Bit unrelated to the video, but I had the idea last night that Mitchell's hatred of Freeman would make more sense if he was in a position like Adrian - did not get the orders to kill the science team. Then if it showed Freeman killing the group of marines we see in the first level, he would be from the point of view that he was dropped in with no orders and a mad scientist was brutally murdering the rescue team. Could have kept Freeman as the one who nearly killed Big Mitch, not Adam randomly finding an HEV suit.
That would mean, among other things, completely changing the first level to one of HL1's locations. I mean, the room where Big Mitch's getting his face fucked up is unlike anything we've seen in HL1. When do you suppose they'll get around to having cutscenes actually be choreographed and rendered in-game instead of FMVs, though? To me, those FMVs should be used sparingly like how Valve did with HL2 EP2 ("Our story thus far...") and Portal 2's endings in singleplayer and co-op.
While in-game cutscenes would be much faithful to the source material (Half-Life), I think the FMV cutscenes have become a staple of this game. At this point I'd rather just see them make new FMVs and carry on the weird and wacky vibe they always carried.

to think that HDTF, one of, if not the worst game on the market is getting its redemption arc, makes me hopeful for the future of games. i hope the devs of the m3sa builds aren't overworking themselves, but i'm still super happy that we're slowly getting the game that we deserved all those years ago
@@darkdwarf007 the developer ruined the game, not the other way around, and pretty much left it like that, that's why the game gets a redemption arc and not the dev
@@Cappuccino_Rabbit But unlike No Man's Sky, HDTF didn't earn millions when it released and instead was actually around an estimated hundred thousand dollars or more in debt to the investors and the investors weren't happy. If Berkan got the kind of money no man sky made, not only would HDTF probably be polished to perfection but we would likely also have HDTF 2 by now.
The game actually has two endings that you have a 50/50 chance of getting from the forest map. You picked the new new ending, the other is the house ending that was originally going to be in the game, but was cut because it was a bought level from the csgo workshop.
I appreciate the work you and your team are trying to put in to fix this mess. I still remember you flat out lying and doing damage control PR before the game's release, but you're clearly trying to redeem yourself for that.
They shouldn't fix the story, it's a perfect trainwreck and is the real reason I want the gameplay to be enjoyable. They could definitely improve audio mixing in cutscenes tho.
this is actually hideo kojima cut of hunt down the freeman, that was hidden from the public. this version got streamlined into retail hdtf, but the ideas and concepts remained and were eventually turned into death stranding ! what a story !
I have this weird interest in HDTF. Even though the game is bad, I actually enjoy the story in a bizarre way. I'm interested to see how this improves more and more. I heard there were some redone voice lines, so maybe they could find a way to edit those in? I think some of the maps look better, but maybe could have some extra details added here and there. Right now it feels like they're trying to get the general gameplay fixed first before doing major visual overhauls, but the ones they did do are leagues better.
@OctoOOZ There’s nothing funny about Sonic and Elise’s awkward relationship. Also there’s a section of the story that is… actually good, unlike with HDTF.
It's really nice to see that some people actually care and want to fix or improve it. Heh... i never thought this game would make me say this, but i can't wait to see more!
They went from not having any level design at all to actually having one, but it still doesn't change the cringe worthy story, and while the levels are more evenly paced now, I still can't shake the feeling that I'm playing a shit game
With these improvements though, it's turning into playing "The Room" instead of being completely shit though, from the sound of it. I for one am quite curious on what they're going to be improving upon later down the line, when they have spent what they needed to overhaul the gameplay itself, and are now working on visuals and the story itself
I still think one of the most important things is to put back in a PCV. The HECU has the HEV suit equivalent in the PCV, which is why the Marines were so tough in the first place. And it's also confirmed that regular Combine Soldiers and Metrocops wear them. Plus... there's no reason Mitchell shouldn't have one. It'd make the gameplay more like actual Half-life instead of CoD.
Two things that I think could be done for more improvement on this mod is to try and reimplement the train section in a way that actually makes it *good* and not just a random gunship shooting gallery, perhaps by maybe having it like some kind of chase by the combine with them deploying enemies onto the train with drop ships, and to make the section at the end where Mitch has to hold out have the helicopter actually show up and have the player get inside it as the combine make one last big wave, sorta like the finales in Left 4 Dead. But yea, I’m actually impressed people want to fix this game. It gives me a lot more confidence in the modding community than I already had.
In-game "cutscenes" would benefit the game a lot, as it's one of the key factors for immersion in the Half-Life series. Letting the player move around while everyone's talking seriously can be fun, too.
There is an axe in original, it lays on the ground or in one of the garages after you exit power plant during motocycle/auto escort thing. No one sane would actually find it I guess, except some folk like me who just happen to get vehicle stuck during that stuff or smth like that.
To be honest, while watching this video, my eyes literally shone with happiness, and a smile appeared on my face, and did not disappear until the very end. I was one of those people who bought HDTF almost on the day of its release, was the one who played this broken piece of code. I've seen M3SA's attempts to fix the game before, but these changes didn't seem like much to me. Now, I realize how wrong I was. I sincerely appreciate this person, and all members of his team for trying to fix this game, because at the time of purchase, I was so excited that I literally hoped that this would be the best mod for HALF LIFE 2. I am overcome with pride for this community, and I just hope that M3SA and his team manage to change history so that HDTF inherits the fate of NO MAN'S SKY. I'm not gonna lie, I was one of those people who left a comment about you not playing the updated build but in my defense I had no idea what you meant by "M3SA" build hahahaha. Thank you for making this!
