seeing this gorgeous liner in color brings a tear in my eye. Knowing that shes the final ship build for her company and now shes going to be broken up. RIP Britannic III
My great-grandfather served in WW2, stationed in England, and the Britannic was the troopship that took him there. In a small way, this ship which safely delivered one of my ancestors is why I'm here today. This video truly marks the end of an era, the last departure of a White Star Line ship. And while she was scrapped long before I was born, I'm happy to say that I have a personal connection to the last White Star liner.
Still crazy to see just how short those funnels were! Thanks for the post, my Dad came to Canada on the Georgic back in 1952, I will show this to him :)
Amazing footage...sailing into the twilight.... Still powered by her original double acting four stroke engines ( with blast injection ) 31 years old at that time....
This is absolutely incredible footage, I knew her final departure from Liverpool was filmed in color, but not New York! Very surprising amount of footage too, with how much color footage costed back then it's surprising they filmed her for so long here.
@@Clashenavios It definitely is real color, color photos taken the same day confirm the same funnel color, as well as the fact that it looks way too realistic to be colorized, I don't think even professional companies could get it to look this natural lol
@@oceaniccolorizations I don't know, I'm still in doubt. In the color photos of the Olympic, for example, if you look closely, you can see the salmon-colored color on the chimneys.
@@Clashenavios I mean this is 30 years after those photos, i'm sure Cunard didn't make it a priority to paint her funnels the exact right color when she's going off to the scrappers. There's no doubt in my mind that it's real color, i've been working with and researching film like this for years.
@@oceaniccolorizations We never know how the colour perceived by the human eye/brain compares to the actual colour. I mean, I ever thought that main mast and foremast were painted the same colour, but looking at this footage, it appears that the foremast is the same buff as the funnels, while the main mast is brownish (like the bulwark around the bridge roof), as I'd expect from what we know WSL masts had been painted when Titanic etc. was around, 48 years earlier...
Queen Mary’s last voyage from bye was a lot different then the Britannic’s not only because you would see the Queen Mary in California but it just feels so different for Britannic. Almost like it is from a different era. Cunard Line didn’t take to much care of Britannic because you can see the rust on. What an amazing ship. You will be missed Britannic 3
Ships do rust. They sit in water all the time and are made of metal. This is her last voyage, no need to spend unnecessary money on paint. The ship was going to the scrapyard. Yes Cunard did priorize the Queens over WS modest ships. She still had a fruitful career, this was just the end of it.
The Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC-8 had already taken flight ferrying passengers all over the world, the Soviets were putting stuff on the moon, Television was already a thing and computers were taking foot. And she was still sailing.
My old man was crew on this (and the Georgic and many others) during the war when they were troopships and repatriating POW's., war brides etc. I've got lots of ephemara from the ships. The last of The White Star liners. My dad took me down the pier head when it ( and all the rest, sadly) made their final voyages and we went on board. Ace vid mate , great memories cheers.
She was a fine old ship. I remember seeing her at Prince's Landing Stage in Liverpool as a child, as I waited for my dad to arrive back from New York, probably from the same pier as Brittanic sailed from, i.e. Pier 90. He was crew on Cunard's Carinthia, Caronia and Sylvania and also did numerous trips in the old Queen Mary.
When you look at this ship it’s hard to forget that it was launch only 17 years after Titanic and that crew that worked on her may have worked on this ship.
That White Star burgee you can BARELY make out on the mainmast at 3:10? I own it today. It's just a few feet from me right now, packaged in my bedroom.
Ocean Liner from the past look better than any ocean liner today. Britannic looked amazing! the stacked life boats came around because of the Titanic sinking.
Yes imagine the creature comforts of a 14 day cruise in steerage class, wined and dined in the restaurant, swim in pools, try your luck at the casino or sit at a bar and drink draft beer 🎉
The thing that always confused me about Britannic and Georgic, was that they are Motor Vessels, yet had steam whistles, seems a little uneconomic to me to include a boiler just for a whistle, so, what did they do?
@@jamescrawford9883 Highly doubt that, seeing as you can see steam coming out, and even still, air doesn't expand as much as steam, so it wouldn't be sounding right, just look at the Queen Mary sounding it's horns on air vs steam
@@wilfstor3078 I am an ex seaman and was on a lot of motor ships. Not quite sure how the whistles work but was never aware of steam on any motor ships I was on.
There are things in life that should be preserved and kept around. These are the modern day equivalent to the ancient treasures of long ago. Preserve our modern day technology. This was a time period of opulence and sheer beauty. I don't like how this gets destroyed. If I was a zillionaire this would be my garage of Ocean Liners. Let's preserve our achievements. This is our heritage like the old buildings on land that should be valued and well kept. I would rebuild all of those great ships to exact specs of original design.I value our heritage and history! I really enjoyed this video. Thank you.
So sad White Star was so successful but lose two if there Olympic class ship get there Superliner cancelled Wish you where still here White Star Line White Star Line 1845-1950
It's sad that her sistership the MV Georgic didn't serve the north atlantic service with her after the war i think if she's didn't bombed in ww2 , and if the giant RMMV Oceanic (and probably a sistership) built and sail the Atlantic maybe until the mid 1960s the last four White Star Line ships sail in the united Cunard White Star Line along with the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, and their smaller versions the Mauretania 2 (and a sistership to her the Lusitania 2 but in the style of the Queen Mary with three funnels) along with the other beautiful Cunard Liners , but it's just my opinion 🤷♂️.

MV Britannic was actually the second-to-last ship built for the White Star Line. The very last was the MV Georgic.

Hmhs Britannia
I wish she was preserved
but love the footage of my Favorite white star ship
Honestly, she was the last of the white star lines fleet.
And honestly I think she should’ve been preserved.
Pretty lines . . . always sad to see an old girl go to the breakers.
So nice to see this, and my 1/1250 model sits on the computer ----such a graceful ship, the epitome of art deco style.

Yea, they added that in. Originally a silent film so fake noise

The film was originally silent. I added in the sounds separately.
