He isn't really that macho, just the best in combat. John was the real macho soldier type. Arthur is deeper, which is why he can tap into a rage that makes him even better in combat than John, but afterwards he falls apart.
I think that arthur is simply a broken person. The pain from his father, the pain from the war, the pain from being the oldest of the brothers and having to provide until tommy took over. There is just alot of pain in his life, can’t really blame him for the way he is.

Their biggest enemies were themselves
Yeah aurthur loved his baby brothers more than other two loved each other.....even after John's death aurthur can be seen as the one mourning most....i think tommy and john were more obsessed to themselves, while aurthur was the one who never cared for his own emotions, never spoke about what he feel,...always ready to stand as a sheild to protect his brothers

I love how this series captured a unique aspect that most of us don't think about. We know it as PTSD, but men were just expected to be men back in the day. The wars must have had such huge, long lasting effects on the mental health of the population.
This guy escaped from the trenches alive and returned to his home fighting other wars which were different and more dangerous to him and his family than the war in France. It wasn’t just ww1 that made him like that it was everything going on in his life

That was the first war of that kind. It was not just the killings. There was always some war somewhere, and there were always dead. But that massive in such proportion, not. That use of artillery...you don't even see the enemy. And so oft after an explosion, there was no body to be sent home.

Arthur is probably one of the most emotional and attachable characters in Peaky Blinders. His Animalistic features come out when he pissed but he showes he cares about the ones he loves. Cant wait to see what happens to the Boys if this new season is set in WW2.

Somehow arthur is the most human and has the biggest heart of all the Shelbys, in a twisted way. He is actively trying to improve himself but can’t. Kind of like Jesse Pinkman but a thousand times more violent
The portrayal of the PTSD madness and irrationality is so intense. The inner torment that never goes away the rage and the helplessness. I live this every day. Some days I win and some days I don't but the scars never heal.

Paul Anderson is the tiger of the show. His acting pulls out every rage I feel as I watch the series. Super underrated..One of the best actors in this series.

He is brilliant actor . His anger scenes bring chills.
To me, Arthur portrays these men who came back from the war only to find that they been broken and cast aside once they were no longer useful to their country. Nobody deserves what these men went through. They were turned into monsters and left to deal with the aftermath by themselves.
There was a time at the start when I thought Arthur could be killed off and that would be ok...then the actor was always getting better and better and now he is one If not the most interesting and well played character of the series.

Hands down, my favorite character ♡ fookin' brilliant visceral performance. I'm not one to consider awards & such relevant but Paul Anderson not receiving any accolades for his amazing portrayal of Arthur Shelby is beyond me. I mean for fook's sake..
Arthur might have been an emotional mess a lot of the time but when work needed done, he went back into soldier mode. The way he killed the two changrettas in the warehouse, the scene where him his uncle and jeremiah went full black ops mode to kill the ira generals in the last season. Focused to an absolute fine point.
