    2017 E300, purchased with 20k miles on it. Went to Costco for shopping, walked out and car misfire like crazy. The Benz dealership is across the street from the Costco. Literally had them tow it across the street because I shut it off right away and refused to turn it back on.
    They had the car for 2 weeks.
    RINGLAND at cylinder 1 had failed. Not wrist pin. PISTON RING BOYS. Motor was removed and disassembled, repaired with new parts and reassembled. All at no cost of course, under warranty. Drove it for two years after that and now at 74k miles. Haven’t had to do anything to it at all aside from oil changes every 5k miles on the dot at the dealer. Very reliable. Oh and btw I am a BMW/Land Rover tech 😅🤣
    This engine is GREAT.

    Wrist pin noise can be detected as the engine is dropping in rpms when revved, almost sounds like a woodpecker. Most common in 2015 models, quite rare for 2016 models. At the dealer level we do a full bottom end rebuild, we replace the pistons, rods and wrist pins for all 4 cylinders. If you're experiencing a squeaky belt and have replaced the idler pulleys and tensioner with no success, back out the alternator bolts most of the way (do not remove them all the way) and give each one a good hit or two with a rubber mallet and retighten....the alternator can be slightly misaligned. No need to replace the engine air filter so frequently either, theres a pre-filter in the intake duct that traps alot of material and the shape of the duct prevents much material from reaching the filter. Mercedes recommended interval is 50k/5yrs and at that interval the filters usually aren't extremely dirty....you can change the filter with your spark plugs. Speaking of plugs, if you want to avoid having the plug boots get stuck in the head, warm the engine up a bit before removal and they'll slide out like butter. No real need to replace coil packs or boots when replacing plugs, only do so when one actually goes bad (easy to diagnose).

      I do hear a ticking sound while driving low speed ..aside of that had the car for 4 years and now I have a p052e code, I usually work on cars but I hear I have to lift the left side of the engine to get to the sensor that needs to be replaced is there any other easy ways?

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 2 года назад

      The coil boots rarely ever survive disassembly on higher mileage engines. By higher mileage, I mean 60k +. I've tried warming the engine, Heat guns you name it. I disconnect them from the coil body, and the boot is seized in the well real nice! When you pull them out, you will notice the boots are all discolored. Plus MB recommends them as part of a tune up.
      Also, in dusty ass south Florida, you ain't getting 50k out of an air filter out here. It will be filthy after 20k.

      I've found at least a dozen documented cases online of 2016+ m274 engines having piston #1 failure at the ring lands.
      The wrist pin / piston cracking issues is definitely NOT confined to early motors.

    I’ve been religiously running chevron 91 only since i purchased my 2018 E300 4matic at the dealer almost two years ago at 68,000 miles one owner. Now it’s at 110,000 miles and every 5K oil change it’s still running exactly the same way I had bought it. Smooth and quick. Just changed the PCV and thermostat as preventive and done the transmission at 100K and differential front and back. Oil changes makes a difference and so does gas. At 100,000 miles spark plugs changed spotless. Theplugs were not bad at all. Checked top of piston and it was clean

GLA is little different tho, GLA is much worse design it will cost you fortune. Otherwise nice smooth 2.0T engine with least problems and good power.

    2017 E300 suffered #1 piston failure at about 110K miles, always well maintained and fed on Costco premium fuel. No help from Mercedes corporate. Had block replaced by my local mechanic. Still waiting to see if a class action suit comes forth. MB should have a recall on this engine. Also as everyone else, I have had numerous problems, but I was lucky enough to have them serviced through an extended warranty that I had purchased thru MB. Latest is a P0299 code...MB recommends replacing the entire turbo assembly...turns out the waste-gate vacuum actuator was bad, found one on Amazon, fixed problem. $40 dollars vs $4000.

    Sadly I'm currently into the Oil separator value assembly replacemen that you mentioned in the video... What a pain in my ass....here's what I've has to remove besides a bunch of the sensors... Intercooler, ECM and bracket, starter, engine mount + bracket, a thick rubber shield. I'm 5hrs into it and I've only at the point of being able to see one of the 3 bolts on the lower part of the assembly that connects to the lower part of the engine... I'll say it will take me 8-9hrs to finish this job. Mercedes Benz dealership wanted $1600 for parts and labor. If I were to do it again. I'd give them the money. This job is certainly one of the worst and pain in my ass fixes I've done in a long time. This should be a recall item AND/OR should be covered as part of the extended emissions warranty that comes with the car. TOTAL BS...

