivot slow bump sensitivity is pants from what I hear about other riders.
Add that the price for an alloy bike (which is justified by it being handmade in the UK) and I'm out.
I absolutely love the look of the bike, and the orange way of life but for me, I would rather own something else.
My trek remedy 8, for example, is a phenomenal bike with great spec for the cost, and you can reach the cage mount. If I was spending orange money, id buy the top spec one of those.
Are you sure that the brake rock is not a loose brake rotor? I had the same issue on my Canyon Spectral and it was driving me crazy, I was already worried there's something wrong with the hub since I thought that I tightened the rotor properly. I checked it again and boom the rotor bolts were a tiny bit loose and that translated to a quite noticeable movement, once I tightened the bolts, no rocking whatsoever!

7:50 you talk about the play in the brake pads when you rock it back and forth with them engaged. This should simply never be done. you don't need to do it, at all. The play in the pads is tolerance for when the heat expands everything. You should know this...
Reading the comments and nobody has acknowledged this. Hope have some of the highest tolerances in the business, they know what they're doing with their brakes...
Someone accidentally skipped the page in the design brief with the bottle cage on it, then stuck it on at the end :) Sounds nice apart from that.

Had a full sus trek the pivots creek like nobodys buisnes. My orange five was a better built bike
It's the mountain bike equivalent of Marmite people either like it or they don't, having an Alpine 160 (2013) I would certainly like to try one. Currently looking to sell said Alpine 160 to get something more up to date and preferably at a lower price point.

The hope also uses floating discs which may add more play.
Hope rotors don't have play, they just let the braking surface expand and shrink, while having lower weight and stay cooler, performance is great i run 160 rear 180 front, noticeable difference between single piece rotors. The rotors won't rattle if they do its a defect, they are also quite quiet I think it's due to the small venting holes evenly spaces instead of huge holes which can lead to flexy rotor and squeezing and screaming braking, like Sram for example.
Always wanted to try me some Hope brakes. I have Shimano XTs and I’m not too much a fan.

Stupid question but doesn't the longer metric shock location change all the geometry? So nothing actually changed other than the shock mount location. Not hating I ride one but I can't see any difference?

@@Sidowse Agreed, they are expensive. However, just because their bikes are "stuck in the 90s" it doesn't mean they are bad. Some people like a BMW with all the latest tech, some people like a 70s muscle car with no power steering. Both are equally valid choices.
I think everybody should own and ride a single pivot bike, as soon as they've migrated up from their hardtails.

Looks so hot! Like blonds i love the simpleness of single pivot bikes! But as for the ride! not up to the current breed of mtbs. The Marin wolf ridge is the opposite so dam ugly but that thing rides so good! I’m just the stick some where in the middle with the brunette next door. She rides good and scrubs up decently.

Except for proud brits or hipsters who buy anything which is different, why would you pay a premium price for a bike which looks like a highschool project. Oversimplified design, ok that at least should be reflected in the price. Linear leverage ratio? So no coil possible for this bike.
I've got Hope tech 3 E4s on my Orange Five and they don't rock like that, seems odd.
I've an orange five 2018. Any setup tips. Sag front rear. Rebound..
I'm struggling with it but keep being told they work best ridden hard.. Fox factory rc front. Factory dpx 2 rear.
65kg rider who's very scared most times out, sketchy steep techy descents in group rides.

@@nathanfagan9881 thanks for the detailed reply. I find I struggle on roots and really step tech as I'm on the brakes. It's so step that you can't really even push back up or walk it. It's hard to let the brakes off as I'll most likely die. Lol.
I've got the rc shock with the lsc and hsc adjustments on top.
Running it open on hsc and about 6 clicks in from open on the lsc to help with diving... 60 psi 2 tokens recommended rebound.
Any tips are always welcome and no need to worry about eggs. Lol

I'm on nearer 100psi on the front but weight wise that works out about right as you're an awful lot lighter than me.
The 2018 has pretty bang up to date geometry so nothing should be letting you down on that front.
I moved from a vastly inferior bike to this one, what did you come from previously?
Single pivot bikes give you more stiffness, less maintenance at cost of brake jack as mentioned previously. People use such adjectives as lively, playful, responsive or describe them as offering positive feedback when riding, but some people just want to switch off and truck on. Roots and certainly steep tech will be a bane if you're braking throughout them. I've noticed that when I can take my brain out of my head and truck it, I get way more from the bike, but when your health is at risk I know it's almost impossible to do.
I broke my collar bone on mine on my first major ride, but it was an innocuous off, front tyre burped off on a vaguely off camber smooth slope. I'm still slowly over coming the bike fear this instilled in me. All I can suggest to you is to do more riding in a smaller group or even solo and progress the safe, fast limits of the bike with you riding it. It's what I've been working on for months
Worth noting by the way that I'm far from a good rider and would barely qualify myself as intermediate at best, but I'd buy another Orange (if the price wasn't bloody ludicrous).

My previous bike which I still own is a Hardtail. It wouldn't handle the woods am currently riding as I feel it's quite rough, tevky and steep. Nasty switch backs. You seriously need to slow down. I'm letting go of the chicken levers when I can but other bits I'm sliding down almost lol... 😂
I get what your saying about the feedback but my legs are dead and I'm not that unfit..

You had to put your seat forward because you don’t really understand geometry but can’t not jump on the latest trends?
And the pads rattle because there has to be a expansion gap for when they get hot seems it’s only sram that have worked out that you can get around this by making the pads a wedge shape but still you should know this. Can’t take anything you say seriously anymore.

Well I think I would prefer the YT Decoy, all the top end parts but a carbon chassis and shimano steps motor to get me back up the hill...no brainer reall,y that Alpine is going to be hard sell even if you like brake jack.
you would prefer that. some people like something made locally with no battery made out of reliable metal that's not going to fall apart if i drop it.
bananas stuff yeah I see that too, but I was just looking at a value for money purchase . Just seems a lot when compared to other bikes. Especially with only single pivot after owning a four bar I would not go back to single pivot again.
Evil bikes use single pivot, Kona use single pivot, commencal use single pivot, Zerode is also single pivot and polygon use single pivot on most of their bikes.... single pivot aint special orange is not special... 😛 *raspberry farting noises*
Shadow Price I like the pop of single pivot bikes . Started on a Cannondale SV2000 then went to Konas. People see multiple links and don’t understand the single pivot design.
and yeti uses single pivot. they use a suspended single pivot design and yeti tries to confuse riders with a fancy name, as switch infinity , but it is just a single pivot. And you are right. I see that the industry is going the single pivot rout again. There is a large amount of models outhere that all use single pivot design.
The more bearings to share the load the better. but orange only has two.

Lecco you haven’t been paying attention have you? Hardly anyone uses camelbacks etc anymore and have gone back to bottles. Personally I still use a camelbak
i'm a kid. i don't want a heavy pack to throw me off balance that i will not fit next year. i run bottle cages. they are also much cheaper.

These bikes are so grossly overpriced in Australia its a joke A$10,700.00 upwards for the Alpine 6 Pro on the Orange Australian website -
What an absolute F*cking joke, when UK websites have it for $4700.00 less - with 200-300 import cost plus 10% GST it will still be $3500.00 cheaper to import.
