I have always overlooked the .22 magnum. But, after shooting it in the excellent S&W 351PD I have changed my perspective. In light revolvers it’s easy to carry, and in the 351, accurate and fun. It’s a shame that I don’t see many of the.22 mag j-frame sized revolvers in stores. You kinda have to hunt for them. It’s a good option that many people don’t know about.

Super video, excellent setup with the ballistic gel /water bottle backup and of course, the high speed cameras. Always liked the idea of the 22mag's extra power, reduced recoil...My preference would be from a 3" or longer barrel. Thanks!! Tim
For a bullet that is meant to burn up the majority of its powder in a snubose 2inch barrel. I feel like there are limiting returns when shot out of an 16inch rifle. Will it do better? Yes, but it all depends on how long it takes to burn off all the powder effectively limiting the pressure.
Out of a rifle I think that you could expect to see the bullet fail. Because of the bullets construction and the increase in velocity the bullet will probably come apart to quickly and have a lot less penetration. Just MHO.

That gun (if its reliable) with this ammo would absolutely suck to get shot at with. looks like an acceptable ammount of damage, and an experienced shooter should be able to put a whole bunch of holes in something, really quickly. I don't think trying to get a ton of energy per round on target is the way to go for defense... a reasonable ammount of damage out of a super controllable platform, and training to keep shooting till the threat stops is the way to go for handguns.

Range time and your own types of testing will absolve any issues you think the cartridge may have. I've had more feed failures with .380HP ammo then I have with any other cartridge I've owned.
@@j.rob.5943 I'm not arguing with you, I've never owned one in a pistol but if I could run 500-1000 rounds through one I'd have a decent idea on just how much I would trust it vs trusting word of mouth. My lcp2 is unreliable with DRT frangibles. First round chambered is literally 50/50 failure to feed. Never had a single hiicup with ball ammo though.
I have a weirdly tremendous love for pistols in tiny, ultra-low recoil cartridges. I bought a Taurus TX-22 right after they released (I was considering other 22 pistols but that 16+1 capacity with a sub $300 tag won me over) and it is insanely fun to shoot. My 10 year old son and I shoot it ALL the time. We have to have around 9-10k rounds through it and it's a damn good gun. So when I see that Walther, it made me giddy. I've gotta get one of those. My EDC pistol is a full-size PDP with a green Crimson Trace RAD and a TLR-1 so the WMP would be amazing to add to the collection. I remember back when this channel used to be a guy doing fun and funny trick shots and all that stuff, so I love seeing the honest opinions about gun stuff. Personally, I don't like to carry rimfires for anything other than plinkers or varminting. But I've had a couple short periods where the 22 pistol was all I had running. Getting to see how the ammo for these kinds of guns makes a difference on target is a great reminder that even a micro 22 (long rifle or magnum) can get the job done if needed. Maybe I missed it (I'll go check as soon as I post this) but I'd like to see more of that NAA PUG. I've always had my eye on one just as a toy, but also one that can actually be dropped in a pocket to be ultra-discreet. I love single action revolvers. I love semi-novelty guns. And, most importantly, I love guns in general. If I can find an NAA PUG-TP (the ported tritium version) for a [relatively] decent price, I'm definitely going to snag it.

That is pretty amazing! In fact it reminds me of the old tbbc ! Trophy bonded bear claw. It had a monolithic solid base with deep narrow hollow cavity pre programmed to make cutting petals with a progressively thinning side wall at the ogive area , bonded core, hollow point . Normally profiled as a spire point flat base, with a few roundnose exceptions , 7-30 waters ,.30-30,.32win spcl.and .375 for 38-55win... And made for .224 up to .500. It was known almost revered for reliable expansion, deep penetration and high weight retention. It was in the class of the A- frame, x bullet and tsx, accubond, a-squared, woodleigh weldcore, ect. Does that sound like this bullet to you, after handling? It looks the part from what I see in the video. That Walther is sweet.
There had been some controversy regarding the cutting pedal effect. Some politicians said that it was deadlier but the object behind defense is to stop Mr. Bad-guy from doing bad things. This is especially important when he's strung out on PCP or is extremely angry. Keep in mind that I *don't* have any medical qualifications but would imagine that a larger blood pressure drop from more bleeding would incapacitate someone pretty quick.
My preferred concealed carry weapon is a stolen pizza hut salt shaker. At close range 5 to 7 feet it can be extremely accurate and can be carried almost anywhere..lol have a great day and keep looking for that better tomorrow
I can start carrying my pmr-30. I carry a full-size frame now, so that wouldn’t be an issue. I use a OWB holster w/extra mag. 61 rounds and at half the weight! Yes, mine is one that doesn’t have feed issues.
Sure, 9mm is a better self defense round, but 22 WMR is gonna do the job with greater control. Seriously... why does everyone downplay something more lethal than the .22 LR, which has certainly proven itself in sentry elimination? 22 WMR would make a terrific self defense round and allow for greater follow up.
Own a PMR, and have some hands-on in the LGS with the new Walther. The latter is a BEAST by comparison, larger than their centerfire 9/40 pistols. Without having them side-by-side, I'm betting the Walther is even larger than Ruger's 5.7.
I have a Ruger Single Six and it has a 6.5 inch barrel . I like the CCI Maxi Mag better than the Federal Punch , Maxi Mag has a 30 grain jacketed hollow point +v 2200 fps (varmint round ) . We have a ground hog problem and I use these to solve it . At 30 yards they make a small hole going in and a thumb size hole coming out . As a self defence round I think they would work very well . Mags seem to work better in longer barrels . .

