I built a river ecosystem for one of the shortest-lived fish species, the annual killifish. I transformed a simple box into a dynamic, dual-section tank that simulates the natural habitat and life cycle of these fascinating fish.
Now I'm sharing with you every step showcasing the process of creation. Watch as the ecosystem comes to life, teeming with plants and fish, as it perfectly replicates their natural environment recreated in a home aquarium.

Disclaimer: There's not actually a "predator" its a shrimp. Also the fish have wood in the tank so the female can rest from the males trying to breed. A problem with buying these fish is they are mostly sold in pairs. ideally it would have been 4+ females. The aim for the video is to show a fish that is not well known and only lives for a short period and that's one of the reasons they are not popular.
Thanks for Watching!
what's the name of the fish again? 😅

A few tips about using spray foam and my experience with it. I’ve found that silicon is a more expensive but overall more effective method of attaching crushed rock and other small bits to the foam. Originally cutting out the foam in the box was extremely smart and made it easy to carve to your liking. However if u were to use spray foam between the gap of the glass and the carved faom box, it would’ve tightly and securely stuck to the glass. Love your videos! There really inspiring and teach me a lot👍
@Tetra.ExoticsThank you! Yes for sure, if I was to recreate this or anyone else wants to. This is the best advice, use silicon instead of spray and I did think about foam down the sides but I had the vision of Sand filled sides and wasn't giving up 😂 but this is not the best method. I couldn't find much information before building this so I hope it helps
Thanks for watching!
Do you mean like a silicon based spray adhesive to attack sand to?
@@AwesomesMan nope. U can get expanding pond foam at ur local lowes. This is what I use to fill in the gaps between the tank. I use black aquarium silicon to attach sand/coco fiber. Make sure u cover the foam completely in silicon befor adding the sand/coco fiber. The firmly press the sand into the silicon so it does not wear or wash off easily.

