i'm so glad you made this video. this is something that has been making me uncomfortable for years. i have seen a lot of videos, advertisements for courses, facebook posts, blog posts, etc in the digital marketing world and there are so many people and course creators talking about how to get clients with little to no experience. there is a huge amount of advice everywhere about how to get clients, how to get clients, how to get clients... and the other one is, how to raise your rates (even if you barely have experience), how to raise your rates, how to raise your rates... tons of people keep talking about those topics. i see it everywhere. what i see much less of is HOW TO ACTUALLY DO THE JOB. that is not as interesting of a topic, i guess. so it's talked about less. how to get clients and how to raise your rates are much more popular topics. 🙄
if you barely have any experience, but you know how to sell yourself, sweet talk, exaggerate your experience, and convince a client to pay you a high rate, you're just a sleazy salesperson. this is why the concept of "selling" has such a bad reputation. too many people out there are so focused on making the sale, convincing someone to pay them... but actually doing the job and being successful? that's just not the priority.

Is a social media job at a non-profit organization counts as an experience then for me to apply to corporate social media manager? I have an interview this Friday and what I need to know and expect from the differences from corporate social media manager and being a social media manager at a non-profit organization?

Thank you so much for this video. This is the best honest advice I have seen out there on how to gain experience. Thank you for this video! I think it's more realistic to start off practicing your craft as an intern or even doing it for free for your first clients. It is also our responsibility as freelancers to know the basic fundamentals of the service we're offering and not just pitch ourselves as "experts" even though we're clearly still beginners. I'll follow your tip on setting up a 1-month content strategy for one client and even do it for free just to get the hang of social media managing. Great job!

Thank YOU for saying this. I completely agree. Experience and knowledge is super important in any job that you do. Take the time to learn and work with other professionals to get your footing before you just run out there and charge someone a million dollars and "you'll figure it out as you go". It ends up leaving you with a bad reputation and can hurt the business

Yes!!!! While I don’t think college is 100% necessary or accessible for everyone, I did learn a lot through my marketing courses (and courses offered online!) that can’t be learned through a Google search. I see so many RUclips videos giving advice on how to become a SMM with no experience, and most of them recommend just reaching out to businesses and just asking to run their social media. If you don’t know what to do, how to engage, or what insights to look for, it will be hard to get results that benefits the business.

This has been such a refreshing post! I get so frustrated and worried when I see these kinds of posts. You're exactly right it doesn't feel ethical to take on something that your not skilled at, and damages reputation hugely. I'm new to the VA World but have been in the corporate environment for many years and thought yes I've got this social media thing down. Then the more you learn about what is required, how quickly it changes, how strictly you must follow the terms of service for each platform so you don't get the account suspended or deactivated is very important. It is a lot of responsibility as you are dabbling in someone's business. You should also get insurance because if you do something wrong and get their account shut down they might sue! I've been on VA groups with stories of clients accounts getting shut down because the VA accessed it the wrong way etc!

I've been an assistant sales manager doing cashier work and simple planning at a small to mid size business for around 4 years while in college. In terms of social media, I was just doing casual Facebook posts and announcements, telling people about sales and events and such. My college education largely revolved around Graphic Design and so I leaned into that. I made high quality, good looking ads, I put in a lot of legwork reaching out and forming online communities outside of my work within the market my employer is looking to pull from. I am now working with our current Marketing agent who is looking to retire and the owner of the business I work for to move into a position where I'm doing something like half of our social media, and then taking over all of it if things go well. I'm hoping that this will serve as a good first step into a career in digital marketing, I've even started working towards adding a second degree in marketing to my credentials.

I was looking into becoming a social media manager. I'm looking to work for myself..finally. how would you feel about being a social media manager for an entire borough. I live in a metropolitan area that is broken down to smaller "boroughs". I've done some research and notice that each borough has a social media presence (not that great of content) that is usually run by the borough manager. They have a lot of work to do with day to day tasks nevermind posting community (real community, not social media) events. It's not a "results" (sales) driven content. For example: posting info about the annual fair or dinner raffles at the local fire department. I go to the FB page to see updates for garbage pick up. Lol. Basically with several boroughs all close together, I feel like being able to be the social media manager for several boroughs would be feasible. How would you approach the borough manager about having a social media manager for the borough?

Hi Elodie! It's hard to say definitively, but in my experience, the work I've done has been weighted higher than certifications or education. For reference, I am not Blueprint certified or anything like that. I do have the Hubspot Inbound Certification but otherwise just my degree, some courses here and there and lots of books! I've definitely hustled though and have had lots of varied experiences, which I think has helped me stand out for previous jobs.

