    IMO ducts alone cause so much disruption in airflow down through the support ribs that it changes the flight characteristics dramatically. I have the tomaquad whoopie and iFlight iX2 whoop and both of these came alive with better handling and more power when the ducts were removed. And btw , if a duct is not shaped in a conical fashion, with tight clearance between the prop and inside of duct then it's only serving as a prop guard , or rather a performance killer. But if a duct is designed as intended , then it aids in self stabilization , always wanting to self level, so if you want to go fast, then the proper duct design will fight you .

    I bought one on day one and flew it with a 460mah 4S. No fires thankfully in 4S but You’re right the pendulum effect is nuts! I think it might be a weight problem combined with the ducts like you say. Drove it into the ground on my first power loop because of the pendulum effect and snapped the frame in 2 places. So no, the frame really isn’t that sturdy. Also, only difference I noticed between 3S & 4S was punch out speed. Recovering from dives or powerloops didnt feel any different between the two battery sizes.

    • @Kabab
      @Kabab  6 лет назад +3

      Yeah just super weird flight characteristics. I could not believe how poorly it felt in the air. I'm surprised anyone is defending it and telling me I'm not flying it right....if all I'm supposed to do is hover I don't want to fly it 🙄

    Another great Review Kabab. Guys remember also if you do not plan on posting footage do not spend money on HD whoops. The FPV view through these HD Dvr camera is not great and will likely disappoint you greatly if you donot adjust your goggles to compensate. The FPV view is usually very bright when you have your camera set correctly for recording. Albert has all of the optimal settings in some videos. As I always say Thank you Albert for your hard work there. I will have an 85x non HD V2 up in a couple days so we can see if the esc issue is fixed there as well. It should be of coarse. Again thanks to Kabab for his hard work and if you haven't subscribed to him yet do it now!

    To eliminate the narrow view change the camera format to 4:3.
    For racing try 120fps without dvr recording and adjust the brightness. The video will look amazing in the goggles.

    As a new flyer, and betafpv 75 pro 2 user. Being new, I would think the ducts provide a level of reliability. I crash my 75 frequently and hard and it has been taking a beating (not sure a open prop quad would handle the same abuse?) I think that 85 is on the beginner flying skills/wanting to get into cine quad flying. Sure it isnt going to freestyle great and be snappy and all those other things, but I dont believe that is their target audience. So far I have been happy with their products, and would gladly tell anyone to purchase one.

    Ducts only increase thrust when the gap between the duct and the blade is incredible tiny. The vast majority of quads out there with ducts do not gain any thrust from them. (I believe the shendrones cine whoop had to work on his tolerances for this reason and uses modified props to get extremely tight clearance.
    Also I am almost entirely convinced at this point the main reason the tinyhawk has been my favorite "whoop" in the recent past is because the prop tip turbulance for the most part happens outside the shroud because ia more like a protective shroud than a wannabe duct and there is only obstruction on the less turbulent intake side not on the thrust side

    • @Kabab
      @Kabab  6 лет назад

      Right I have a feeling a lot of that is going on too. The props are actually not totally inside the duct/guard whatever.

    • @m85fpv66
      @m85fpv66 6 лет назад +1

      I’d like to add to this comment that shendrones ducts’ design is not left to chance. Apart from having the small as possible inner gap against the propeller it has conical shape at the top, or what is called “channel wing” principle, which creates a different pressure zones and therefore creating much more thrust than any other just vertical shape ducts.
      I highly recommend Tom Stanton’s video on the subject and his practical approach called channel wing.
      This is to my opinion why Shendrones fly significantly better than any other ducted drone.
      Thanks Bob also for this great and sincere review.

      These aren't ducts, they're prop guards

  • @petedread
    @petedread 6 лет назад

    For ducts to give better thrust and efficiency you need the gap between prop tip and duct to be almost none existent, like less than 1 mm. Efficiency comes from removing the drag at the prop tip.

