I so agree with you!! There is a super majority in Iowa and has been for a while. We have had terrible laws enacted that have ruined our education system along with everything else.
Our schools have been chronically underfunded. Book bans passed. Horribbly discriminatory LGTBQ laws passed. Teachers hands are tied in ridiculous laws that are driving teachers away or out of the profession all together. Also, many of our rural schools have closed. When rural schools close towns die!!
Our ridiculous govenor Kim Reynolds now wants to almost completely defund or elliminate and take control of our Area Education Agencies. They are responsible for making sure all special needs and disabled children, birth to age 21, get their educational needs met and advocate for them. AEA provides physical, occupational, and speech therapy, developmental testing, coordination and programming for early childhood before age 3, developmental testing in school age, teacher training and continuing ed, technology training and media for schools and teachers, and most importantly overseeing and enforcing IEP, individual education plans, which schools are legally obligated to follow to meet special needs and disabled kids education goals.
Special needs kids are being treated like second class citizens.
Our govenor had an out of state entity determine a study to help back up her desire to privatize special needs services for our kids.
This would force schools to contract these services and put rural schools against large schools for these professional services in a bidding war. Of course small schools would lose out.
She has gotten a lot of push back thankfully and has had to change some of her proposed bill but is still pushing her agenda.
This is also the first year for school vouchers. It has not gone well. Its cost has more than doubled just for the first year of vouchers with no over sight. An out of state entity controls the money as well.
Reynolds is also still pushing for 6 week abortion ban, which is caught up in the courts.
Our kids are suffering, our schools are suffering, and no young people want to live or have families in Iowa because of horrible Republucan policies. They are literally killing our state!!!

And I"m dumbstruck what has happened there: I used to be proud that Iowans were sensible, kind, intelligent people with integrity (and respected that in others) despite their party leanings. I NEVER thought they'd be Trumpies, even Republicans!! Now, my other home state, Kentucky, it's not so shocking re: being Trumpies ... I did just look up if Iowa's school ratings have declined over the years, but surprisingly, Iowa still ranks rather high! Of course, Iowa doesn't have the gap as much as other states between the Super Wealthy, and Super Poor. I sometimes think that gap is what hurts some states/cities.

Two other points that you may be raising (and thank you, thank you for pointing all this out!). When it gets down to it, what they might really want is to not pay taxes and/or is to not pay taxes that benefit any of those folks consider less than them; poor people in general, but mostly poor people who aren’t as light skin as they are. There was a really good book showing poor White men in particular won’t take advantage of Medicaid and offered because that would be shaming. They don’t want use or pay taxes to something that they perceive is for “those “ people use. Their lives are shortened because of their shame and their racism. Later.
