That's what I always thought then I went on my first cruise a few weeks ago. The Carnival Elation. She is an older ship from the 90s. But I really appreciated everything more than I thought I would. I havent been on any other ships. And many of them nowadays aren't the most beautiful ships. But for what they are i can appreciate it. Wish we had more older looking ships but he. Some newer ships look good to me. Instead of those pure boxes from the 2000s. Streamlining seems to be coming back. I'm not saying all modern ships are cool. But some of them have a soul to me.
The closest anything comes to the classic ocean liner these days is the Disney fleet. The most art deco design I've ever seen on a ship younger than 80.
I wanted to be richer than ever to afford to rebuild, restore these ocean queens to their former glory as floating ocean hotels, and berthed for selection to stay. Many passengers felt safe and happy. It would take a few trillion to pull it off, but move in an ocean liner, and keep your cabin.. when its time to sail, she sails everywhere to raise funds for up keep. Yet, sell various size model kits, instructions, motors ect. 1/5, 1/10, 1/15, 1/20 ect scale replica ships of White Star, Cunard... Yet have a massive fleet of these Grand Ladies as operational museums.
Yeah, peoples “taste” in what they want their ships to be have changed, mostly due to the fact that airliners have taken over the golden age of ocean liners. Nonetheless cruise ships are still works of human art in their own ways.
Never dissapointed with your videos. You focus on an age that in todays world is being long forgotten! And thats a crying shame. The footage and images in this piece of film are exceptional! Beautiful little ship. Always was a big fan of Britannic and Georgic. On her last crossing to New York one of her engines suffered from a damaged crankshaft. Cunard then decided to retire the aging ship. It was a crime they scrapped her.
it isint a crime goergic was scrapped cause no body wants to buy her as Cunard already set her for sale so they sold her instead to the breakers and britannic broke a propeller shaft and cant be repaired so they sold her to the breakers.
I love how after the merger Cunard Line scraped 90% of the White Star Fleet while keeping their own fleet intact! Even the extremely old and dated Aquitania!
Not really because Cunard may have made it out the depression but it was not un scaved as they also lost a chunk of there fleet due to them being money pits just like those of the 90% of white star ships
A great video. My great-grandfather sailed aboard the Britannic during World War II. He was a radio operator in England, and he sailed there on the Britannic, which was part of a convoy. He mentioned that he despised the food that was served aboard, and said that it was literally rotten. However, he found a shop on-board that was selling candy, and, in his words, he lived off of candy for the entire crossing. He probably should have crossed in peacetime, if he wanted good food, as Cunard-White Star definitely wouldn't have served rotten food.
I just discovered that my Mother came to the U.S. as an Irish immigrant on the Britannic's very first crossing to NY from Cobh after its post WWII refit. I have a picture of her (from a Cork newspaper dated May 24, 1948) on the tender at Cobh with other passengers headed out to board the ship. Interesting history for this ship.

I own the White Star burgee from this BRITANNIC (or what is alleged to be the BRITANNIC's burgee); I bought it many years ago from a reputable dealer who claimed he had obtained it from a sailor on the QE2 who told him it was from the BRITANNIC. Now, of course, that doesn't PROVE it's authentic, but if it's a fake they did a damn good job of making it look real.
I’ve not travelled much but I’ve always wondered why passengers would want to travel in a cooped up in a jet for 9 hours risking blood clots and unruly passengers when they could travel like THAT! I know there is still the Queen Mary II. But still not popular as I would have thought. And sailing across on a cruise ship I would imagine has its own issues. But going on an ocean liner would be my preferred way. Guess I just don’t understand modern travel🤷♂️
I love the britannic and the georgic, absolute works of art as all white star liners. But im wondering why they didnt just construct the oceanic. Both georgic and britannic where over 700 ft long, and im sure together cost a pretty penny to build. So why didnt they just combine them and make one big liner?
Well let me explain: They WANTED to build Oceanic. That was the original plan. Georgic would have never existed, instead it would have been Oceanic and another similar liner (Think QE & QM and Mauretania). But britannic had already been completed when financial problems arose with oceanic (the great depression had just begun), which had just begun construction. Britannic was very well received and enjoyed lots of success for the time period, but most importantly: She was VERY economical to run. Oceanic was scrapped, but to save the 100000 already spent on her design, Georgic utilised a very similar design (Britannic used a unique design).
its because of the collapse of a major mail company in england where wsl somehow relies and before that, the oceanic was already planned and already had the keel but somehow because of the situation and financial problems, the ship was scrapped and wsl decided to build the britannic and the georgic instead as for replacement, and if you notice both ship has a little resemblance from oceanic.
I do not understand British shipbuilders. Both twins s/s Britannic and s/s Georgic built already in an atmosphere of the 1930’s modern ship design still wore the old ugly hull look. Both were externally old-fashioned and ugly. Compare them with the Italian Conte di Savoia and French Normandie, which were designed about the same time.
Ships today are just floating theme parks. Ships back then were works of art that had a "soul" to them. Never forget them! 🔖

Georgic was built from her hull, Britannic had metal allotted to her and was intended as a smaller fleetmate before it was cancelled.