    Thank you for the video. Our 2014 Japan spec 1.6 M 274 has developed a noticeable ticking sound. The sound came up immediately after starting the engine one morning and has since not gone away. Sent her in to Merc specialist here in Malaysia who after a day of servicing (e.o. Change) and checking says it is the CGI pump and a very normal sound. Having driven this car for 3" years, decided to start and listen closely. On idle, you There is duration that comes and goes where the ticking sound gets faster after what sounds like a snap over, then back to the slower ticking sound within a brief period of about 30-40 seconds. From the bit I have read, it sounds more like cam chain or cam lobe or cam gear there about. Any guesses would be greatly appreciated. TIA

    • @cupompa

      @Michael Lee Oh it did not need new fuel lines. I read on the W205 forums that the solution to the fuel smell from the A/C is just a tighter clamp on the rubber fuel line near the steering shaft.
      You can see my ownership thread here. Not bad reliability at all. I sold it after 4 years because my boss gave me her husband's BMW for free! And I didn't need 2 cars during the pandemic:

      It's an easy fix, we replace the soft hose and the clamps. Remove the cover that sits over the hpfp to gain access up top, access is easy with the transmission underpanel removed when below. My advice is to attach a shoestring to the old clamp up top and tie it to the top of the engine and remove the hose from below pulling downward. When you install the new hose go in the reverse and you'll have a much easier time with the routing of the hose.

    Very interesting your video and very useful! Honestly, I was very intrigued when you talked about the common issue that this engine has with the piston. You described some exact sounds that my M274 makes in the mornings when the engine is cold. I have a 2018 C300. You mentioned that this is common in the 2015 and 2016 models. I hope that this is already resolved for the 2018 model. However, your description of the issue matches what's happening with my engine, but only when it's cold. After about 15 minutes, it works perfectly. The car has 36,000 miles and is very well maintained. Should I be worried?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  Год назад

      Hey there Cristian! Your C300 should have an M264 engine, which is a bit different from the M274 that Kyle is diving into in this video. While Mercedes has acknowledged some valve seat issues on the M260 and M264 twins with an extended recall (fairly unlikely given your description, but may be worth looking into), they haven't noted any of the wristpin issues present on the early M270 and M274 engines carrying over to the newer family. The clattering of the direct-injection fuel delivery system on your engine is generally pretty noisy when functioning tip-top, which could be a part of what you're hearing.
      This being said, if you're hearing a noise that concerns you, swing by a dealer or independent shop to be sure it isn't a cause for concern!

    • @cristianisnardi6066
      @cristianisnardi6066 Год назад +1

      @@fcpeuro Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the M274 is in the c-class, W205 from the 2015 to 2018 models. The M264 engine is from 2019 onwards in the c-class. When you mentioned that my engine was different, you made me doubt and I investigated. Besides, it's the same engine as in the video, as far as it looks. I'm very worried because I have the exact symptoms. I live in NYC. When I took the car to Mercedes Benz for maintenance, they said everything was fine. But no, I'm sure that this engine has the exact symptoms described in this video. Only when it's cold. So I started researching more deeply and found out that several owners of this engine had problems with the piston at any mileage - 16,000, 30,000, 100,000 miles. It breaks out of nowhere without warning. I also found out that there's an ongoing lawsuit in California for this issue. I also want to think that it might be false information. But when I saw this video, my doubts are present again. Honestly, I don't know what to do. I take very good care of the car and always use the remote start before using the car to warm up the engine. Thank you for your time.

      The car continues to run perfectly, only the noise in the mornings described in this video. At 4 minutes when it's fully warmed up, it stops. It's the same description, like metals rubbing together and a slight knocking. I maintain it very well. I have all the maintenance documented, the car has only 36k miles. Everything has been changed, including the coolant and brake fluids. Everything is very well controlled. So far, the car runs like a dream. But I'm always worried about that noise. I'm already considering selling it.

    Those water pumps fail all the time too. They seize and take the belt and anything in the belt's way with it. Also, some versions use a dual stage pump that routinely fails as well. Causes the engine to run hot at speed. Routinely misdiagnosed. And unless I missed something, the turbo had to come out, as the pump lives under the turbo. That means you'll be doing all the seals and gaskets on the turbo as well.
    Egregious water pump design for sure.