Thank you so much for this video, I was just needing this kinda content to give me a sort of road map to get started. As far as I understand what I need is the following:
1- Educate myself with some small free basic courses, then some free intermediate courses.
2- Start my own Social Media Marketing Channel via Facebook, Instagram, RUclips, Podcasts, my own Blog, guest post and comment on Facebook Groups for Social Media Marketing, .... as I do that I would need to research, learn and gather more info which would further consolidate my basic knowledge.
3- Pitch myself for 3-5 basic Social Media Marketing projects, via family, friends and some private clients, on a very low budget offer. This would further solidify my knowledge and start to build up my practical experience.
4- Ask for reviews towards the end of those basic projects.
5- Start reaching out for real private clients.
6- Invest in some paid advance short course to be able to improve all round and have the skills set to get better clients.

    This is true.
But from my experience so far, no one is willing to hire someone who has only a high school diploma and very little experience and or someone who doesn’t want to work in retail.
I haven’t really found anything to teach me things that doesn’t cost hundreds or thousands of dollars that I don’t have.
It’s become nearly impossible to apply too when some application sites just make you sign up for calls you don’t even know what they are for-not to mention it’s not even related to the original job description.
It’s becoming infuriating because I literally have no idea how to apply for a job.
And every time I go to apply for a promising job, it says I needs lots of experience I don’t have and can’t get because I don’t have the means to because I can’t get a job to get to that point without going into an insane amount of debt that I don’t want.
Aside from all that frustration I am actually helping out an author I gained a good relationship with through a hobby of mine.
I’m using this to gain some kind of experience.
But even after all this, will anyone want to hire me?
I don’t know…all I can do is do my best and hope I can somehow get something.

I agreed up until 8:00 when you mentioned "portfolio project" (doing things for free). I have some experience with this, and I wonder whether this might actually cheapen your services in the eyes of potential clients. Actually, I am concerned that this cheapens the profession as a whole. Were I to do this, I would probably make some arrangement where I am at least using my services to BARTER for something which the client makes available to me, with some clearly defined stipulations. YOU MUST GET SOMETHING FOR YOUR WORK. I do think that providing social media services for a church would be an excellent way to get your foot in the door. I think a potential client would see that in a different light.

Yeah, I see both sides. My first portfolio projects were my own personal projects + an internship (paid, but very little).

My ig is doing well which is cool but vanity metrics arent the end all be all, bc im not getting any clients despite my following, and all my smm mutuals who i occasionally chat to have like 200 followers and multiple clients. I kinda give up already lol

Nooo, don't give up!!! Fellow smm here! I'm actually almost giving up cause my own social isn't even doing well. Lol. But i pivoted my focus into working for free so I'd meet new problems and know my way of solving it for my futute clients. I'm glad i did it. Creating a package now and will start pitching people. Good luck to you!!

I’m a SM Marketing professional + dabble in managing teams and doing their marketing. You need experience. A lot of the people you’re comparing yourself to have clients but don’t get paid much, if anything at all. So it’s easy to get clients if you take on 4 at $400/month before taxes. When you go high ticket (and actually make enough to leave your FT job), it’s a different story. Getting booked out is really hard for small business owners with their agencies. So don’t feel bad - get an internship to get valuable working experience and structure. Your first business may or may not fail and that’s okay.

I wish I had run into your channel before I purchased this course that was totally thrown together except the intro video. 😕. The course I purchased literally is telling me to bs my way into a job because everyone lies 🥺
I just graduated in media broadcast and I have been trying to get an entry level job or internship in a marketing and advertising agency. I am struggling.

@@mrskia247 i had a bachelor's degree, but it was in art studies, so it wasn't related to my acadium apprenticeship. my apprenticeship was mostly about writing social media captions and blog posts. before my apprenticeship, i had done a few quick, low-paying writing and proofreading jobs on upwork. so yeah i had barely any experience, but at least i had done SOMETHING to actually show that i had an interest in writing.
if you want to do an acadium apprenticeship, you don't need a degree or a lot of experience. i suggest having something that shows that you genuinely have an interest in the type of apprenticeship you want. (example: if you're trying to be a video editor, edit some videos by yourself for fun. if you want to be a social media manager, make your own social media graphics).

The title is clickbait - "Can you become a social media manager with no experience?" Coz the answer to that is a yes of course. Of course, no job that one does with "no experience" would give you a six-figure overnight. It requires dedication and consistency at work! The content is insightful though

  • @nickzema4200

Can someone make 6 figures with no experience? Sure.
Anyone who says, "You can make a 6 figure income with no experience, buy my course." Is trying to get you into their sales funnel.
