- The mangrove forest is a place of amazement both above and below the waterline. Mangroves have the unique ability to live in salt water, and they use their highly specialized roots to filter salt, inhale oxygen, and extract nutrients from an environment that other trees can not tolerate. The world within the tangled mess of mangrove roots is dark, silty, eerie, and wonderful.
In Hawaii, the topic of mangrove ecology is quite controversial. Many people would like to see mangroves removed here as they are not a native species. Check some of these links for more info on this issue. Send us your thoughts on this at our twitter account @underH2Oshow and sound off in the comments below.

Can the pods/propogules/seed of the red mangrove be planted fully submerged prior to it having leaves on it. I’ve heard you can’t fully submerge due to suffocation once they have the leaves. But pre leaf young pod stage can you plant fully submerged???
Thanks for this interesting and informative video.
Mangroves travel and become part of any inviting environment by way of propagules. Propagules form on mangroves as a kind of seed pod that drops off the plant and drifts in ocean currents until they find a compatible environment. Therefore Hawaii cannot say it's invasive. It's a part of nature going where it's suitable. They may be beneficial to the Islands as fish hatcheries, thus increasing the fish populations there.
Ohh good
Fascinating. You have me learning with you doing all the work. Thanks.

I am here because our government official thinks Manila Bay is not suitable to have mangroves as they would rather put Dolomite Sands just for beautification and their own interests. But our State university Maritime Institute otherwise since they have studied through the years what our city really needs for the environment and for the safety our our people.
Imagine if there is a snake crawling in the mangrove tree😀