Make HDTF great again! P.S. If You remember the HDTF Demo, it's most likely to add that chapter to main story. Yup, with another models, dialogues, but add. And thanx for the hard work.
I 💕💕 love M3SA Build 😋 it makes the game 🎮 so much better ☺️ the levels are actually fun to play through, 😏 and the finished cutscenes are an awesome addition 😎 glad to see the original work being utilized 😼 not only that but the discord community is so sweet ☺️ God bless you and God bless Hunt Down the freeman.
At the train station, you have to wait near the train car which has some loose parts where you can peak into the interior. Then a soldier comes and starts to open it. You wait some more and defend him while he opens it and get in to proceed. It took a while in my run for colonel to notice it and give the order but it definitely is there.
Something like this reminds me of something like Project 06 (The Sonic 2006 fan remake headed by ChaosX). While something like the story is something that will unfortunately have zero to no difference compared to the original, at least cleaning up the gameplay to something that isn't a confusing and/or frustrating mess of disappointments at every corner is already a massive win. Always great when an otherwise heavily panned game at least gets some time to shine as a game many can unironically like playing. Hats off to the devs for their hard work already on this project, I look forward to the final release.
I love how they manages to make the worst part of the game into a somewhat enjoyable experience and making it more than just a mish mash of trial and error within the deepest circle of hell
This is just the perfect display of what happens when you have people that care in charge of a project. Sure they didn't change the story and all but they pretty much made every level prettier and better game design wise, actually had careful thought put into the parkour mechanics to make them not just be a novelty thing and with the resources they had they added that one cutscene near the Joe level
Wow I have heard in one of the first reviews of hunt down the freeman that some of the Devs wanted to fix the game but didn't think anything would come of it. Glad it has, heck once its finished I might even buy it and flick some $$$ to the team that fixed it.
8:48 The room here that you skipped actually has a new scene where someone breaks open a panel so you can get inside one of the trains. Then you open the doors from the inside to let everyone else in. And yes, they removed the train level.
If there's one thing i learned from HDTF, it's that you should always keep track of what your readers know. What you've told them. What you haven't. That way, you won't slip up and have to make some weird changes later to fit the illogical narrative. Oh also that you shouldn't mistreat your crew and you should let them do their jobs.
Goddamn this is unrealistically cool of the team to do this. No one would have blamed anyone for just trying to obfuscate as much of there involvement in this games as possible. The team went back and said, "No, fuck this, they paid for a game, there gonna GET a damn game!" And I fucking applaud them for that.
I never actually knew that M3SA were modifying hunt down the freeman, I'm glad I was recommended this video as it looks really sick. I don't even know much about the original hunt down the freeman but all I knew was that it was bad.
the most impressive thing is, the game with this build makes it more playable, and most of the maps looks a lil bit better in question of design and gameplay, impressive
Ight, putting this out here for the train station section. Literally just wait by the back of the train, took like 10 minutes but Col. Q will just pop up and have one of the soldiers start cutting their way into the train
Of course if someone did fixed everything (including the story), they couldn't, in any circumstance, remove the best dialogue ever: "you fucked up my face".
The axe is in the original game, it's in the map when you get out of the factory before the piers. It's in a dark garage in a corner of the map. It doesn't even stay with the player with the level transition, so it was just junk wasted code.
I can't believe it took all those years to have a true fix for a game like this. I never got to play it so after that build I may end up buying HDTF this time.
it is very clear that act 3 is still getting a major overhaul but act 1 and 2 are really good now. we actually have a decent set of playable levels set in the 7 hours war now.
The story might still be shit, but actual good map design for htdf actually made my heart FLY. Legitimately. I’m very proud of the M3sa team for trying to turn HTDF from a dumpster fire to an actual mediocre source game. :O
I’m one of those people that favor gameplay over story. I mean Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 have even worse stories than Rainbow Six Siege, but I’d still rather play those two games over the latter. So to see good map design in HDTF is something.
This will not ever be a true Half-Life game by any standard. But what it just might be once all is said and done, is a good game. A game you'd want to buy and play through maybe more than once.
If it wasn't for the fact that my money would go to Berkan instead of the dev team fixing this, I would wholeheartedly fork my cash over to support the devs. It's nice to see that, like Prospekt, there's still people out there who believe in this project. Labors of love speak volumes more than cash grabs, even if the end result is shit.
I think the cutscenes can be completely replaced by having them happen in front of you through Adrian's POV without taking you out of the game, just like in the rest of the Half-Life series. Even other fan games do this, like Black Mesa (even though it's a HL1 remake, they added a variety of content that wasn't there in the original such as Eli and Kleiner making a brief appearance where they talk to Gordon the same way they do in HL2)
I can't believe the dev team is pulling a No Man's Sky on this trainwreck of a game and honestly it makes me feel really happy to see a version of this game that's closer to what I originally expected when I first heard of it. Props to them. Also may Berkan have the worst luck imaginable.
These guns just don't look like they belong in the universe, I think it's just the art style, not the guns themselves. They feel lifted from another game.
I'm sorry my man, but I'm mentally exhausted with HDTF at this point. Can't cover it anymore. I do have one more video planned about the OST and that's pretty much it. The previous 1 and a half hour video really took a toll on me cause I've never made a video that long.
Radiation Hazard, they did another update on June 1st, they added the sasha level AND made the last level not a big huge tower but a house with multiple manned turrets.