If you only could pick one caliper to use the rest of your life - 22 Magnum would be the best choice, just for its multiple uses.
It’s a good option that many people don’t know about.
impressive I have to admit. It actually made me consider a 22 mag for self defense!
Especially in a gun like the PMR30 thats only about 18 ounces fully loaded with 30 rounds!
Finally a .22mag video with the full spectrum of barrel lengths🙌
22 mag is now a decent carry option. Low recoil and easier to shoot.
The Federal Punch round surprised me and did a lot better than I expected. Very nice results.
Tasty little mushroom montage at the end there, thanks for the analysis/comparison 👍
I’d like to see this from a PMR-30 and a full 16” rifle barrel as well.
I just bought a couple North American Arms 22WMR revolvers with the foldable grip holster and I love them. They are great for a back-up CCW or just to throw in the glovebox.
I love 22 mag and 17hmr but the 17 I like in rifle. Personally.
Great test ! I have the Punch LR and I like the ammo , I use a 4” barrel revolver!
As of yet I have not found the WMR version !!
Your test answered a lot of questions ! Well done !!
Great vid as always good Sir! This new offering definitely makes for a viable option for the.22 caliber and the WMR especially.
This would be a good choice for self-defense, Thanks 22 plinkster.!
Very nicely explained and tested. Thank you!
Just bought a Heritage Barkeep with 2.7" barrel and these look like a pretty good option for that. The expansion doesn't make for a much bigger projectile but better than nothing!
Super video, excellent setup with the ballistic gel /water bottle backup and of course, the high speed cameras. Always liked the idea of the 22mag's extra power, reduced recoil...My preference would be from a 3" or longer barrel. Thanks!! Tim
Very useful comparison of barrel lengths. I carry a 2" pocket revolver in 22mag. Will be getting some Fed Punch. Impressive performance. Thanks.
would like to see what it does out of a rifle barrel
Beavis, I read on a forum out of a rifle barrel 1800fps,don't recall what barrel length.
Just MHO.
@@kalin6149 22wmr is more of a rifle round. 9mm is what you described.
With 22mag you see great speed gains with length of barrel. 16 to 18" is best. I don't know why you said that but 22wmr and 177hmr are both rifle rounds.
@@wasntmeXYZ there's a huge world of rifles for those rounds, people. Ruger, cz semi auto, savage, steyr... all 16 to 20 inch barrel rifles.
Awesome video, I just recently got a Heritage rough rider, I'm gonna buy the 22 wmr cylinder and add it to my carry rotation, there's just something special about shooting a single action cowboy gun!
Thanks for sharing. I currently use Speer Gold Dot Short barrel out of a 4 inch barrel. This may be another option. Love to a comparison video one day. Again thanks for sharing.
Speer Gold Dot is awesome in 22Magnum
glad you included the NAA, those are great for pocket edc
Since you have now become the 22WMR channel 😜, would you consider doing a comparison video between the Punch ammo and say, the much cheaper, 30 grain varmint ammo at 2200 fps. I'd like to see how it does with shorter barrel lengths. If you don't want to do it, but are aware of tests that are already out here, please direct me to those. Love all your videos. Lots of fun to watch.
Got a Savage 93 now and 22 WMR is a great small-game round. Getting a handgun that my wife can shoot easily would be a bonus!
Very impressive little round, great video thanks for making it 💪🏾😎
Well done! Excellent demonstration for reference on home defense, CC, etc. Thank you!
Wow. Now I have to wonder how this ammo would perform/cycle in a PMR30. Cool video !
Let me know what you think as I have a PMR30 as well
@@joelkeller5993 works well in my pmr30 but from what I understand all of these pistols are a little different as far as what they like. I have 2 of them but I've only tried the punch in my newer one. The pmr 30 dosen't seem to be as bad as the internet would have you believe.
I'm retired law enforcement and have carried PMR30 as well as a 9mm Sig. The PMR30 is a nice lightweight pistol which has a composite body which is nice in the Florida humidity...it doesn't rust when carried inside the waistband. And with 30 rounds I feel very confident with it.
I like you tested with different barrel lengths. I'll be using my 6 1/2 inch Rough Rider - one cylinder 22 Mag, the other cylinder 22LR Punch. Thanks for your testing.
This is a game changer IMO. 22 mag is such a great round. Be interesting to see if any companies make a polymer pistol for this caliber.
Kel tec already does
Kel tec pmr 30
I've got to get some of these for my NAA 22mag. Great comparison. Thanks.
Got a Walther WMP 2 weeks ago . I'm impressed ! I do custom holsters and belts in leather and have my parts cut out for the holster and low slung belt . Tomorrow I'm gonna start tooling the leather . Going to do a Tombstone theme on the belt with a big Daisy on the holster !
I'm so interested in the WMP! But why, why, why no threaded barrel?!?
So cowboy 🤠
That gun (if its reliable) with this ammo would absolutely suck to get shot at with. looks like an acceptable ammount of damage, and an experienced shooter should be able to put a whole bunch of holes in something, really quickly. I don't think trying to get a ton of energy per round on target is the way to go for defense... a reasonable ammount of damage out of a super controllable platform, and training to keep shooting till the threat stops is the way to go for handguns.