    @juliejones8785 6 лет назад +1

    Not related specifically to the betafpv, but you made a comment about disturbance of input air vs. output air from the prop. It would be interesting to test the theory that not having anything in the output flow path is better by making one of your frames run with motors below the arms and props on the bottom. The trick is to design some kind of landing gear to keep the props off the ground. (Of course this is easy for ducted props, but I am thinking of 3-5" quads.) It seems like it would also have the benefit of keeping the camera view clear without sticking the camera way out front.

    Being an older newbie to fpv (not rc) I have bought 3 betafpv quads and all of them have issues. The Meteor65 which I love to fly takes multiple arming attempts to get all 4 blades to spin (RDQ is sending me a replacement), the X knight VTX menu locks up every time I tried accessing it then after half a dozen flights the FC burnt (RDQ will be sending me a new one when they get it back in stock) and the Hx100se won't show a menu to change the band or channel. Unfortunately I fly dsmx so my quad choice is limited (I'm open to recommendations). I love flying fpv but given the issues if it wasn't for RDQ customer service I'd probably be bailing on fpv (not a plug for RDQ, I'm nothing more than a customer with no other affiliation - just being honest).

    I notice the props thin down to a narrow tip on the Beta, but Robert's are more "bullnose" style, which extend all the way to fill the inner diameter of the duct. that pendulum effect maybe coming from the way the frame from the center to left and right might kinda angled upward? some of these plastic frames tend to bend up on the left and right like that kind of concave like. also the frame material is great they dont break like ever, but a frame that big is RIGHT at the edge of limit of where these plastic frames and 3d printed frames start to perform crappy... ive got a beta 65 pro2 and its great little thing, the 2s kicks ass. the 1s is great for indoor. and i think these are more for like learning, flying inside with other people or in areas with people and theyre good enough to hold signal and video, good to modify for a longer range little cruiser... the megabee for example is ducted the beta 85x isnt ducted it has prop guards, their so small... but ducts will get more thrust however thats at higher speeds the optimal application for ducted motors is like model jets for alotta physics reasons with highers peed torque neded type thing, the motor needs to match the purpose, you cant duct something setup opposite of ducted and get any reasonable performance from battery etc but if you build for it your motors arent gonna struggle etc... just like high kv motors with high pitch props yes higher pitch gives more thrust BUT.....you get the point.

    I believe that weight is the main culprit here. In micro quad class being several grams heavier or lighter make very noticeable difference in control. From my humble practice 2" quad with weight above 85g already begin to feel weird and above 95g control become noticeably uncomfortable. 116g is a way to much - it will allow slow cruising, but no joy from flying anymore. For 105+g total weight quad must have 3" props with 1105+ motors on at least 3S battery to have fun from it.

    So, this with a glass lens and a Toothpick treatment to run it on the HQ T3x3x3 props would actually make this into something impressive - albeit limited by 3S/450mAh performance.

    Let's be straight forward... This is the same as the TinyLeader! No purpose for it! ... No purpose for ducted prop guards! It's all just marketing! Taking advantage of the who0p craze! 😒
    Just imagine how good this could be with a traditional carbon fiber frame. You say it is a good quad, but you also say it doesn't fly good, has a pendulum effect, and you question its purpose. So, you mean it's good because it comes with good components, not because it's a decent flyer. 🤔 Because a truly good quad does what it was designed to do good - fly awesome! Which this doesn't!
    Let's face it, it's not a who0p, it's a bloated COW! TOO HEAVY, like so many so called fake heavy who0ps... One's that try too hard to put too many features, too heavy of components, making it fly crappy... Like a bloated cow would fly! There's no purpose. Now, transfer all the components onto a carbon fiber frame and I'll bet it's 10 times better!
    Keep those REAL who0ps light and nimble, and manufacturers don't try to do too much! 👍😎🤘

Still makes little sense to me and without the HD it would be total trash. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt but I don't recommend it and highly doubt many will buy it. Not all ducted micro quad duct geometry is the same. The real issue started with the inductrix. The inductrix's was supposed to fly pretty flat which is great for how those ducts were designed. However, people put a cam on it and suddenly flying at 15degrees ruins how those ducts are supposed to draw in laminar air. Since then, many manufactures have just continually destroyed the duct geometry (especially at the top of the duct). Then the manufacturers sold it to consumers under the pretences that they were equivalent and unfortunately consumers bought them without knowing better. Simply put the betafpv 85x does not have ducts, it has bumpers.

