The Mercedes C-Class has sharpened up its act and in doing so has become a force to be reckoned with.
This much improved version of the fourth generation Mercedes C-Class features a package of significant enhancements. The exterior revisions are subtle but inside there are important changes, including the option of a fully-digital instrument cluster. As previously, the core range is built around saloon and estate models and there are fresh entry-level petrol and diesel engine options. Plus the driving experience has been enhanced with the optional application of Mercedes' latest autonomous driving technology.
Background
This fourth generation '205' model series C-Class has delivered a stronger proposition with a greater focus than was the case with its predecessors. That's been necessary for two reasons. First, stronger competition in the mid-sized premium badged executive saloon and estate segment, not only from the usual suspects, BMW's 3 Series and Audi's A4, but also from cars like the Jaguar XE and the Lexus IS. Secondly, there's been the fact that Mercedes buyers have had an alternative to this car in the shape of the brand's similarly priced and comparably sized CLA four-door coupe.
Since this MK4 model's original launch at the end of 2013, Mercedes has gradually broadened out the range, first with fire-breathing Mercedes-AMG performance derivatives, then with sleek Coupe and Cabriolet body styles. By early 2018 though, it was clear that a little more remedial work would be needed to keep this car competitive with the best of the opposition, hence the introduction of the heavily revised version we're going to look at here.
Driving Experience
The C-Class has for some time been, and will continue to be, a car with a clear focus on comfort and refinement - at least in its mainstream guises anyway. It was the first model in this class to offer the option of air suspension, though most buyers stick with the standard steel springs. As before, across the range there's a standard 'DYNAMIC SELECT' driving modes system - and you can add to that with optional 'DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL' adaptive damping. All models come as standard with 9G-Tronic automatic transmssion, which now features nine speeds and buyers certainly aren't short of engine options, with most still likely to want a diesel. There's a base 160hp 1.5-litre unit in the C200d. But most buyers opt for the 2.0-litre 194hp unit on offer in the C220d variant, which offers the option of 4MATIC 4WD.
The entry-level petrol unit in the base C180 is a 1.6-litre 156hp powerplant, but ideally you'd stretch to the more modern, much perkier 184hp 1.5-litre engine installed in the C200 which features the brand's latest 'EQ Boost' technology using a 48volt on-board network with a belt-driven starter/alternator. When accelerating, 'EQ Boost' system can assist the engine with an additional 14hp, bridging the brief moment until the turbocharger has built up its full charge pressure. 4MATIC 4WD is optional. Mercedes has also developed a 2.0-litre 258hp version of this petrol engine for the C300 derivative. Beyond that lie only the Mercedes-AMG high performance derivatives. The first of these, the 3.0-litre V6 C43 4MATIC, now puts out 390hp, 23hp more than before. Beyond that lies only the V8 C63 AMG model, with a 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo engine offering either 476 or 510hp.

It's already been said, sort of, but this is a truly fantastic review.

It's not a favourable company car, the 220d is the best for the mass user. My E300 was my choice over 220 because of its refinement. But company car drivers look at cost more.

william dryden the Mercs back in the ‘80s and ‘90s were by far mechanically superior than nowadays models. Much better looking too. From “the best or nothing brand” it turned just into an overpriced average car brand 😏

It's a few years on since this vid and the new C-Class is out now, but was looking used anyway and mainly at 3-Series but this particular spec model looks to largely fit the bill, this update is a nice looking car especially in that dashing red and no shiny black plastic interior is very appealing. I think the new 2022 is likely to have more capacitance buttons which is off-putting so looking at this facelift W205 is definitely an option - if i can find one with a heated steering wheel........
I take it that the diesel models use AdBlue DEF, yes? Also how was the drive with the 4matic, would standard RWD be a nicer drive? Thanks.

Hello the reviewer mentions a ‘special led light package’ being fitted as standard. I can’t see that listed in any specs anywhere? In fact you have to buy the expensive night package to get it. Could you advise?

Love the comment at 1:12 that "...it's with this model (the C Class), NOT with the company's smaller front-wheel drive offerings (A Class) that Mercedes ownership actually starts.! All those new Merc owners in their A Classes, that don't realise just how good a Mercedes can actually be.
Pros : good looking, nice interior cons: no touch screen navigation system,rear seat Thai support isn't good,rear seat head room should be improved
Not having a touchscreen means the interface has been carefully designed for keeping driver focus on the road with a physical interaction array which requires a minimal amount of your field of view to perform properly.

The 1.6 Diesel is also the OM654 and will replace the 2l Version in the E200d because its more efficient.

I really like the the in cabin noise of the brand's 2.0.T gas engine in any class. It sounds like a well built, fine-tuned modified engine.
The blow of valve and exhaust gurgle are the awesome and impressed me as was not expecting that.
I'm guessing with a set of winter tyres these cars are fine 👍

6000 of those parts were a new type of bolt that requires a mercedes specific tool.

@@Papikristo Been there. I bought a 220d this month. I was reversing out of a parking space in town when two cars moved to the rear of me. My car slammed on the breaks. I've not seen that advertised in any review.
I've had mercedes on and off for 30 years with a BMW 525 estate, a Mazda CX5, a Hyundai tucson and i40 but went back to Mercedes because of the style and quality and the service at my local 50kms away dealer. The Mazda dealer(s) are shit, the BMW arrogant, the Hyundai superb. Voilà, back to a good mercedes dealer and a car I still don't fully know. :))
21:06 If in 2017-2019 models, driver still has to dock his/her phone to keep up with Traffic, Navigation and Media, sorry to say mate, but this by no means is a sophisticated Infotainment system, if cables, holders and chargers will still be lying around in line of sight.
I wonder what’s your definition of sophisticated is in the 21st Century. Automobile companies are Pants in getting the basic right inside the Cabin!
