MERCEDES C-CLASS vs its predecessor: W206 vs W205, from long term ownership perspective

  • The new C-Class W206 has been launched, but for the past 7 years I've been owning the W205 generation. So I thought that nothing would be better than having a comparative review from the perspective of a long term ownership of the W205. After all, if you owned or own a W205, you would probably consider the W206 when you get to think of a new car. And besides that, the W206 has actually changed by a lot, and everything is better!
Please don't judge too much on the accent of my English. It is my first review in English and I did it because of the unique context of this test - having owned the predecessor for such a long time and having a unique perspective to compare them. So I thought that this test may bring something valuable to more audience.

When I bought my off lease W205, the sales manager made an important observation -- The C Class has progressively been creeping into the space held by the E Class as the E Class keeps creeping into the S Class' space. This, he believes, is a result of the release of the CLA which is targeted at the old C Class demographic. It's unfortunate as the W205 was really Mercedes Benz getting a car right.

@@kevinjoel1569 Extremely. I have owned our current W205 from new for 6 years (also have a GLC) and with the annual service plan it has never had any faults - other than the infotainment display. After 4 years the display failed completely. Mercedes replaced it with the updated version under warranty and it failed again 9 months later. Fortunately, I had extended my warranty, so it was replaced again and still going fine 18 months later. Other than that, not a single fault - under warranty or otherwise. My GLC is now 4 years old (bought new) and not a single fault of any description - maintained under the service package.

Very good review. I agree that new generation is a bit too flashy and has too much visual noise. Too many ambient lightings and cheap plastics have maybe actually made the new C class more of an A class. In addition to this, I believe, W205 was the last good looking C class.

Great review and good to see a comparison between the models. I also drive a W205 model, 2018 C200 estate and I agree with you that this is a very good car for size, driving pleasure and comfort, very well sorted. I was disappointed to see that, just like every new car, the W206 has increased in size ! As you say if you want a bigger car, buy an E-class. Also, the price here in GB for me to replace my car like-for-like has increased by approx Euro 12000, now costing £49,000 and the the options available are less than before eg. I could not select a lighter coloured interior with the top specification model. This is disappointing as I do like the new model and to change to an A class is just not the same.
Thanks for this comprehensive review and by the way your English is excellent !👍

Hello! First of all, congrats on the youtube video! I would like to add that I am a 2020 w205 220d owner and my car weighs about 1690 kg according to the cerificate issued by the mercedes benz factory that came with the car. The stated weight from the mercedes benz technical information leaflet of the 220d model says 1510kg …so it is a 180kg difference from what the marketing guys state and the actual weight from the factory. The new EU car certificates are now stating the actual weight of the car from the factory. It would have been really interesting to put both cars on an industrial scale to find the real weight of the two models. I have 30k on the w205 and have had no issues, hopping for it to be a reliable commuter car. I am really impressed with fuel economy for a 1700kg car with a 90kg driver…driving at near legal speeds you can get 4,5-5,5 l/100 km easily. All in all a much better car from my experience than my old F30, but inferior in most respects to the g20.

Here in the states the W205 is a 2021 which I purchased and I'm so glad I did. The new generation will be the 2022. My car has the 2.0L gas engine. It is an amazing little motor. I have to keep reminding myself that it is just a 4cyl. I'm not a fan of the big computer touch screen in the new generation. I like a mix of real toggel switches and buttons along with a the 10" screen that the W205 has. It gives you a classic look with a touch of technology. Manufactures seem to be really stuck on the colorful lighting, huge screens and autonomus driving. I love to drive. So I can do with out it. I do like the safety stuff like BLS monitoring and back up cameras.

how can you compare a base C180 with a C220d with the amg pack? also check our numbers... a diesel 205 C220d has a weight of 1570kg where the 206 C220d is 1680kg. 4matic adds 25kg extra if optioned... i also don't know how you can call a 205 nimble driving... maybe compared to a base E class sure... the 204 was a nimble drive and i speak as a 205 owner. where the 205 really had to grow on me after the 204 (i really disliked the display and the less sportive driving feel but the wife really liked the car). the 206 struck me as better in every way if you ignore the sit offer in engines... a mercedes without 8 or atleast 6 cilinders... idk where the world is going to

I bought my C-class factory ordered and 5 years and 120 000 km later i have only had two "problems". Had to change my brake pads in the front and one emission sensor malfunctioned. The emission sensor problem was nothing that bothered the car and when i turned it in Mercedes took it on good will. Got a free rental car and the changing of the sensor cost me nothing. Have loved every minute of driving my w205, D220. The thing i dont love now is goverment that is now raping us car owners who have dieselcars. 1 litre of diesel now cost 20,62 sek in Sweden which is right now januari 2022 exactly 2 euros or 2,27 dollars.

I would like to say w205 is one of the best designs ever. It is like a mini S class. What's even better is you have the option to choose 3 different suspension pack with amg. The usual amg one(a rough suspension for general use) , a bit softer one(middle ground for softer feel close to amg) and air suspension(most comfortable but a risky one for bad road conditions, if it breaks your cost will be high). I would say the packs offered with w205 came out was really enjoyable vs BMW or Audi and the pricing was fair enough. w206 on the other hand doesn't feel like it, or at least nowhere near about it. Yes I don't like the w205's multimedia and config screen like you put a cheap tablet in the middle and they made it better in w206 however it still doesn't make the new design overall better or more impressing.
I also would like to thank for the video as well. A great review!