3:10 env_hudhint is the way to do it, yah!
7:35 "Equip parkour" makes it sound like equipping a parkour weapon when it should be "holster weapon to enable parkour".
11:42 If they were gonna have that narration of Big Mitch, it should be at the start of Act 2 instead of inside the video file.
Originally env_hudhint didn't work because Berkan didn't want to display hints. He ordered the programmer to disable it in the source code.

to think that HDTF, one of, if not the worst game on the market is getting its redemption arc, makes me hopeful for the future of games. i hope the devs of the m3sa builds aren't overworking themselves, but i'm still super happy that we're slowly getting the game that we deserved all those years ago

HDTF has potential of joining no man's sky club of "being a horrible game at launch but slowly saved by good updates/patches"

The game actually has two endings that you have a 50/50 chance of getting from the forest map. You picked the new new ending, the other is the house ending that was originally going to be in the game, but was cut because it was a bought level from the csgo workshop.

Hunt Down The Freeman is one of the games
@@reisu_3708 one of the games of all times, in fact.
It’s one of the games of all time indeed
I have this weird interest in HDTF. Even though the game is bad, I actually enjoy the story in a bizarre way. I'm interested to see how this improves more and more. I heard there were some redone voice lines, so maybe they could find a way to edit those in?
I think some of the maps look better, but maybe could have some extra details added here and there. Right now it feels like they're trying to get the general gameplay fixed first before doing major visual overhauls, but the ones they did do are leagues better.
I’m with you, the story is so awful that it actually becomes enjoyable.
@OctoOOZ There’s nothing funny about Sonic and Elise’s awkward relationship. Also there’s a section of the story that is… actually good, unlike with HDTF.
You're not the only one here
Even i sort of like the game, yeah it's bad, but with the M3SA build it makes it better
@LOAN NGUYEN Well, then you have a problem: Kevlar can't stop energy weapons, which most Combine armaments are..
It gives me a lot more confidence in the modding community than I already had.
oh wow the game got its redemption arc? that's pretty cool. Too bad guy who started all this didn't have one
And will never will be.
He doesn't deserve redemption. He took all the money and hide inside Activision.
Bro he doesn't deserve one
I sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, believe in you guys!
And of course, many thanks to the author of the video for talking about it. You have no idea how important this video was to me. Thank you so much!

Hi there. Very well made video. If I may point out some things about the game, that weren't said in the video and/or you probably didn't know:
- G-man pronounces "Mesa" correctly now in the cutscenes, thanks to a small fix (I did that btw :D )
- You can spot G-man in many maps
- there are plans on redoing or fixing some maps (though idk if I'm allowed to speak about it)
- parkour mechanic has sound effects now
- there's a co-op mod, though buggy
- Mitchell's room at the beginning of Act 3's still wip, but it will contain some details that migh help the story a little bit (f.e. photos with crewmembers or bits of his diary)

I might actually give this game a go now. Seems like a quality update. I really hope they manage to finish to a good extent.
Straight up made trash kinda feel like something worth playing which is honestly very respectable

Ight, putting this out here for the train station section. Literally just wait by the back of the train, took like 10 minutes but Col. Q will just pop up and have one of the soldiers start cutting their way into the train
I'm honestly amazed that someone want to fix this game but it's cool to see how it could've been gameplay wise
It may be a lot of work to fix Hunt Down the Refund, but if they could, they deserve a medal.

it is very clear that act 3 is still getting a major overhaul but act 1 and 2 are really good now. we actually have a decent set of playable levels set in the 7 hours war now.
Modders like these really make me appreciate the gaming industry community. Too bad we rarely get redemption arcs like this in AAA
They are actually fixing it?
Wow, wasn't expecting that. I was considering fixing it myself as a side project but hey good on them.
This will not ever be a true Half-Life game by any standard. But what it just might be once all is said and done, is a good game. A game you'd want to buy and play through maybe more than once.
I get what you're saying, but here's an interesting question:
What makes true half life game?
@@bruhSaintJohn Well not making a Metal Gear fanfic is probably a good start.
It's crazy how these small changes leverage massive improvements in the game. I see real potential here.
I can't believe the dev team is pulling a No Man's Sky on this trainwreck of a game and honestly it makes me feel really happy to see a version of this game that's closer to what I originally expected when I first heard of it. Props to them. Also may Berkan have the worst luck imaginable.