Outstanding job you have done on this review, certainly gives one food for thought. Thank you sir.
Nice! I use an LCR in .22mag and I'm definitely going to get some of this stuff. Great video.
Even with a 22lr I have never had a turkey go more than 3 feet with a solid head hit.
@@mattfranks4086 I used to have trouble dropping 8 pound jackrabbits with a .22LR rifle with standard old hollow point LR. Found out kind of by accident a CCI Stinger in a Ruger .22 Mark worked much better. I'd tell the story but it gets kind of long. Any rate it was Stingers for me since and that was good 45 years ago.
Very affective round, very under rated in pistols as well
I got a Taurus 22 mag with a 6-in barrel. Would never hesitate to use it for self-defense
Glad you can find 22 magnum. It’s almost unheard of where I live. Interesting video. I have a 22 magnum rifle and I am lucky to find ammunition. So I don’t shoot it much.
Illegal in most States, the .22 WMR in a rifle is one of the finest cartridges for Fall Turkey hunting.
Illegal in most states?
@@jefferp For turkey hunting it is illegal most places I've been. I don't know why, maybe their Game and Fish guys haven't tried it. Or they consider it just another rimfire. It sure works.
@@gortbot7748 maybe the .22 WMR is considered in the power range of a center fire cartridge and not allowed?
Beats me.
@@jefferp My home State allows centerfire rifle( 735 ft/lbs at the muzzle and up) , .357, .41,.44 magnum pistols, bows, crossbows, shotguns, and muzzleloading rifles .45 and bigger for both Spring and Fall Turkey seasons. But not .22 WMR, only 330 ft/lbs muzzle energy.
It's nice the. 22 keeps gettin a little love from the manufacturers
I keep a 22wmr revolver next to my bed i definitely need to get some federal punch for it now lol
That’s it I’m going to try those out of my model 94 22 magnum and see what kind of. F p s I’ll get with 18” that should be fun
Well now this was a interesting video and I think that the 22 magnum is a good solid round especially with the introduction of the punch 22 magnum, but it's it is still a rimfire and I have always been Leary of using a rimfire to protect my life or others. I could see it as a hideaway or backup gun.
Federal ammo is some of the best, after 500 rnds, not one F T F.
Range time and your own types of testing will absolve any issues you think the cartridge may have.
I've had more feed failures with .380HP ammo then I have with any other cartridge I've owned.
@@Seasniffer69 rimfire is just inherently less reliable due to how it is primed
@@j.rob.5943 I'm not arguing with you, I've never owned one in a pistol but if I could run 500-1000 rounds through one I'd have a decent idea on just how much I would trust it vs trusting word of mouth.
My lcp2 is unreliable with DRT frangibles.
First round chambered is literally 50/50 failure to feed. Never had a single hiicup with ball ammo though.
also leary of rimfire cartridges, plinking is one thing but self defense is a whole different ball game.
My EDC is a "Pug" with the folding handle. I've been using the Punch ammo, and I'm really glad to see that performance.
Excellent video!
Lol giving a 10 year old a real gun, good job father of the year 🤡🤡🤡🤡
@@Nexy9 you are definitely in the wrong comments section if you think the people watching this channel won't support teaching a ten year old gun safety and proper use of a handgun.
Great tests !
I started with the Federal Punch 3 years ago in .22 LR , so far I like the round and have been comparing it to CCI Stinger and CCI Velocitor!
Not the Federal Punch in .22 WMR just yet !
22 mag is awesome......really close to 9mm. in alot of ways...with zero recoil it may be better than 9mm for most people
Soooo loud
I've been carrying a 22 WMR Derringer for Self Defense years . Pistol hunted squirrel with a Ruger single six 22 WMR Love this round !
I would like to see a test of this ammunition in a rifle. I use my 22 magnum Marlin rifle for garden pest control and this looks like ammunition that would work well on groundhogs.
I need some of that for my PMR30.
Thanks for the review and tests. I am looking for a LR / WMR convertible revolver and this ammo looks better all the time, in both cartridges. Assuming the barrel likes them both.
I work for a FFL, get a heritage rough rider for under 200$ (most) come with a .22Lr AND a .22 WMR cylinder.
They didn’t even pay me to say this lol. They’re just cool guns to plunk with and cheap
Great video and exceptional performance out of that ammo. Options just keep getting better.
22 mag is cool, I've always wanted a gun in that caliber. This video taught me so much. Is there a video where you show 22lr hollowpoint in ballistic gelatin?
The Heritage 22 magnum is hella fun
and according to the expert at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue it will not blow out a lung....
Just need some tweezers to pick the pieces out
But that 9mm. Lol
He does advocate the use of a pump shotgun…. So that’s good… Just rack it and discharge it straight up in the air… that’ll do it, no shot out lungs! Lol
Let’s go Brandon!