You made an admirable and detailed comparison! I have the old generation and I like it better from the outside, it still turns heads all the time, especially mine. The one thing I loved about the new generation is the central console with that gorgeous vertical screen, it's the most beautiful central console in the whole car industry ever in my opinion. Anyway I agree with you that the dashboard looks too techniological, too colorful, and I much prefer the older version. One thing might make me buy the new model that is the superior ride comfort, I do appreciate this even though I cannot complain about my Merc.

I was wondering if or when I’ll get the urge to swap the W205 with W206, but now I’m sure it’s a No.
Those ugly electronic console and the dash board, Merc, what are you doing?! Sure the ugly old monitor is awful, but the 18-21 restyle is the excellent balance.
And the driving experience? Thanks for letting us know about the laggy way Merc chose to follow.

No idea why they changed it. The W205 is one of the best interiors Mercedes ever did imo. Those vents and the switch controls are just sexy.

It was indeed quite nice. Whether it’s an attempt at cutting cost or pretending to be a Tesla, the result is absolutely horrid.
The new dashboards look like a Chinese tablet glued behind the steering wheel and then all those switches whether chrome or glossy black finished have been replaced by that touchscreen.
I would easily bet that it was to cut cost. Now they can just stick those screens in all models and save a ton on the machining and assembling of those center consoles and dashboards.
Now I wish I had upgraded my 2019 to the latest W205 available. As there is no way in hell that I would be getting the W206.

@@jimmyjay122 It’s a shame because Mercedes always made the best interiors in the business. When you buy a Mercedes you should feel like you’re buying a car that will never go out of style. For example, I drove a W211 into the ground. That design was as nice in 2020 as it was in 2007. Nonetheless, there were elements of that car that were tired and reminded me of something my grandfather would drive.
With that being said, I felt like the W205 was a perfect balance between Mercedes’ old school luxury elements and a modern, more youthful, car. It was refined, classic but at the same time sporty. The centre consol on that car is one of the best I had ever seen. I, like you, think that screen is a horrible use of that space.
Luckily I indeed have the W205 and I tend to keep my cars for 10 years so hopefully by then Mercedes smartens up their designs.

      @@MrChippinator Such a shame indeed...
The 205 interior is indeed one of the best that they’ve made to date.
I remember a while back I saw a review video by 5th Gear where they mentioned that the buttons of the W204 where designed by Mercedes so that they require a force of 4 Newtons to be pushed/operated and how that attention to details was truly fascinating. Now it’s all capacitive this and touch that… A bit depressing to be honest…
I also have no intention for switching my 205 to a 206 at all. However I’m not as optimistic as you that future models would be getting any better. I mean they did apply those horrid interior design lines to the S-class before they did it to the C…

Very good video thank you! But a can’t agree with you my father had all generation’s of c class and i have drive all of them. The W205 for me was the least Mercedes, the ride is hard, and is the same specs of yours the same tyres I can’t imagine the Amg. Mercedes has to be Mercedes and not Bmw. Is for that reason that i am in the market to buy the new one with standard suspension, without amg or the adaptive one. I want Mercedes confort.

I get that you own the other w205, but i wish you compared the w206 amg line to the w205 amg line since you’re asking people about which exterior do you prefer. Interior wise i love the digital screens. I love my w205 exterior but i wish i had that amazing digital interior in the w206 alot of people would probably disagree but as a young 27 year old first mercedes im also happy with what i have now

If i could just replace my Mercedes-Benz S204 200CDI engine with 320.000km, with new OM651 engine, in order to make my vehicle have longer lifespan I would rather invest there my money then buying newer S205 or S206. Engine still works excellent, but I don't know how much life is still left in it. S204 has just enough electronics not to have a headache.

I moved from E90 to W205 3 years ago seeing the new W206 it just looks ugly and both compared to BMW its definitly confort over drinving feeling. Bmw series is still a beast in my heart w206 I feel more like a mature man driving it. I hate so much that C and E class look exact same.

This is Michael. Although price was a factor, you compared the wrong model. You should have driven the C300 if comparing the models was the goal. The C300 feels young and powerful , while maintaining comfort. I agree that the exterior of the 205 is better looking, but the interrior is not as good. You also chose the most bland (all black) interior for the 206 version. With an AMG interrior's contrasting colors it looks a lot better. You have 205 series owners with positive feedback, but while I commend the excellent work you did overall, as a 206 C300 owner I can tell you that the car is definitly superior. And with the pinnacle trim, I have a lighter, smaller (just right), better handling, car than the E class for less than an E class price.
The biggest mistake Mercedes makes is not selling the plug in hybrid version in America. That is just plain foolish! Plug in hybrids are the future, not full electric.

Tried w206 through MB test drive in indonesia, the cockpit is too much for my wife. She even scared to touch wrong button and makes the car flies. Surely will upgrade to 206 , but the price difference is too much :(

The conclusion, is that you are only a guy who doesn’t have enough money at the
time to buy the new w206 😂, i drove both of them 205 & 206, the new w206 is a huge step from the previous in terms of interior quality (better than the cracky, squeaky w205 interior), isolatied very well (bmw g20 is the leader in this point) and and even driving dynamics it is more like driving an 3 series f30 than a c class, the only issue that you said is the price , yeah it is expensive man !!
