Truly one of the classics. It made my top five for the best giant monster movies.
The Monsterverse needs to touch this. Venus was probably devoured by Ghidorah
That's like listing the top 5 menu items at the worst restaurant in town.
One of my favorite things about this monster is the roar. It sounds more like a scared screech than a monstrous roar
Ah yes, arguably the most famous American monster movie (to ignore the giant gorilla for just a second). This movie seems to pop up everywhere-from references to clips to even inspiring the character in Rampage-and of course at the head of all that is a monster. Ymir, compared to other monsters of the time like the ants in Them! and the Deadly Mantis, is ridiculously expressive. He wears the role of tragic monster well, and while there may be films that arguably do it better (like Rodan from the previous year), it does the tragedy aspect quite well on its own. Like many of the monsters from this time, I wish Ymir would get some more attention, as it has a great movie.

I'd argue even Rodan didn't have near as much development (after all, Rodan only showed up fairly late in, though granted with a fantastic end). Easily both in the top tier of kaiju films in the time, regardless.
You've been there?
@@rahlohmcdonogh4855 Yeah, pretty nice place, once you get over all the storms and Graikis trying to kill you
Probably wanted to evoke the the aura of fame and box-office success of "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" several years earlier.
The fight with the elephant is truly classic,
I saw this movie during its original theatrical run... Was 6 years old and the scene where the Ymir attacks in the barn scared the hell outta me. That's how convincing RH's effects were at the time.
It's hard to say but I'm pretty sure this is my favorite 50s American monster movie
I think it is mine too
Same
Apparently, the creature's original design was that of a giant cyclops with goat hooves and legs (a design that Ray Harryhausen would use in the 7th voyage of Sinbad) and it was originally going to be set in Chicago.
Interesting fact! You can see the similarities between the two creature designs, so I wondered what exact connection they had.
The puppet for Ymir was actually reused to make the giant cyclops from 7th voyage of Sinbad.
Ray was just getting started but everything he will eventually be known for is in evidence here ... the detail work that gives the creature some vulnerability and elicits sympathy is just amazing. The Ymir was in many ways Ray's Kong. Big hulking creature that is killed for not fitting in.
Ray also reused most of the frame from Ymir for the Cyclops in "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad."
HHHAAAAA CALLED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my all time favorites!!! Absolutely love the Ymir.
Monster movies of the fifties are iconic!
This is a Ymir from the planet Venus. Its diet is sulfur, and it's docile to the point that it literally wouldn't harm a lamb. That is, unless you poke it.
And what do dogs and humans insist on doing?
That's correct. They poke it.
We keep poking it and it keeps rampaging! Maybe we should keep poking it?
@@Sierlea Nah, you should direct all of the troops to stand directly under where the Ymir is throwing rocks.....that sounds like an even better idea!
This should be a Monsterverse movie. A creature from a planet that was devoured by Ghidorah. Monarch would test on it and you know the rest
@@rickyrackey7930 I really like that idea
People in Movies do Stupid Things because otherwise the Plot wouldn't happen.
My favorite Harryhausen.
This is one of the greatest Monster/Sci-Fi Films EVER made.
The Ymir is as personable as Mighty Joe Young. Well, almost. Joe rescues children. The Ymir is just a confused and lonely creature in an alien world not his own. Ray Harryhausen is THE MAN.
Please do the rest of the Harryhausen films
I love this movie. It's easily my favorite Harryhausen creature from it's design down to it's personality. And like you said it moves at a wonderful pace and you never feel bored.
I love Ray Harryhausen’s work!
me too man
I wish I could see that one! Specially for the fight with the elephant scene!
Ymir inspired Lizzie from rampage
I'M SO AMAZED AT HOW LIFE LIKE THE CREATURE IS.
Aw yea, best of the Harryhausen kaiju films! One of the very first kaiju with real personality, and the Italian setting was a nice change. Love this one.
Awesome monster! My 3rd favorite Ray film, incredible stop motion in this one!
Another childhood classic and one of Harryhausen's finest creations.
One of my favorites when I was a kid in the 60's. It was shown a few times on Sunrise Theater on Saturday mornings in eastern NC.