Thanks for the test, I am pleased that I use two of the guns you used for EDC depending on my wardrobe Usually they are my back-ups not my principle EDC.
Only 22mag I've kept over the years is a 1970 centennial marlin lever action. Fun plinker
That sounds like a fun rifle
I have a Winchester 9422 in .22wmr would like to get one in .22lr too if I can find one in good shape and a reasonable price
I have both rifle and pistol in 22 mag. Both are zero in for me. The bad guys don't have a chance. Going to try the punch. Thx Mac for the video.
Everyone should follow your VDO format - Professional but just the facts. Thank you.
Fantastic video. Great demo Love your enthusiasm . Always liked .22 since I was a kid.. Wonder if ammo is easily available .
a big fan of the 22 mag for all the right reasons...
Very interesting. I have 2 revolvers and 2 rifles that shoot 22wmr. Would like to get my hands on the Walther WMR as well. When I can find one!
Nice video! I carry a smith 351c quite often. My wife Carrie’s her 351pd. I also carry my Smith 340, 357 Mag, at times.
Just bought the S&W 351PD, not my main gun but so light it is my backup. Will most likely go with my daughter to college
I shoot my Key-Tec 22 PMR 30 better than anything but I really want to try that Walther. This is great info! Thanks!
Yes,I really want to try it out of my PMR30 as well. It looks impressive!
Mags seem to work better in longer barrels .
.
Great video! You DO need to emphasize that shooting a .22 Mag handgun without EAR PROTECTION will give you permanent hearing damage, and life-long tinnitus! After forty-five years I can still hear my first pistol shot with a .22 Magnum, all the time!.......................elsullo
That is just one very good reason i prefer the .22LR.
That's weird cause I've literally been shooting 22wmr without ear pro for over 20 years an has never bothered me
WHAT?!

I picked up a inexpensive odd ball German made 8 shot revolver in 22mag with a 9.5" barrel (Arminius). Haven't shot it much but CURIOUS to see how that ammo does in that pistol. I do have a 22lr cylinder and crane assembly for it WHICH IS KINDA NICE. I got it on the internet from a website that specializes in pistol and rifle parts.😯😉😁👍