It was the two little “bruhs” for me to instantly follow. Humor and fun aquascapes 🙂↕️
LOL, I thought the dog was saying "bruh" every time!
These are such a cool fish species! I've never heard of another type of fish who's eggs can survive on land and then hatch in water again!
Brilliant. Was waiting for your next one. Very interesting well done 👍
Suprised this one didnt blow up yet one of the best ecosystem videos ive seen in a while
Must of took ages truly dedicated to all your projects 😊
Hey hey! Just discovered your channel and loved this video. Using the cardboard was very smart, I took a different approach with my latest build and it was a nightmare!
Hello @AquariumShed glad you liked it! I've just watched your cave video and it's a great idea. We find a way in the end 😂
This was awesome! Fresh take on pretty much everything. Well done.
Bro your soooo underrated like seriously
@potattomodesopan Thanks I appreciate it! I remember you from the 1st video too
@@plantbox60 thank you bro and i hope your Chanel become big
Underrated, keep it up!
@tejano1 Appreciate it!
Bro.
Absolutely, amazing video. Great work.
and just like with Dr. Plants, thank you youtube for recommending this video to me. Just subscribed.
Can you try Triops in a shallow Prehistoric paludarium with ferns and moss. Maybe small horsetails.
Aquatic moss and hornwort would also fit the theme.
@commanderhurst3283 I can add that to the list!
Cheers from my fish room channel in Chicago, where I am a subscriber to yours and where i am also in awe of what you built!
When the foam floated... been there buddy hahahaha. Great project though!
@TankitEasySG Haha the plan was for it to be a snug fit when I filled the sides with sand but it was all fun 🤣 Thank you
You’re going to blow up, this was fantastic 🙌🏻
@travistaylorphoto Thank you i appreciate it!
Oh wow! You've gained 8,000 subscribers since your last video!
Love the video man. May this channel grow big. Awesome build
Appreciate it!
Dude this is a very cool tank!! I love the idea behind this❤ I might have to make a tank like this! Love it!
Thank you! I had the idea for killifish 1st and then when I got the idea for the tank it worked out well.
When is your next video @MrHillbilly
excellent work !
this videos script is....something for sure
@unorthodox8552 Thank you
Really nice video!
this video was great. In my opinion, it could have been a bit longer, and you could have gone into more detail, since I fear some people who don't know much about killifish might be confused, Still, I was very happy to see a new upload from you. keep up the great work
Thank you I agree with you, I tried with this one, the story actually was even harder than shown in the video lol the original story was actually back to front with N fuzeri killifish. It just didn't go to plan
Thank you
Oscar winning 🏆 production!
Another amazing video! So underrated ❤
Thank you
Your videos are super cool! For your next, you could possibly try building an ecosystem centered around a bonsai tree.
@Ashyp4aws There's one growing 👀 not a bonsai but something different
@@plantbox60 Awesome! I can’t wait to see it grow into something awesome
Well done, remember me when you reach 1000000!
@KevinandGypsy I will do!
nice video and i LOVE this biotope tank!
Thank you
Thank you
what a brilliant video! your stuff is so bloody entertaining due to a perfect mixture of "going into just enough depth about the tank keeping" and "keeping it a skilfully edited and, wonderfully captured lifespan esc film'. I love this shit so much, Well done and thank you G!
Thank you I appreciate it! Working on part 2 of this
I love your vids!
🙌
Wow I love this build! Now can I recreate it as a first tank.. 👀 I want to use beginner friendly endlers and shrimp though.
Go for it!
Great video!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Bro your underrated❤❤❤
@squiddy5778 Appreciate it bro!
That is why you apply the spray foam directly on the glass or an anchored frame.
I love killifish, I had some rocket killifish (unfortunately due to getting lost in shipping they were quite sickly and I lost my whole school after a few weeks of battling illness)
You really remind me of the red guy from please don't hug me im scared if you don't know that series you can go take a look it's really great and this is an amazing video
@yellow_bud I didn't know what it was but I've just watched it. I think I've seen characters from it before. looks good! massive views as well. Thanks for watching and glad you liked it
Awesome!!
Interesting
Quality 👌
What spray adhesive did you use? Ive only ever used that for flooring but that was toxic for sure.
That seems like a great alternative to the messy silicone ones you see.
Awesome video btw 👌
Im skeptical of how aquarium safe it truly would be. I feel like an aerosol like that could get into the water easily. But i guess there were no shown effects in the video
Dymax scaping spray adhesive can be used. I thought the same so it took some searching! same for foam and silicon used Thank you i appreciate it
@@plantbox60 thanks for the info!
This is cool
A cave interesting
This gives major TanksForNothin vibes.
Not to hate though, inspiration is how you build your base for your own video style
@JoeyTheUnique The editing style is inspiring for sure 👌 this is only my 2nd video (ecosystems) so there's plenty more to learn
Really loved the video, just thought the voice was a bit too loud. But really enjoyed
@calminhIt Thank you I appreciate the feedback, in my 1st video the music was too loud so I tried to lower it this time
Awesome vid, dude! What exact species of killifiah are those, including the smaller fishes that were with them? I may wanna try this out myself sometime.
Thank you they are nothobranchius Guentheri and the smaller fish are lamp eye killifish
yup
Cool man
You could have put the rocks in the foam when you were making it.
Superglue mate. Superglue. If you wanna make sure something stays where it belongs in an aquarium you use superglue.
Super glue would work! I think silicone is the best and cheapest option. If you do it the 1st time round 😂
can someone tell me/guide me on how to make these ecosystems or what their called
Under 10 minutes too
What u clean tank with?
Water changes and add healthy bacteria
This channel is gonna explode like Dr. Plants, and my sorry ass is gonna sit here and be mad, that i didnt start a channel.
Go for it!
What are the plant you have used
Blyxca japonia, few species of cryptocoryne. Eleocstrisharis palustraris tall grass would work great without a lid. water lettuce floating plants
I always worry about my hardscape leaching into the water. Any tips??
@ghko9968 Its the 1st time I've done anything like this so I searched for Fish safe products like dymax spray adhesive. Pond spray foam and aquarium silicone
Nice 'guppy' grotto man! What kind of rock and sand did you use and mix @1:37?
@pvhep4036 lava rock and silica sand
@@plantbox60 Thanks mate!
7:31 is that a bamboo shrimp?
If so I dont think it will live long
They need good flow
They do sift through the sand for food
But it will destroy their fans if done often and they wont be able to eat until their next molt
I know the tank has a filter :)
What is the name of this killi species?
nothobranchius rubripinnis and nothobranchius guentheri. The original plan was Nothobranchius Furzeri but the eggs were not ready to hatch
What fish are those?
Killifish
The actual environment is stinky, muddy puddle with zero visibility and cows walking through it, Besides there are also lung fish in this mess if the pond is big enough. Males are very aggressive. Only thing keep them from killing each other is zero visibility.
Once captured and put in clean water the mayhem starts. Shortly hey lose their fins due to fights. This is real life experience. This particular pond I ham describing is right next railroad station in Massai country. on firt dip with my small seine I've got several hundred fish. Unbelievable sight.

@blockicream2.065 One of the shortest living fish species dies each year in the wild when the water dries out. How do they return, if they are all gone?