Thank you so much for bringing the Ray Harryhausen movies to your channel. People need to know.
I always loved this movie-the creature design is incredible.
Saw this as a kid & DEFINITLEY sympathized (with almost cried for) the monster! Much like I did for Kong!
& is it me... or does William Hopper remind anyone else of Montgomery Clift in this flic???
One of my fav ray harryhausen movies!
As a kid I was mesmerized by it although I felt bad for the elephant.lots of action and well paced, good story and you have to feel bad for the creature.
I would give this movie a 8/10
0:01 me at 3:00 am trying to wake my parents
Ray Harryhausen was a genius !
Harryhausen is always a win!
I "watched" this last night while building my new PC. It's solid 50s monster shlock with good effects. They had trouble keeping the monsters scale though.
Scale probably was tricky, especially since the monster is continually growing throughout the film, making for different size ratios every few scenes 🤔
I usually draw while listening to these reviews, but while watching this one I would frequently get distracted by how the alien creature moved. It moves in a way that actually feels physical, like it has weight and mass and an impact on the world around it. Despite obviously being a model, it feels real, which is more than I can say for most CGI I see today. (Not that CGI is bad per se, I'm just less impressed by it than I am by practical effects and the like) Also the elephant that showed up briefly was so good I mistook it for an actual elephant for a hot second.
As always, your reviews continues to be brilliant. Every time your videos appear in my queue, they're an immediate auto-click. Thanks for all your great work.
Hn ymir dosent really look like an alien it looks more like an old creature from a time before humans existed
Stop motion has also evolved a lot from The Lost World to super smooth and fluid films like Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, which are so fluid that they almost look like CGI at some points.
I really hope stop motion visual effects return in live action films but with the newer quality and fluidity of Laika’s films.
The way I remember this movie is 1. The kaiju, who’s name is Ymir, in design roar and movement, 2. The fight between Ymir and that elephant, and 3. The whole comparisons that was made between this and King Kong
Wow I'm surprised I've never heard of this one! Fantastic stop motion aside the creatures design is also outstanding and pretty original given the other American monsters of the 50s. Can't wait to check it out. Thanks as always for the awesome content UFTD 👍
You are in for a treat!
Loved this movie as a kid, I did however felt sorry for the monster !😥good movie.👍🙂
This was a very good film. You could see throughout the film how terrified the creature was, during the battle with the elephant you could tell it did not want to fight it, but the elephant hated the creature nonetheless. I easily could have seen the creature be defeated by the elephant if the elephant would have been able to stomp it.
Made me a stop motion fan (esp giant monsters) from the first moment I saw the Ymir for the very first time.
I just watched this movie and I love it because it is like a Godzilla movie and a Kong movie come together in the best of ways. It’s a Kong story with the emotional depth of his movies, with the monster being more like Godzilla as a mostly indestructible lizard that destroyed the city and fought the military more.
One if my all time favs. Thanks.
Please review Valley of Gwangi! Love your channel content. Kaiju stories are my favorite guilty pleasure as of late.
I felt sorry for this monster.
Fun fact: In the arcade classic, Rampage, the character Lizzie is actually based on this monster.
Best 50s monster movie ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my favorite monster movies, but in one scene--inside the barn, it becomes illogical. Minutes before this scene, it pulled apart metal bars and broke out of an iron cage. Thus, trying to put it inside a farmer's cart that is made of wooden bars and wooden slats and a wooden roof makes no sense.
0:03 I love how that commander's expression is less abject horror to the 20 ft reptile in front of him and moreso the same expression you'd give upon seeing a person break down in public 😂
These were great at a Drive-in!
One of my favourite old monster movies!!! Try get on DVD in colour
I certainly remember the lead male character of this film being very aggressive and pushy. But that's okay we got a great monster.
I felt his acting was terrible
Yea, I didn't like him but he didn't dominate too much. That character archetype was too common in the era (the guy from It Came from Beneath the Sea was even worse- the ones in Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and The Giant Claw, a step up).
Well Hello.....Almost a Doctor! 😏
The stop motion animation in this movie is a million times more interesting than the bland, faceless CGI we have today.