    Agreed this is not a fun powerful fast freestyle quad, I have been flying mine ( videos on my channel ) in the garden doing tricks and also filming my dog ( just for practice ) and also down the field to get a feel for this thing, the control issue is odd and I can't fly it very accurately yet but I'm getting better with practice.
    I will be making some video of interesring places in Yorkshire when I go out and about with this though so that could be where this comes into its own maybe, small enough to carry round easily and not big enough to bother people much...

      It'll be soooooo much better if you transferred it to a traditional carbon fiber frame! This isn't a who0p! It flies so weird because it's a BLOATED COW! No worries! Most of the so-called cinewho0ps are that way too! Way too heavy to be on a flexible who0p type frame! Transfer it and watch it soar, be a smooth flyer, have more predictable power, much better handling, and I'll bet... Less jello! 👍 As it is, this is a marketing gimic to take advantage of the who0p craze! They tried to do to much! Made it too heavy, and forgot the #1 rule of who0ps! They need to be light as can be which makes them fast and nimble! They lost the proper power to weight ratio! 🤔😎🤘

      @@scootroter4859 this is simply not a whoop, it is a cinewhoop, it's for filming imho, it can go where a normal carbon frame dare not without any risk and still get hd footage.
      I'm leaving mine as it is for now at least, I think it will make some good videos as it's safe around people etc, if I want a powerful racing freestyle with hd I would just get something else or move all the parts onto carbon frame like you say.
      Love my mobula7 for outside garden etc and proper brushed 65mm whoops for indoors racing and freestyle...
      This is simply not much fun but more a useful tool for showing off hd footage.

      @@FlyingFun. You're right, it's not a who0p! Not close, because those are light as can be and nimble... And this is certainly neither of those! Lol I don't know what it's good for because it doesn't fly well with the pendulum effect, yaw wash out, and overall weird feel when flying.
      So, if it flies weird, has those issues with stability, is it really a worthwhile cine quad? I question... I also have serious doubts about its safety flying around people! It's so heavy, hitting a person with it would definitely hurt bad! Prop guards or not. Unless you're just doing what Bob says it does ok at - hovering! Lol Then, what's the point of a quad that only hovers good?!
      IMO, it's a marketing gimic to get sales from the who0p craze... And it failed. Many broken frames, jello, instability in flight, and burned up ESC's reported. Again, before yours breaks, burns up, or simply craps out on you, like the Toothpick transfers help true who0ps that are light and nimble, I'd transfer this while it's still alive. Maybe make it purposeful and actually fly good! 🤔😃 A carbon fiber frame could probably be had for under $25 !👍

      I've seen some nice videos from cinewhoops and I will be attempting to make similar ones with this, it needs a tune to get it to fly smoother for that though, I think we will see better cinewhoops before long. Like I said I have quads for all other occations like racing freestyle etc so no need to change this to a carbon frame just to duplicate what I already have... Though that is an option for people who buy this and want more performance.

    • @scootroter4859
      @scootroter4859 5 лет назад

      I'm not talking about doing it for more performance, i.e. speed....I'm talking about doing it because it flies like crap! lol I know any quad you take the prop guards off will fly much, much better, so why not improve the way it flies? Because that's the issue with this quad - it doesn't fly good.
      Plus, I think you need to come to grips with two things: 1. It still isn't safe to fly around people with those large motors and that kind of weight. Imagine hitting someone in the head! :(
      2. It's not a who0p! So, get rid of the who0p-ish frame and put it on a frame that will IMPROVE IT'S FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS. ;)

    I find it hard to trust betafpv because of the 85X problems. They made a product, sold it on the promise of 4S, started a bunch of fires (which isn't really funny), then they came out afterwards and said "ok so the 4S quad is now 3S, don't run it like we said you could".
    So next time can they announce a 6S one and then once they sell tons of them say "actually guys this quad is 3S only, don't run a 6S on it"?
    Feels like they are charging their customers for R&D, rather than selling final products.
