      I'm okay with a 9-7 division winner getting in, but 8-8 or 7-9 and the division winner should forfeit their playoff berth.

    everyone brings up the 2010 chargers when this subject comes up. As they should, that season still stings for me with the #1 defense and #1 offense not even making the playoffs. But no one ever brings up the 2005 Chargers. Handed the patriots their worst home loss in the brady belichick era, also ended the colts near perfect season, but a couple fluky charger like losses, on top of forgetting how to play run defense(their speciality at the time) had them missing the playoffs entirely at 9-7. That season stings more than 2010 for me, felt like they really could've ran through the entire AFC that postseason

    • @thatonewriter8043
      @thatonewriter8043 Год назад +1

      Ugh, as someone who loved the players they assembled, '05 and especially 2010 were heartbreaking to me. I never really put my faith in the team enough to count as a "true" Chargers fan, but I let myself get my hopes up both of those seasons. That consistent inconsistency is the madness of the Chargers.
      I'm still so scarred by the experience that I refuse to believe that the Chargers will finish better than a seventh seed, even though my game-by-game projections have them winning the division. Brandon Staley is a good coach, but the spirit of San Diego is going to possess him at some unforeseen crucial point, just like during the Raiders game last year.

    The 1991 Eagles should be up there. An all time great defense that in 2017 was named as the greatest defense of the prior 30 years by Football Outsiders above squads like the 2000 Ravens, the 2002 Bucs, the 2006 Ravens, the 2008 Steelers, the 2013 Seahawks, and the 2015 Broncos. The team couldn't catch a break at quarterback though as Cunningham got hurt week 1. That was a Super Bowl caliber team if he was healthy.

    2019 Dallas cowboys is worth talking about. Similar to the chargers, they had the #1 offense and #11 defense and yet they finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs. The 2 biggest issues that hurt them was how poorly inconsistent Jason Garrett’s and Kellen Moores’s play calling/decision making was and despite the defense being ranked in the top 5 in every category, they were ranked 26th in run defense (the main reason why the defense ranked 11th instead of being ranked higher) meaning they literally couldn’t stop the fucking run to save their lives which lead to them losing games they should’ve easily won such as losing to the bears, jets, and eagles

    How did you miss the 1991 San Francisco 49ers? They won 8 games by at least two touchdowns and didn't lose any games by more than 7 points. The first year without Montana and Steve Young gets injured before he comes back and the 49ers go on an absolute tear. They won their last 6 games, and beat 3 playoff teams in the final 4 weeks. They beat the NFC West champion Saints 38-24 in week 14, the AFC Wild Card Chiefs 28-14 in week 16, and DESTROYED the NFC Wild Card Bears 52-14 in the season finale! They outscored their opponents by 154 points on the season and by 95 points in the season closing 6 game win streak. They were absolutely the best team in football at the end of the season.

    It's such a bad take to say that Bolts team were so good. This "legendary" offense didn't even lead the league in scoring (the Pats were top) and were almost identical to the Eagles (third). Philly scored only 0.2 less points per game and averaged only 6 yards less per game.
    Now, that 2010 Eagles is the Mike Vick, Shady McCoy, DeSean Jackson Eagles - They were a serious offense. And that shows in the stats. And yet no-one talks about them like the Bolts 2010 offense despite near identical stats. Presumably it's because Rivers just threw while Vick generated yards on the ground too. And also because the Eagles made the playoffs.
    Forgetting the Eagles - The Pats score 4.8 more points per game, while gaining less yards. This is the Randy Moss patriots, with Gronk and Hernandez. A serious offence. So what is the difference? Well the Pats just use their drives better, and as a result play ahead and don't have to pushpushpush for every yard every game.
    The Pats score 37 TDs that year to 30 in San Diego, and the Pats require far fewer yards total to create 37 TDs. What's happening? Well, Brady only throws 5 INTs all year, to Rivers' 13. So a big chunk of yards are just being wasted by giving the ball away for free.
    Next, the Pats run ~50 fewer plays to score their points that season, despite Rivers throwing more yards per attempt. That shows a lack of production. They get yards, but they don't score points and they don't play with a lead. They get stuck into close games and so have to just keep snapping the ball when the Pats would just punt it because they are 2 TDs ahead.
    Their special teams gets some flak here, and maybe it is deserved. Some notable give ups do leave the offense in a bit of a hole. But this supposedly legendary offense had a couple of one score games where they had the ball and a chance to drive down and win or tie, and they couldn't do it. They couldn't punch it in.

    NEVER make the playoffs doesn't make sense. It should be MISS the playoffs or NOT make the playoffs.

    It will be impossible moving forward that a “great” team to never make the playoffs in this new format….
    Unless an entire conference is so top heavy, you have two under .500 division champs.
    At that point, a great team ain’t making it regardless.