Depends
@Officer Murphy Thats the best way to put it now we just need a way to fuse the best of both
The level of craftmanship is key- like it's not just that it's stop motion, but Harryhausen's deft touch with it. Some can manage with CGI, but a lot don't.
Yawn. Educate yourself.
I agree! A lost art form!
This one's been on my list for a while
Could you imagine signing on a 12 picture deal withone company!?
I hope Neca gets the rights to make a figure of this guy
It's the Earth's oxygen that makes the Ymir grow enormous.
Fun fact, yamir was the main inspiration for lizzie from the arcade game Rampage.
Thats some good effects 2:25
Can you look at The Giant Behemoth⚡🐉1959
Can you look at The Giant Gila Monster🦎
2:33 Poor elephant ;(
every time i see your name, up from the depths, i sing the song in the baritone.
This movie is amazing! Not only that but the monster itself is very impressive. In fact the Ymir is my favorite Harryhausen creature. It’s story is very tragic similar to King Kong. Still it’s a great movie!
Man, I remember watching this on the DVD 4-movie set I had. Really impressive stop-motion animation. By the way, are you planning on reviewing the film, The X from Outer Space?
The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is a Parody of This Movie, You Can Spot Many (or Some) Parodied Scenes Throughout the Film
4 stars = Good.
You should look at REPTILICUS! The world's only Danish monster flick.
"Reptilicus" is the 1st Giant Monster movie I ever saw!
My god look at that animation, at that time?
I grew up on these movies and I do love them. Special effects are better but the stories now are less somehow
This was great on the old Creature Double feature. Was a Saturday afternoon seies back in the 70's. Here in the Boston area. Great way for a kid to spend an afternoon. By the way want some nice Godzilla models? Check out your local Target store. I found 3...the 1954 model, Tokyo SOS and Godzilla vs. Mothra version. Way Cool!
Its a very solid monster design, but considering who designed it. It's not really a surprise.
At some point, I'd like it if the elephant could win against the monster.
Given what we know about elephants nowadays, I would have liked it if the elephant was actually a 'mentor/comfort animal' for the Ymir. Elephants are smart enough to be trained to interact with other critters. I would have liked if it was first introduced with the Ymir when it was still 'man sized' and it would 'work' in help keeping the Ymir 'pacified' even as it grew ever larger.
No review of Earth vs the Flying Saucers ?
It a fun movie with a good cast.
And It Harryhausen .
That should be enough for you to review it.
The Original Independence Day.
The movie monster Lizzie from Rampage is based off of
Can you look at Beginning Of The End💀🦗1957
Cool
watched this on TCM...The poor creature was abducted by aliens for goodness sake
and taken 20 million miles from his home ... we would fight too.
BTW Ray never called his creations monsters ... they were creatures
Love u man ur the best
Paul Drake vs. the Ymir as I sometimes like to refer to this movie!
Yes! Godzilla had Perry Mason and the Ymir had Paul "effen" Drake!!!!
20 million miles to Earth really good movie I like it
I feel like I have seen this movie before, seeing all of these clips. Huh.
I feel more sorry for Jumbo than I do for the Hulk Hogan lookalike lizard.
I own it but i wish it was filmed in color
There's a Colorized Version.
Can you look at THEM!🐜1954
Would love to see Legendary films bring the Ymir Creture into the Monsterverse,
What do we think about as a new sequel of 20 Million Miles to Earth movie remake. Just like Godzilla: King of the Monster, and Godzilla vs Kong. What do you think, anyone?
Cannot be kept from being ruined.
And the monster's name Ymir was also the one from AOT
please do Valley of Gwanji.
Can you look at The Monster From Crater Lake🗻☄
Great David Allen animation!
Where can I find this movie on yt?
You can't, so go rent it
Can you make a review on them!?
It's coming, I'm sure of it. If you want a straight answer, ask him on the stream tomorrow!
As a kid I loved this movie it’s was a Greta movie and was only limited by the technology of its time
Felt sorry for ymir....
It sounds like shreck
It sounds cute but it’s scary
just like kong it fell to its demise
Will you be doing Clash of the Titans???
I saw this as a geeky kid, just having been shoved into a new school where I felt persecuted by everyone, even the teachers. Boy did I feel for the creature. ( Only years later heard it was called the Ymir.)
