    You swipe your card at the pump, and it does a pre-check for an amount determined by the company. Usually, it's something like $150? If your card gets approved, the pump turns on, and you can gas up. Once you hang the handle back up, it sends the actual amount you pumped to the credit company, and the precise amount you spent will be applied to the card. All of that is transparent to the customer - you just wait a few seconds, and the pump turns on. Others have also mentioned you can go into the store and say you want $20 on Pump 9, and the pump will automatically shut off at the pre-paid amount. It's not as complicated as it seems.

      Technically it is prepaid, an amount is held or soft charged on the card, then when you are done pumping, the final amount is updated. You don't see the held amount as pending, but you would see your available balance reduced. A sign on the side of the pump states how much is held, usually $75-$150, it also warns that debit card holds may take some time to release. The pump will stop at the held amount regardless if you have more credit available.

But if we have $10 we can pump $10. My Discover card, I get charged a $76 hold. So I only pay inside with that one. I work at a gas station. So many people don't get this concept and act like we are stealing because the bank places holds. Some banks will charge them even when declines until it clears. I've had that happen just paying in a convenience store when we had a different bank before. The guy ran it four times. We got charged but declined four times. Bank fixed it but it took days and we were on vacation. Kinda made things a little harder with less money for our vacation.

    American here. We prepay for the gas, we call it here, because otherwise people would leave without paying. It used to be pay after years ago before my time. And only one state here, it's actually a law where they can't pump their own gas. Just looked it up as I forgot where and it's New Jersey.
    I grew up with a stovetop kettle. But as an adult I've never been able to find a kettle like the one I had as a kid. But they do exist. The ones I find are expensive for some reason. Probably imported.

So why aren't we tipping the attendant that pumps gas for our convinence? I understand we're not given an option, but still. It's a hotly debated topic amongst locals whenever it comes up. To tip or not to tip the gas attendants?

    American here, worked for a gas station a long time ago... Dealt with a lot of theft issues during the Katrina hurricane. So the idea to pay first is to prevent theft. People point out that you can pay with card or cash and cash is typically cheaper, the reason being is that companies that charge the gas stations a fee for using their credit services, so it's cheaper on the gas station to just take cash than to pay a fee for processing and waiting on card payments. If you know where you're looking for the gas prices, you can guess about how much you want to spend depending if you want to fill your tank, or if you only have enough for the week until your next paycheck you either go in the store and give the clerk the number of the pump you're at, and the price you're putting on it, if you don't pump the entire amount you can come back in for your change (unless you pay with your card it won't matter, you'd do it at the pump), some pumps require you to come into the store to pay prior, this is for theft reasons. The pumps are designed to calculate per gallon how much everything is as it's being pumped. you can clearly read how much you're pumping and the current cost you are pumping into your car, there are people that will pump down to the exact penny and then can pay, but many gas stations have changed away from this option.

I had to actually learn how to do it. Fortunately there was a really nice guy, who taught me how to put gas in my car. But that was such a shocker to me. Now in Canada there is around 50% full serve. Considering how cheap the gas was there, it was worth it.... In Canada, for Birthday's we don't do the hip hip either. But there is the rare celebration, like a sport where we will do it. Here in Germany we have bith systems. The "regular" way to get petrol, during working hours, is you go to the pump, pump your desired amount of gas and then go pay.
    At night, some petrol stations have machines to let you get petrol even if working hours are closed. For those, you insert your bank card, select a max amount of money they are allowed to UR up, ( ex. 80 Euro) and THEN you cna pump. Either your vehicle is full before then and you pay less than 80, or at 80 the pump stops.

    Ok, on the putting water in the mug then microwaving it, usually that's for a single cup or maybe two. We don't see the point in waiting for a whole pot to boil just to have a single cup of tea/hot chocolate/coffee or whatever. But I know some people who have Kurig will run just plain water through to make a single cup

    I’m an American living in America. In the U.S. Army ironically I’m a petroleum supply specialist 😂 when I was stationed in Germany they pump and then pay for it, like you guys do. I swear I’ve always through that we don’t pump and then pay because we suck and people in America would just drive off without paying 🚙💨

  • @sammy3207

    👋 American here, most of us put our card into the machine at the pump first, then it charges us for however much we pump (some states you aren't allowed to pump your own gas, an attendant does it). I own an electric kettle. Still heat my mug in the microwave if I'm feeling lazy 😅 "Happy birthday to you.. And many moreeee"

  • @macdaddy5880
    @macdaddy5880 5 месяцев назад

    We don’t just guess. You just swipe your card and start filling up and the gas pump tells you both how many gallons you’ve put in and how much you’ve spent and it increases in real time. You can fill until full or unlatch the handle to stop pumping at any time when you’ve spent or filled up the amount you want.