    All the jrkoffs saying the 'diesel' sound is gudgeon knock are FoS. its a combo of powerful injectors and the high pressure pump, which runs at very high PSI. The pump housing is slightly oversized, and aluminium, which is why people often notice a temp dependency. In the US there are customers running m274 engines into the late 200k, some at 300k, which is 500,000km. The gudgeon pin issue was fully resolved by a redesign of the pins, which are larger dia since 2017.
    The subsequent, and fairly rare piston failures have all of them a common theme, incorrect RON fuels. Either too low for ECU knock corr, or abrupt RON changes before ECU adapts timing. Note the theme with piston that fails, oh yeah, startup stress from prem detonation. It's people running interference, purposefully or inadvertently through layman's guessing, advancing a claim the gudgeon issue continues to the present day, because ofc a gudgeon failing ruins its piston. But so do a-holes running low RON fuels in high comp motors.
    FCP are great for parts, the guys "terrible but not so terrible" is just very "imho", imho. the 274 is a nice engine and very very easy to access. Whining on about water pump access? Bro, go look at any Toyota if you want tears to flow

    Saying that Piston issues were only present on very early cars/engines is absolutely incorrect.
    There are dozens of cases with USDM and ADM models of this motor from 2017 onward with catastrophic piston failure in Piston 1 and some with multiple pistons.
    Failure mode ranges from cracked ring lands to completely cracked piston crowns.
    I can't believe MB USA hasn't been forced to recall these motors or had a class action law suit brought against them as they often fail JUST outside the factory warranty period.
    I know some owners in CA have gotten MBUSA to pay for replacement because CA makes pistons covered under the 80k mile smog equipment warranty.

      Hi, I sent a petition to the administrator of the NHTSA to investigate this piston issue as I was affected and after months and months of pushing the issue they were finally kind enough to start an investigation . If you look at the open investigations for 2015 c300s there are now three and the wrist pin / cracked piston engine failure is one of them . This started about two weeks ago, so let’s have faith in our government to make Mercedes do what is right and take responsibility for this problem. It is totally unsafe for someone to be driving on the road and have this unexpectedly happen, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt and the NHTSA has the power to force Mercedes into recalling this engine .

    My 2016 Metris has the "Low Boost" code and surges boost before going to full limp/zero boost mode. No matter whether it's 3psi, 11psi, or 18psi it will not allow for more than one second of boost before opening the wastegate. No boost leaks, smoke test is clear. Replaced turbo, intake manifold, boost solenoid, boost sensors, intake temp sensor, water pump. Showing P0420 also for cat but it has two new OEM O2 sensors. Magnaflow cat has been on order for months, wondering if for some reason it is limiting boost for that? Cat visually inspected when turbo was replaced, but only from the front site. A few other Metris guys are having this very same issue so I'm the lead dummy spending $ with the parts cannon to see what sticks to the wall. Mercedes/Sprinter dealers won't work on them anymore in my area, so we are out of luck. That’s what many people were told but if you listen to this video at 5:50 he talks about the piston slap… that’s the noise I heard when my car was sounding like a mini diesel . It wasn’t because of the high fuel pressure or anything else , it was the sound of the piston slapping the inside of the cylinder wall which would later lead to it cracking as mine did at only 51k miles. The newer models are a lot quieter btw - they fixed the wrist pin issue

    In April of last year (2021) I was driving my 2017 C300 (W205), piston 1 cylinder 1 had failure (ejected through the engine block) with 86737 KM (53,896 M) on the odometer, I was about 3,896 miles over my factory warranty. Due to my engine block being damaged (the piston went through the block and ejected onto the highway) the repair cost was going to be 12,000EURO. Mercedes Corporate refused to offer any support (good will warranty or otherwise). Mercedes has terrible customer service, I had every oil & oil filter change (at 5,000 mile intervals) performed at the dealership. My car had excellent MB dealership service records and MB still refused to help me.
    I did not owe anything on the car (thank God I paid it off) so I had to scrap it for pennies on the dollar of what I paid for it. I will NEVER drive a MB again. I have since replaced the car with a BMW 330i and I have been very blessed to not have any issues with it.
    For me it is not about the money, it is about the principle, one does not buy or lease a Mercedes Benz only to have the engine blow up with only 87,737KM on the odometer! And for the repair cost of the total engine replacement I could have just bought a new car with that (which I did). Please do not buy a C300 (W205) or any MB with the M274 engine.

      I work on these cars for a living. 20+ years now. The M274, like the M270 (transverse mounted) 4 cylinders are basically boat anchor motors developed in conjunction with Renault. These clunkers get all types of issues. One of the worst water pump designs ever (lives under the turbocharger)! Also the breather system is complete junk. Has a breather hose which breaks a lot, that requires intake manifold removal just to replace. Pays about 5 hours of labor to replace. The coolant tanks are always leaking, horrendous ignition coil/boot design. Rarely do the coil boots survive disassembly. And the fuel injectors are known to fail as well. They are pricey, and require unnecessary special tools to replace the seals in the fuel rail.
      All of that for an engine that doesn't make that much power, and isn't exactly winning any fuel economy awards either.
      V6/V8 or bust when it comes to MB.