    In Canada, we choose a pre authorization amount for fuel, then we pump and whatever amount doesn’t get used from the pre authorized held funds, instantly gets released. If heard in some places of the US, they actually take the money and it can take two days to get the difference refunded. That would stress me out

    • @jenniferwolford4646
      @jenniferwolford4646 Год назад

      Nope, not remotely true. We use our debit card and the exact amount spent, is the only amount held. Our pumps tell you how much you've spent in gallons and dollars.

    • @thecurioustempest6178
      @thecurioustempest6178 Год назад

      @@jenniferwolford4646 It literally says pre authorization amount meaning, you’re giving permission to hold those funds. The point of pre authorizing purchases is to make sure that money is there, BEFORE YOU PUMP, cause uh, it’s preauthorized. Once you finish pumping fuel, the actual amount is charged to your account and the preauth amount is released. You can’t pump fuel, at least in western Canada, without pre authorizing it or prepaying to prevent theft, it’s the law the came into effect a couple years ago. Prepaying isn’t ideal because if you pump less then what you prepaid, the difference is given it back to you in cash. Maybe you don’t understand the context of preauthorized purchases. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Business accounts and large carlock stations for corporates drivers/accounts are different though, if you’re using a company card.

    Americans, most Americans, don't pay for petrol before filling up. We put the card in the machine, or tap or what ever, and it verifies the card is good, then we pump how much we need, then it charges. It doesn't actually charge the card until the pump nozzle is put back on the petrol machine thing. That's how it works.
    By verifying the card is good and getting the card details into the machine before pumping, it stops people from filling up and driving off without paying.

    Late to the party, but I don't see anyone else saying it. To be clear, in American you can get change if you pay too much up front. If you pay $50 cash for gas and you fill up and it's only $42, you just go back inside and ask for the change. If you pay credit you are charged what you fill, you don't select a sum up front unless you want to.

  • @JamesHuggett_

    Not all states have prepaid systems in their gas stations. Any state that has fuel attendants there is a good chance they have a post pay system. So New Jersey or Oregon. There are some gas stations in Oregon that prepay but it's very easy to fill, all you have to do is overshoot the amount you would need when the pumping and the card system will take whatever's been pumped off the card. If cash you are owed change.

And my children all use a kettle as well. Most American prefer coffee over tea so that may be part of it but not all Americans use the microwave to heat water. I would say my microwave is the least used item in my kitchen so much so that I will probably thrift it to someone.

    After the birthday song we’ve always sang “annnnd many morrrrre!” Or “you look like a monkey. And you smell like one too!”
    Also regarding the tea… We had a historical event called the Boston Tea Party where All the tea was dumped in the Harbor to protest Britain and “taxation without representation.” So tea is not a common house hold drink, at least not in the way of yours. USA essentially boycotted tea and drinks coffee.
    I love tea. So don’t get me wrong, it’s a drink we drink. But do I have a kettle? No. The microwave does a faster job and doesn’t take up counter space and need to be plugged in and put away every time I get it out for just my cup of tea because no one else in the House drinks it.
    That is all.
    Ps I don’t drink coffee. Gross.

    Here in America you pay before you pump because too many dishonest people would pump n run. If you have credit/debit card you pump til its full. If you're paying cash you estimate the price per gallon and how many gallons are left in your tank. Then add the cost of how many gallons you need to put in. Pretty simple actually. Or easy way for me is. Knowing how much it costs to fill my tank from empty. Depending on how much you have in your tank, devide that price per gallon

    Petrol: Too many people drive off without paying, stations had to implement paying before pumping. We are really good at calculating how much gas we need and knowing how much money it will take to fill our tanks.
    Kettles: We do use kettles. Those that put the mug in the microwave are savages who crave being burned. Water that has been heated in the microwave has a tendancy to explode unless one puts a stick or something in the mug. (Science, look it up.)
    Happy Birthday: We sing, "And many more!" at the end of Happy Birthday.
    Hope this helps!
